Wedding on the Web

January 29th, 2010 @ 3:40 pm by Mrs. Ribbons

So, I just sort of finished our wedding website.

Wedding on the Web : wedding wedding website Website01 website01

I rushed to finish this so I could put the address on our save the dates. It’s pretty bare bones, but it has the necessary information at least!

At first I intended to use a template from one of the wedding sites, but none matched our colors or feel. Every pink template had brown as an accent and I just didn’t want to go there. As a fake communications professional, the first rule of branding is consistency. So I needed to find something with more customization but no html. I do not code.

Oh Google, thank you.

Google Sites is absolutely all I needed. I chose a simple template, changed the background to a stripe image I created in Illustrator, and added our “logo” to the header. Then, like magic, it lets you edit pages as you see them, typing directly on the site. It’s lovely. When you want to add your “accommodations” page, you simply click “Add Page” at the top, and voila, you get to start a new page. Demon magic, for sure.

But you can’t stop there. You need a domain name. I can never remember long or confusing sites, so my guests definitely wouldn’t. Instead I purchased a short and sweet domain from godaddy.com. Yeah, I feel guilty encouraging their stupid Super Bowl commercials. But we get the name for a year at the low, low price of $7.50.

But wait, there’s more! What am I doing with that domain name, for instance? Well, I’m forwarding it to our Google site page. And, in addition to forwarding, I’m “masking” the site, so it always shows our Godaddy domain instead of the craptastic Google one.

Are you making a wedding website? How did you decide to make it?

I was looking to get a domain on GoDaddy, they had great prices, but their webhosting was like $70/yr, so I didn’t do it. What are you hosting your site through?

@Miss Rainbow: Google Sites is the host. You could use one of the wedding webpage hosts and forward the address there.

If you don’t want to use GoDaddy (yea, their commercials leave a bad taste in the mouth), we used http://www.NameCheap.com.

Yay for non-wedding wedding sites!

I did the same except I’m using Yola.com to host and got my domain name on a super sale for $2!!! Hehe.
And I agree, most wedding website creates were too girly for my taste.

We made our site using a Wordpress blog template. Then we just bought our domain name through them. It’s still hosted on the free blog server, so it was only $15!

I’m doing the same thing but using Weebly. I just didn’t think the pre-made templates allowed much creativity. I need to find someone to help me jazz up the the background and the fonts though- I am HTML illiterate!

I did my sisters website last night. After days of looking for the perfect black/white damask with apple green (it does not exist) and with all the editable features I chose momentville.com and did the upgrade of $35. I bought a domain .info from godaddy for $1.08. Then I then did a forward and you type in the purchased domain and momentville is the host. I decided to go this way because we were still shopping for what wedding site to use and the invites HAD TO GO OUT! Momentville.com had the largest photos available and they have this cool slide to size them as large as you want when working on your pages. :) I also love you can add widgets (you tube or rock you photoshows to your wedding blog - some were too structured on what you can do. I do know HTML - but did not really have to use it - I may go back in and play with some fancy fonts - but overall I love it.

nice! i’m glad you found something that worked for you–you have such a strong sense of style, so i can imagine that it was important to be able to get what you wanted. for me, i just haphazardly chose something and slapped it up there. are you disappointed in me?

I set our site up through mywedding.com. I also bought a domain name through godaddy. I have it forwarded, but how do I mask?

can you share what type of domain you registered for with them and how you got it for so cheap? I looked at getting one and it quoted me $10.69. I don’t know if that included masking or forwarding? Any advice?

@10.10.10

Log in, click your domain name, click forwarding, click advanced options, put in the title you want on the very top bar of the page and then click ok.

Voila! I so just wrote a blog on this, too!

For me … on godaddy’s site - I just did a domain search with the grooms name first then “and” then the bride and the other way around - it give you several options .info (what I got) .com .me….. I just chose the cheapest one. :)

We did the DIY website option too… but luckily I code, and my fiance (sort of) understands DreamWeaver. My fiance also already pays for a domain name, so we just set up our wedding website there. The site looks great now, but it took us several weeks of non-stop work to get it all designed the way we wanted it. Your option sounds much easier and less stressful!

Our travel agent set up a website for us. It’s pretty basic but it had all the info for our guests so it did it’s job. I’m happy you found one that was so easy and inexpensive!

I had the same problem - I just couldn’t find any of the pre-made ones that fit my vision. Luckily, Mr. pudding is a computer engineer and programs for a living :P

@Andrea: I registered for a .com. I can’t remember if there was a promotion going on or what, but we also only registered for 1 year.
@chexmixDC: Using a blog is pretty clever.
@Miss Pencils: I’m sure your site is really cute!
@Miss Pug: No, it sounds like you saved yourself some time :)
