About Mrs. Buttons

If you haven’t been following along on my dress buying experience and you need to catch up…

Part 1: My inspiration, Part 2: I went shopping, and Part 3: I made up my mind

My Feelings on “the Dress:” That Loving Feeling... : wedding wedding dress Shop Bridal Gowns shop_bridal_gowns

So, you are aware at this point that I selected my wedding gown. What you may or may not have noticed was how I failed to describe my overwhelming feelings of joy and excitement at finding “THE dress”.

Oh… wait… that’s because I DIDN’T have those feelings.

I find it very interesting when I read over and over how girls find their dress and immediately know that they were meant to be together. And, it isn’t that I’m unhappy with my dress. Quite the contrary! I know that it is absolutely perfect for me; it will make me look spectacular on my wedding day, no doubt in my mind. But, where were the butterflies? The excited squeals? The tears? There was nothing… not even a titter. Overall, during my shopping experience, I never became excitable. My mother and I discussed the options at length, we tore apart the different features of the dresses that we had looked at, and I came to a decision in the end.

So, I wonder… what would it take for me to achieve that giddy, I’m going to jump up and down in glee feeling? Well, if I had to guess, it would probably appear if I were to don a gown WAY out of my price range. I pay attention to fashion, I love designers… it would be unreal to wear a Monique Lhuillier or a Vera Wang… a girl can dream! But hey, that is all it is… a dream. And I have reality to focus on.

And, you know what? Just because I didn’t have the feeling during the dress shopping experience, DOESN’T mean that I won’t get it later on. Just you wait, I’m going to turn into a blubbery wreck when I am completely put together… the hair, the makeup, the shoes… that’ll push me over the edge in the end. I’m just… on hold for the moment being.

I know I am not the first bride who has experienced this, and I certainly won’t be the last one. If you are worried about this happening to you as well, here is my piece of advice: don’t let it frustrate you. Everyone’s shopping experience is different, and just because you aren’t jumping around the dressing room, screaming at the top of your lungs, or turning into a puddle of happy tears over your dress does NOT mean that you will look any less spectacular on your wedding day. Of this I am certain.

Did YOU get that feeling when you found your dress???

No, I didn’t! I love my dress, but I didn’t have that “falling in love” moment. So, I totally understand where you’re coming from. And, I think it’s okay!

Not totally. I was excited and pumped that I found it, and I do love it, but I only got the “oh my gosh” feeling when I realized I was one step closer to the actual wedding. I know how you feel.

Nope, I didn’t get that either. It was more like, “huh. This looks good on me and everyone else is crying. I guess this is the one.”

Nope! And you’re absolutely right - when you put your dress on the day of your wedding, you will get that feeling :)

I didn’t fall in love with it….how could I fall in love with that when I’m so in love with the Mr. The only thing I said was “wow I finally feel like a bride” and that was it. The other dresses were just dresses…as if I was playing dress-up.

Same here. I know the dress is fabulous but I have yet to shed a single tear over it or get butterflies and, like you Miss Buttons, I don’t think I will until I’m all put together, with flowers in my hand and my dad on my arm.

I totally didn’t expect to at all but I did! I had tried on about 15 dresses over the course of a month at 3 different stores but when I put mine on, I had a flash of myself walking down the aisle and I started to cry…It was game over :)

No, I didn’t! But every time I put on my dress I breath a sigh of relief that I really do look as good as I thought I did in it and I know that FH will love me in it and I’ll probably get all emotional at the ceremony ;)

Yep…I’m really going to be waiting for “the moment” on the day of the wedding! I hope all of you ladies get it too!

Ha! So great to read this from someone else. I also love fashion but as a result it takes a lot to wow me. I tried on a grand total of 4 dresses (after looking at literally HUNDREDS online and narrowing the silhouettes down) - the “princess” dress (to laugh), the “out there” dress (for curiousity), an ultra-sexy fitted one (more flattering than I gave it credit for) and the one I’d come to try on in the first place (the one). I didn’t cry, didn’t have the “oh wow!” moment, though everyone in the bridal shop did.

I did just get my veil in the mail though, and did have a moment when I tried it on for length/fit - go figure!

I didn’t have that moment. However I did keep on coming back to the same dress. My cousin who went dress shopping with me, explained to me that maybe that instant this is my dress feeling doesn’t happen to everyone. That because I kept on coming back to the same dress, that it was the dress I should get. So, I did and I’m very happy with my choice.

Hey, I was not also that ecstatic when looking for my bridal gown at first. Even when I was fitting the dress, although it was a beautiful dress, I still find myself not that totally ecstatic. But when the wedding came, I was still amaze since I knew I picked the right dress and felt happy about it.

I definitely haven’t cried, gotten butterflies, etc.
I’ve been to 7 different salons, tried on probably 80 or so dresses and have narrowed it down to two. The last time I went shopping I drove home feeling really dejected, like there was something wrong with me because I wasn’t having “the moment” I love the two dresses, even though they are completely different, and am sure I’ll look beautiful in either one. I’m just kinda tired of the whole process and just want to pick something at this point. I’m a total sap though, so I’m sure once I have everything put together on the day, and I see my dad for the first time I’ll be a blubbering mess.

I didn’t get that “this is the dress” feeling right away but even now seeing so many beautiful dresses here and everywhere else, I don’t at all regret my dress and that’s what makes me know it was “the dress”.

Nope. I actually walked away from the dress the first time.
We went to a dress shop that was absolutely lovely - the store was pretty, the ladies were extremely helpful and very kind to us. But a lot of their samples were in really bad shape. When I tried on the dress, the zipper was broken and they had to clamp me in. I loved the dress, but just wasn’t convinced I should buy it, so I left the store empty handed. (Also didn’t help that my parents were holding back their reactions so they didn’t pressure me into one dress or another. They meant well, haha!) But, at the next store I went to a few months later, I asked to try it on again along with a few others. It was already hanging in the change room and I went, “Oh, that’s a beautiful dress!” and the lady helping me laughed and said, “That’s your Madeira!” My mom had the same reaction as me when she saw it - she didn’t recognize it either! It was one of those things, we just kept coming back to it. And it was a lot easier to love when I could see it without the industrial-sized clamps in the back!

I didn’t have that feeling, the dress I was so convinced was going to be The One ended up not looking right on me at all. I ended up going with my second choice. My moment was less “OMGIfoundmydressthisisthemostprfoundexperienceiwillhaveshortoftheactualwedding!” and more “yup, this is the best of the bunch.”

I didn’t cry/squeal/etc, but I knew it was the dress. I was more excited that I found “the one” and it was a ridiculous price. :)

This post makes me feel a lot better! I didn’t have that omg-melt-in-a-puddle moment either, but my mom, sister and future mother-in-law all had tears in their eyes, it was the dress I kept coming back to, AND the sales lady informed me that it was 20% off - sold! Its also strange that you see a dress for 30 minutes, fall in love, buy it, don’t see it again for 6 months… hard to keep that kind of romance going!

@LisaM: I’m so glad you ended up feeling that way!

@LittleLynx: Aw how cool!!!!

@elfe515: SO true! And, when they offer the discount…it is also hard to resist!

@Mrs. Sprinkle: Relief! But you looked absolutely stunning in your dress, so it definitely all works out in the end! YAY!
