Where to Put Thy Sparkles?

January 31st, 2010 @ 3:10 pm by Mrs. Hot Wings

Since getting engaged over 12 months ago, I have yet to figure out what is the proper protocol for thy e-ring care and storage. Other bees have bought ring holders. You can read about that here, here, here, and here, to name a few.

Do you ever take off your engagement ring? I felt bad for not taking it off when I would wash dishes, shower, or go to bed. So I take it off and put it in its case when I shower or go to bed.

I have decided that when I’m not at home with my little ring box, I wear the ring to bed because I’m prone to losing things.

Is there a right way to do this? Is there a wear and tear kind of reason for wearing your ring all the time or taking it off? What is everyone else doing?

I always wear mine. I just don’t feel right without it on. I also tend to lose things… My mom wears hers all the time (through everything!) and the only thing she has had replaced once was a prong.

My mom’s advice has always been to NEVER take it off, even if you have a special place to put it, because every time you take it off you increase your chances of misplacing it. You can always get the ring re-polished/finished. The only time I’ve taken mine off has been to swim in the ocean. Although it’s important that my ring is tight enough that I’m never worried about it randomly falling off (in the shower, washing dishes, etc.).

I take mine off when I go to bed, but only because I have the kind of body that swells at night because I get dehydrated. My ring fits perfectly during the day and so swelled fingers=OUCH if my ring is on. But I leave it on to shower, do dishes, etc.

I wear mine constantly, taking it off only to apply lotion after a shower.

I take it off to shower, do dishes and sleep but I’ll keep it on to wash my hands (I know, inconsistant much?). I have a little box which it sits in with FH’s watch and that works out great for us.
I guess I’ve read so much about rings snagging on pillows and such during your sleep or the thought of it snagging a fork worries me. Although I have a bezel setting so I guess sleeping with it on wouldn’t be too much of a problem.

I only take mine off when I put on lotion so it doesn’t get into the little cracks and nooks and crannies. But otherwise I keep it on! I love that the FI got me a solitaire + platinum so I don’t have to worry about little stones falling out or whatever. It’s got scratches and stuff, but it’s just part of life!

I take it off when I go the gym and when I go to the beach or pool.

I take my e-ring off a lot! It’s got a peridot stone, which is a soft gem, so I try to be extra careful with it. I keep it in a jewelery pouch that also holds my other daily jewelery (watch, etc). I take it off to swim, shower, sleep, go to the gym, etc. I keep my wedding band on most of the time though (only take it off to swim)

I don’t think there is a right or wrong way to do this! Just right for you! I wear my wedding band all the time (unless I’m elbow deep in motor oil or something!) , but i hate to say i don’t wear my E-ring as much as I’d like to. I’ve heard too many horror stories of girls popping out stones at work. So DH bought an antique spelter box that sits bedside holding my pretty!

I never take mine off for fear of: a. losing it, b. forgetting it, or c. my dog eating it.

I never take mine off.
When we got engaged I was talking to his mom and a family friend. They are both in their 60’s and married over 30 years. Both said they never take it off and never have lost it. The freind since her son takes it off and he is currently on his 3rd ring
I don’t want to bang it up but at some point I realized that I plan to wear this for the next 50 years…it’s going to get a little banged up :-)

I take mine off to do dishes, shower, and wash my hands–I have lost jewelry down the drain before! I also remove it before putting on hand lotion, because my jeweler told me that would cut down on how often I have to get it cleaned.

I always always wear mine! I lose things like it’s going out of style… we just made sure to insure/warranty all of it. If a stone pops out (gasp!), it will be replaced no hassle for the rest of my life. Our jewelers are awesome!

When I was newly engaged FH wanted me to take it off when I slept/did dishes/showered/anytime it might get hurt. He spent a lot of money on it so I did as he asked. Eventually I got used to wearing it all the time so it doesn’t bother me when I sleep and now I wear it while I sleep.

I do take it off to shower because I don’t want it to slip off and go down the drain and I take it off to put on lotion so it won’t get dirty. I will probably take it off to swim/lay in the sun too once summer gets here.

Oh, I forgot, when I do take it off I put it on a ring holder that is an elephant with a long tail. If I am not at home then I put it in my purse or on the night stand.

I only take mine off when I am cleaning, since my hands tend to swell. Otherwise, I like always wearing it!

i think i wear my ring less than 50% of my waking hours. i take it off when i get home, and very often i forget to put it on in the morning. i don’t think there’s a right or wrong way–do whatever is right for you! i actually have a few posts coming up about this.

I take mine off for sleeping, showering, doing dishes, going to the gym… It has more to do with my comfort level than worrying about damaging the ring. (Your ring is insured, right?) I have a little china bowl on my dresser and that’s where it goes when it is not on hand. Someone also gave me this gorgeous ring holder for my engagement. http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=182843&CategoryID=40313

I only take mine off if I am cooking something messy (meatloaf, dough) and when I go to bed (because I may scratch FI or the pets). That’s it. = )
