So the very in thing to do when you’re planning a wedding is to create a mood board. This is very unfair: with the amount of gorgeous images lurking on wedding blogs, I become pretty paralyzed when it comes to choosing a… mood.
I know the primary color will be pink. I know it’s going to be girly. But beyond that I really struggled to make any real decision. So this was my first try:
Clockwise from top left: 1, 2, 3, 4
I liked the colors, but it felt pretty vague. Then I stumbled on a board from The Bride’s Guide.

So you want to make an animated gif? Well look no further! For this tutorial, all you need is…
Now I know that there are tons of other programs out there to make animated gifs, and if you do a Google search for “free animated gif creator” or something like that, you can find some free programs to do it. This is just a tutorial for le Photoshop, because, well, that’s what I used! You can download a trial of Photoshop CS4 for free. It lasts for 30 days.

I love babies - a lot. I love pictures of babies almost as much as the real deal. I also love when people do slide shows of their baby pictures at weddings - something about it makes me all mushy and happy-like.
For us, I wanted all the ’baby’ but none of the ’slide show’. I knew we didn’t have the space or time to run a slide show on a screen, and I didn’t want to leave one of our laptops unattended for any period of time (they’re sort of essential to our everyday lives). So, I started looking for alternative ideas.
That’s when I came across an amazing picture (that I cannot find for the life of me, though I feel like it was from MSW or Modern Bride - if any of you know what I’m talking about after hearing this, let me know!). It was basically a wedding cake/dessert table in front of an entire wall of matted black and white pictures of places and people. When I saw it, I knew I had found my slide show alternative.
I wanted to play on the idea of a picture collage “wall”, but I wanted there to be a little more movement and flexibility, which is when I came up with the idea of doing picture mobiles.
First, we had to select pictures.

Mr. Pencils and I have done our fair share of wandering across the globe. Our relationship has most certainly been defined by these travels together, and when we sat down to plan our wedding, we knew we wanted these to play a part.

Before my junior year in college, I had never left the United States. Mr. P, however, had backpacked through Europe the summer after high school. Once I lived in Rome for five months, I knew I wanted to see more! Mr. Pencils studied in Beijing during that time, and he had such an amazing experience, I knew someday I wanted to go to China myself. So, our senior year of college, we planned a four week trek from Beijing to Paris, with Moscow, Munich, Hungary, Interlaken, Vienna, and Prague in between. We even went paragliding in Interlaken!

We’re thrilled to introduce our very first AWESOME (hee hee) pattern bee! Please join me in welcoming our first fall 2010 bee to the hive!

Miss Stripes, Los Angeles
Age & Occupation: 29, Costume Designer/Stylist
Fiancee’s Age & Occupation: 29, Chef
Engagement Date: June 23, 2009
Wedding Date: September 2010

About Me: I’m a type A creative with a messy streak, a loud mouth, and an uncanny knack for combining clashing patterns. I can usually be found with my nose in a book, my feet (or at least my toes) on the ground, my head in the clouds, and my arm around the prettiest girl you ever saw- aka
Fiancee Stripes. Together we’re planning a FUN vintage/modern French carnival wedding extravaganza and rockin’ dance party on a dime. (Say that three times fast!) Good coffee, long lists, Uniball pens, and my iPhone keep me sane, and making art, making trouble, and making out keep me happy! I love urban adventures, bike rides that end with afternoon drinks, breakfast for dinner, beautiful light, photography, travel, my furry family, and of course, my beautiful fiancee! I’m super excited to be here and can’t wait to share all our adventures as we craft a joyful, budget-friendly, design-savvy and all-around AWESOME wedding!
To say that nothing went “wrong” at our wedding would be an understatement.
We ran out of appetizers 15 minutes into our cocktail hour. Storm clouds swelled throughout the day forcing our ceremony from an expansive meadow into a cozy barn. The photo booth backdrop didn’t end up being quite enough fabric to encompass a large group of guests. Our band played for longer than planned (score!) but that meant we had to skip our end-of-the-night dance party playlist which I’d been looking forward to. The bluegrass songs I picked for our band breaks brought the dancing to a halt every time the band took a break; I could never figure out which songs would keep the energy high between live sets. You can’t go from fiddle and washboard to Jay-Z, right?
But calling everything above a “wedding failure” depends on your perspective and mindset. According to me? Nothing went wrong at our wedding. And that’s because I didn’t have a strong definition of the word “right”. Here’s a teaser of our wedding video, made by my brother, to give you an idea of how it all played out (note: you can make it full-screen):
I knew that our wedding was going to be what it was going to be no matter what.

I’ve been on an Etsy spree (I know, shocking isn’t it?)… searching for some homemade lovelies from the vendors.
One small detail about my wedding attire that I had forgotten about until now: garters! I’m going to take an eternity to select one of these lacy/feathery numbers to wear underneath my dress…commence drooling… NOW!
Remember that girl who started blogging here about a month before her family tree-themed, DIY project-filled wedding… oh, some seven months ago? Then she all but disappeared without even sharing a bit about the most wonderful day of her life? Yeah, that would be me. This Yorkie’s been a bad dog.
I never would have imagined that our first few months of married life would continue at about the same rapid pace as the ones leading up to our wedding. Immediately after returning from our amazing honeymoon in Scotland, I began training for my fifth marathon (which I’ll run in just a couple of weeks!). Catching up at work and with life in general took longer than I’d anticipated.
Then Mr. Y and I did so well budgeting and saving up for the wedding that we decided to extend the plan to work toward our next major purchase…
Like many couples, Mr. Sewing and I have “our song”. We’ll have to decide whether we want to include it in our wedding, right? Well, here it is in all it’s bum-shaking glory:
We’re both big Franz Ferdinand fans, and we even got to see them in concert last March (and would see them again ANY day, they were great!). Of course we had heard the ever-famous “Take me Out” song from the iPod commercials, but it was the Paradise Kiss ending trailer that really got us hooked.

Ribs and I met in May at the end of my third year of undergrad. It was going into the summer term and I had been accepted as an opinion columnist on the college paper. He was the opinion editor. Scandalous!
After some gchat flirtations, we started dating. We weren’t attached at the hip that summer because he was finishing courses to graduate, but it was just sort of lovely being with someone that was on the same level as me. I had come out of a relationship with someone who had major commitment problems, so it was nice to learn from that and be a better person for Ribs.
We last left off with my pre-dress-shopping neuroses, I was convinced that the world was going to end, planets were going to crush me, and all that jazz.
We had two appointments scheduled for the first day of dress shopping, and I was prepared. I had on no makeup, as not to get any on the dresses, as well as my proper undergarments, so that I didn’t flash the whole world.
As a quick sidebar, I’d like to HIGHLY recommend wearing the undergarments I wore for dress shopping– the Spanx Hide & Sleek Hi-Rise Panty (or any other Spanx!), as well as a nude strapless bra. This way, while the attendant is stripping you drown and putting you into dress after dress, it just feels like you’re wearing a conservative swimsuit. Win!
Anyway, back to the story!

Last weekend, Burger and I, along with my parents, met in State College for our last big push before W-day. We met with most of our vendors, and finalized a lot of things. It was crazy busy, exhausting, but also fun and exciting. Ready for a crazy recap of the weekend events? Hold on, here we go!
On Friday night, Burger and I met with our DJ to go over our song choices and playlists. This meeting was quick, chill, and really productive. We ended up switching around the order of some things, but everything we chose was alright with him, so it went very smoothly!
On Saturday morning, I had my hair and makeup trial. It took 3 hours, so we were running late for our other meetings, and I totally forgot to take pictures! I’m sorry.
But basically, it went like this: I brought pictures of brides with big, loose pretty curls (specifically, this gorgeous chick featured on ritzybee), the hairdresser proceeded to use a half inch barrel curling iron on my entire head, and then pull the curls apart, which resulted in me looking like a 4 year old version of myself, dressed up like a lion.
Seriously, I wish I had taken pictures at that stage. At the time, I was kind of (really) upset. But, once I explained that I thought we needed a (MUCH) bigger barrel iron, she was on board (she did, of course, explain that she had only used the smaller one because she thought my hair would fall and eventually look like the picture… she didn’t know how well my hair holds curl), and we got the look correct. Really, my hair is only going to look slightly different from how I normally wear it, but I’m OK with that. ![]()

So, I’m a fail blogger and totally exposed “the moment” without setting you all up with all the back story! So, without further ado, I present, “setting the scene,” a prequel to “the moment”….
~~~
Gosh, it’s a beautiful night… That was the phrase that should have alerted me to the dramatic moment (cue music!) that was about to take place. As it was, I was oblivious—though not for lack of bugging Mr. Pencils for weeks and weeks about when this moment would take place. Which moment? Why, this moment of course:
personal photo
It all started during our cross-country road trip in the summer of 2008. Mr. Pencils and I had taken to the roads with his cousin, called Sally.
