Training Schedule, Marathon Style : wedding fitness Running1 Running

(Source)

Hee hee, sorry, I couldn’t resist a cartoon that featured running and weddings!

Now that it’s almost February (what the CRAP?!?! How did that happen?!?!) I am deep into marathon training. In fact, I counted it up and the Boston Marathon is less than 12 weeks away! For once, I’ve actually been consistent with my training, thanks in large part to writing about it as well as logging all my miles and workouts (a strategy I talked about here).

I thought I would share with you all a typical training week. You could modify this for any-length race though; just subtract about 20% of the mileage for a shorter race (such as a half-marathon or 10k.)

Due to time constraints, I always plan my longest run for the weekend. It isn’t always a fun decision, since it usually means I have to forgo the standard Saturday night festivities in order to be hydrated and awake for my 14+ milers but I think the end results on April 19th will be worth it.

Sample Weekly Marathon Training Schedule

Monday- 60 minutes or more cross-training. I prefer a specific type of elliptical that works your arms and legs but the stationary bike, erg machine, StairMaster or swimming are all great cross-training methods as well.

Tuesday- 7-10 miles. ‘Nuff said.

Wednesday- Because I’m all about the alliterations, Wednesday has come to be “Workout Wednesdays” in my mind. I usually alternate each week between a hill workout and a speed workout. For example, this past Wednesday I ran 2 minutes uphill, then turned right around and jogged back down, making a continuous loop that took about 4:30 total time. I did that 11 times (plus a warm-up and cool down).

An example of a speed workout I did the week before is :30 at a very hard pace, then 1:00 very, very slowly x 15.

Thursday- Gotta recover from that workout, so a 4-5 miler at an easy pace feels good.

Friday- More cross-training, usually upwards of 60:00, sometimes 80:00 if I’m feeling ambitious (or trying to make up for a lazy day when I didn’t get my miles in!)

Saturday- Easy 2-3 miles in preparation for the next day… I also sometimes just go for a walk or do nothing on this day. I’ve found that I get really good results the more I rest. It sounds contradictory but sometimes rest can be the best ingredient in a training recipe.

Sunday- Longest run of the week. When I started training for the marathon, my long run was 8 miles and I’ve added 1 mile to this long run every week since. I’m now at 14 miles and have to work up to between 20-21 miles. Ouch.

So that’s my general outline for my marathon training. Do I stick to it like a drill sergeant? Nope, not a chance. There are days where I’m too tired, too busy or too sick of working out to do much more than a 30:00 run (or even anything at all). I don’t stress it. Just like wedding planning, half the battle of running a marathon is the journey there and I try to enjoy it as much as possible.

The good thing about this general workout plan is that it could easily be adapted for whatever distance race you are training for. If it’s a 5k you’re running, run 3 miles instead of 7 and do 40:00 on the elliptical instead of 60:00.

Well, I hope I haven’t scared you all off from running or training for a race. It sounds like a lot and sometimes it is but I think the results will be well worth the effort.

Is anyone else training for a spring race? What race are you running? I’d love to hear about it!

Awesome post! I just ran my first marathon (NYC) last fall, and it was an amazing experience. Kudos on doing this while planning your wedding - I found it tough to balance my training regimin with my wedding chores!

In my training, I found that I needed more rest than it looks like you give yourself - I typically had at least one day of no activity at all (usually the day after my long run), along with one day for yoga or some other non-cardio activity that allowed me to stretch. I also was a first-time marathoner though, so my body was definitely adjusting to the long miles.

Thanks for the inspiration! My wedding is in May and my fiance and I have both signed up to do a 1/2 marathon 3 weeks before the big day. I’m looking forward to having goals to work up to. And its such a great and fun way to get in shape for the wedding. I might try out your schedule, it sounds great!

I’m training for my 3rd half marathon. My training schedule is much more lax! I have 3 scheduled runs per week - one short (3-5 miles) one long (buildup, similar to marathon), and one speed workout. Then I do two days of cross-training/strength training and two days of rest. I’m by no means fast, but I can finish the race!

I’m kinda jealous. I did my first half marathon last November, and I’m supposed to do another one in March, but I’ve given up. I started training and it just wasn’t any fun to me this time. I’m focusing more of my attention on fun runs (3-4 miles) per day plus training for rock climbing. I’m hoping that once the weather warms up a bit I’ll get more excited about getting some longer runs in.

Thanks for writing about this! I’ve not previously been a runner, but I’m training for a May race in Virginia (I still haven’t decided if I’m brave enough to do the full marathon, or if I’ll stick to the half). I’ll be running the National Half Marathon in DC in March as a training run, so if that goes well I’ll do the full marathon in May :) I can’t believe you work out every day of the week! My schedule is only 4 runs a week and one cross training day. So far its been going really well. It’s always great to hear from other people for inspiration.

Keep us posted on your progress! What is your target marathon time?

You are inspiring! Your post is timely for me–I have never worked up to more than a mile of jogging in the past, but really would like to start in again. I’d like to shoot for a 5k. I am not sure how to start; I remember seeing links on Weddingbee to some great Web site about how to start slow and really do it right. I have searched for that but cannot find it now–unless it was Couch to 5K?, which I’m not sure was it. Whatever site it was, I really liked the looks of it. Trail Mix, do you have advice on that? I am no spring chicken any more ;) and also have a crazy work schedule, so I need something gradual and well-thought-out without a huge commitment of time. I know; I want it all! Good luck with your marathon (and any advice is appreciated)!

I have a chart that shows the 13 week program. It’s 13 weeks of training that should prepare you for a 10k. I can’t find a link to it online.
I wanted to do my first marathon this April, but I’m being confirmed the day of the race. So, I’ll have to find another.
I have just recently (in the last year or so) taken up running. I’m not fast, but I go at a good steady pace and I’m building endurance daily. I also love the elliptical and do a solid 40 minutes at a steep incline 4 times/week.

This is a great post! I *used* to have time for running, but lately I’ve been slacking off and using the weather as an excuse. (In my defense, it’s 1 degree out right now.)

I am training for Boston too! I have to do 16 miles on Saturday. This is going to be my second year running Boston. I’d love to requalify again this year — and by a more substantial margin. I barely broke 3:40 last year!

Do you have any specific goals for the race?

I’m training for the 13.1 series half marathon in New York City in April. However, I’m also trying to get in my 9 races this year to qualify for the NYC marathon in 2011! Next one is 4 miles on Super Bowl Sunday.

I can’t imagine doing a marathon! I am training for an 8k right now (only 5 miles, but it seems far to me!) and eventually I would like to do a half marathon. I looked into doing one this spring but decided it was just too much. There is one where I live in August so maybe then!

I have friends and family members that have run marathons before and it seriously takes so much dedication and training! Congratulations on making it work alongside wedding planning!
