Mrs. Rainbow, TampaAge and Occupation: 22, Makeup ArtistFiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Electrical Engineer/ProgrammerEngagement Date: November 27, 2008Wedding Date: May 2010Venue: The Gamble PlantationAbout Me: I'm a quirky (and slightly Type-A) freelance makeup artist who was born in Washington State, raised in Alabama, and now living with my one and only in sunny Florida. I'm fashion and beauty obsessed, and have recently discovered my inner domestic diva extraordinaire. I'm a wannabe chef, decorating addict, and trying desperately to be as crafty as possible---albeit only with a glue gun. I'm hopelessly in love with my fiance, and all things sparkly and feathery. Despite the glittery exterior, I'm a total hippie on the inside. When I'm not making up pretty faces, I love doing what I can to help people, animals, and the environment. Someday the FI and I will change the world, but first we're tackling our modern-vintage-Marie-Antoinette-meets-Alice-in-Wonderland inspired wedding. I just can't wait to be Mrs. Rainbow!
Please don’t call 911, it isn’t what it sounds like! Although Mr. Rainbow and I do like to lay the (play) smack down on each other from time to time, I don’t think either of us has actually been punched in the mouth, fortunately. Bumps, bruises, and the occasional bite mark, sure, but no busted lips. No, this post is about our punch bar that I mentioned here, waaay back when.
Mrs. Sewing, San Mateo, CA/Honolulu, HIAge and Occupation: 24, Electrical EngineerFiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Electrical EngineerEngagement Date: June 27, 2009Wedding Date: July 2010Venue: Anela Garden Chapel & Japanese Cultural Center, HonoluluAbout Me: I'm an easily entertained, compulsive idea-scheming machine who loves good art, good food, and a good engineering challenge. I'm planning a half-destination wedding on the beautiful island of Oahu - imagine a plethora of movies, art and games; savory Hawaiian food; blended Chinese and Japanese cultural details; lush, fragrant tropical flowers and all the air conditioning a NorCal native could want! And once I marry the love of my life, we'll come back to the 'mainland' to party it up all over again in my hometown of Salinas, the salad-bowl capital of the world!
Whenever I get confused and my brain feels like a pinball machine on hyper-drive, I turn to old faithful to bring me back in line: the list. There’s lists for groceries, chores, things to do at work, restaurants to try, Christmas presents to buy, even topics to blog about.
“Before you go buying things and spending frivolously, did you come up with a theme yet?” Asks Mr. Sewing, as I peruse a clearance section at Michaels with interest.
“Hmm. I dunno. Get me a pen and a paper, we’ll brainstorm a list of ideas!” I answer, now clutching a completely useless (but adorably cute) pack of pewter charms.
Mr. Sewing groans audibly. “You don’t even know what you’re going to do with those, put them down.” Ever the practical man, he doesn’t believe in buying things without having a firm scope in place for the items use. “Half off of a ten dollar item is five dollars wasted” is his mantra.
Since I couldn’t rack my brain fast enough to come up with a feasible idea, I put the charms away. We went home and I busted out a list of criteria for our wedding. With this in mind, maybe I wouldn’t be like the hungry person that decides to go grocery shopping and ends up buying way more than expected. Read more…
Mrs. Pencils, Washington DC/Frederick, MDAge and Occupation: 24, Program Director, Education Non ProfitFiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Administrative Assistant, Ocean Conservation Non ProfitEngagement Date: July 26, 2008Wedding Date: May 2010Venue: Morningside InnAbout Me: I'm a nerdy Northwestern girl who always knew she was meant to live in the East, harboring a deep love of ice cream, underwear, Diet Coke with a splash of Coca-Cola, pashminas, scrapbooking, stationery, wall calendars and books written for preteens. I think every day should include good thin crust pizza, chocolate, an obscure historical monument, lots of laughter, a dash of wedding planning and, of course, amazing Mr. Pencils! I'm loving the adventure of planning a Maryland wedding and Rocky Mountain reception, and most of all, I just love love!
Early on in the wedding planning, Mr. Pencils told me he wanted to be “involved”. Involved in the planning, the decisions, the excitement. We’ve always had the partner mentality—we are equals in our relationship. We often refer to each other as “co-pilots” and we take pride in the fact that neither one of us has an “upper hand” in the relationship (wow, that was a lot of theoretical quotations).
But this could go two ways—we could get along great over the course of our 21 month engagement, making decisions as joint partners, with equal input… or, the complete opposite. I didn’t anticipate it would go the second way, but I have heard horror stories of bridezillas gone awry… and I didn’t want to become that! So I quickly agreed that our wedding and all of its planning glory would be a hand in hand adventure for us.
In reality, this was a good thing, as I am notorious for being bad at making decisions. Read more…
Mrs. Buttons, Clearwater, FLAge and Occupation: 24, "Working on it"Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Financial ServicesEngagement Date: June 13, 2009Wedding Date: May 2010Venue: Carlouel Yacht ClubAbout Me: I'm a self proclaimed perfectionist and a professional nomad (seriously, I've lived in TX, WI, MI, FL, NC, and now VA!). I love wine, cooking, curling up with a good book (nerd alert!), spoiling the furbaby, and of course, the wonderful Mr. Buttons! We are planning a lighthearted and whimsical wedding (with a good deal of DIY projects) in Clearwater, Florida, but from a distance of 800 miles away! We are looking forward to sharing our day with our family and friends, and most importantly, starting our lives together as husband and wife!
OK, so perhaps this isn’t icing… but it does involve cake!
As much as I love the traditional little figurines that adorn the top of the wedding cake, I was looking for something a little different…
My obsession? Cute and adorable bird cake toppers! I scoured Etsy for some options… and I couldn’t decide!!! Here are some of my original inspirations…
Mrs. Scissors, LaGrange, GAAge and Occupation: 25, Photography & Graphic DesignFiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Engineering Grad StudentEngagement Date: January 1, 2009Wedding Date: June 2010Venue: Ceremony - First United Methodist Church; Reception - My parents' house!About Me: I’m a six-foot-three bride with a fifty-foot personality! I love great art, fabulous design, intense color, tons of music, indie photography, watching movies on repeat, and being really awesome. This super-tall, Southern, loud, quirky, neurotic artist is marrying a German, quiet, silly, super-amazing roboticist in an eclectic, funky, fun, snazzy, technicolored June wedding. Anything is game for this shindig, for it is all about us! We’re bringing giant paper cranes, six-foot-tall portraits, fortune cookies, a photo booth, a club-circuit DJ, handcuffs, and possibly a kidnapping to this small Southern town. Watch out, y’all, and try to keep up!
I’ve been on the hunt for fantastic wedding shoes since we got engaged, and early on I decided that I wanted some balla’ shoes to wear on the wedding day. For wedding shoes, Loub has topped my list because of the fabulous red sole, and, well, the fabulous shoes attached to them!
A few months ago, I spotted the Loub “love flats”. I thought that they were perfect wedding shoes for me! Flat, kitschy, and fantastic. Read more…
Mrs. Pug, New York City/Half Moon Bay, CAAge and Occupation: 33, LawyerFiance's Age and Occupation: 32, dittoEngagement Date: July 2008Wedding Date: March 2010Venue: Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon BayAbout Me: The Mr. and I are two 30-somethings who enjoy tasty sweets of all kinds, our neighborhood wine store, and cuddling with our pug. NYC is where we live and the city we love, but we’re doing the deed out in Northern California. We are trying to keep the affair small, intimate, and manageable. Our motto is: the less people, the better! (I’m kidding.)
Last time I left you with a sad, sorry picture of what was me during the search for an invite motif. I sat in front of the computer for hours, typing in search after search in Google Images. Mr. Pug went to bed. Even the pug went to bed. It was just me, the umpteenth showing of a Cake Boss episode, and the internet. And finally, I found it… an artichoke!
It was perfect. The most perfect artichoke. Okay, I know what you’re thinking (an artichoke? OK DORK), but just look at the artichoke:

Mrs. Glitter, Los AngelesAge and Occupation: 27, Research Consultant/WriterFiance's Age and Occupation: 29, AccountingEngagement Date: May 6, 2007Wedding Date: June, 2009Venue: Millenium Biltmore HotelAbout Me: I was born and raised in West Los Angeles, California. I spent eight years in the Northeast working and completing my education. Having split time between two sides of the country has given me a true appreciation for both coasts. It has also provided an overabundance of cross country drives, flights and long distance relationship fun/misery! I love my family, my doggy Emma, fabulous wine, Anthropologie, politics, reading, being outdoors, exploring new cities, and good movies! My fiance and I are complete opposites, but somehow we have managed to fall completely and hopelessly in love.
I had just sauntered down the aisle, and met up with Mr. G under the beautiful arch at the end. Here is a complete shot of the room.
See how all the lights are on? My original vision for the ceremony room was to have dimmed lights. I wanted it to be romantic and dreamy with only twinkling candles to light our way. That obviously didn’t happen. But, after looking at the great pictures our photographer got, I am actually happy the lights were left on. Post-wedding bridezilla tantrum averted. Read more…

We met, fell in love, got engaged, and will be married at our alma mater (go lions!) in a traditional Catholic ceremony followed by a hotel reception with lots of DIY details. It means so much to have our families and friends meet at our favorite place on earth to celebrate our love for one another - I truly couldn't ask for anything more!

Mrs. Lamb, NorfolkAge and Occupation: 25, Homeland Security ConsultantFiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Graduate StudentEngagement Date: January 2009Wedding Date: January 2010Venue: Trinity Presbyterian Church/Harrison Opera HouseAbout Me: I’m a Homeland Security Consultant with a tendency towards pulling office pranks, taking lunch breaks, and drinking Wawa shakes. I’m also an English major with a serious obsession with alliteration and rhymes. While I’m not keeping America safe, I’m training for half marathons and the Escape from Alcatraz swim. Or moving for the third time this year. Or baking. Or wedding crafting. Or crying about wedding planning. All the while, I’m getting myself into Lucille Ball-esque scrapes and making Jim Carey-esque faces. Our big fat Czech/Baptist/Jewish/Italian wedding is a combination of vintage eclectic, DIY, and little spoonful of sugar from our Event Coordinator. It’s going to be a Norfolk flavored wedding with the verve of an only-daughter-blow-out bash!
Lesson Learned #647: Prior to the wedding, calculate how much cargo space all of your decorations, centerpieces, crafting supplies, and estimated wedding gifts will require.
So remember how my little studio was stuffed with wedding junk? Remember how I moved the week before the wedding? Remember how much stuff I made for the wedding? Yeah, I would have done well to really account for all that stuff. Unfortunately, on the Sunday after the wedding we were left to figure out how we were going to load everything into our Xterra which was already full of stuff leftover from my apartment. *Side note: Notice my liberal use of the term “our”. That’s the kind of stuff you can really throw around once you’re married. What’s yours is mine and what’s mine is yours, baby! End side note.*
AnyXterra, here’s a snapshot of what we needed to get from point A (the hotel) to point B (our house), via point C (our minimoon destination):
Mrs. Spaniel, Los AngelesAge and Occupation: 28, Law StudentFiance's Age and Occupation: 29, PsychologistWedding Date: March 2010Venue: Calamigos RanchAbout Me: I'm a third-year law student trying to balance graduating with starting my career, keeping up a relationship, and, oh yeah, planning an Old World, multi-cultural, "mountain lodge" wedding for 180 guests! A South Asian Jewish girl getting ready to marry my handsome Catholic Dane, I'm hoping to blend our cultures in our wedding just a bit more gently than by providing samosas as appetizers and offering æbleskiver for dessert. (Although that would also be awesome.)
Hive, this bee needs your help. My engagement photo shoot is coming up soon—yes, I know I’ve been engaged for well over a year already, but I’m still engaged! And that means pictures must be taken!—and us Spaniels just do not know what to wear!
First, some background: Mr. Spaniel and I have chosen a setting that we’re really excited about, though we had to pass on a lot of other awesome nearby locations. Goodbye, Downtown Los Angeles!
Mrs. Trail Mix, New YorkAge and Occupation: 26, PE TeacherFiance's Age and Occupation: 27, MBA StudentEngagement Date: March 2009Wedding Date: June 2010Venue: Tannery Pond at the Darrow SchoolAbout Me: I'm a country girl who somehow found herself living in the Big Apple and loving every minute of it. I'm planning a rustic, country-chic wedding in my hometown in upstate New York and it's going to be a Party with a capital P. White wine, flea markets and running keep me happy and my friends, family and fiance are my world. I'm a little bit crafty, a little bit crazy but mostly just crazy in love.
And it’s a not a good one. Actually, I think it could accurately be described as sheer terror. Or possibly extreme anxiety. Or maybe a combination of the two. In other words, I’m really really really really really effin’ nervous about our wedding. I’m now just under the 5-month mark and it’s beginning to hit home that this thing is really going to happen.
Part of the problem with having a long (15-month) engagement is that for most of the planning, the wedding seems impossibly far off. 13 months away? No problem. 10 months out? Easy peasy, can’t wait. Even being 8, 7 and 6 months away didn’t freak me out. But now? I’m officially freaked out, wacked out, tired out and just plain nervous!
There are so many things to be worried about, I’m even worrying that I’m not worrying about the right things. What if there’s some other glaring detail that I’ve completely overlooked that will come back to haunt me? Read more…
Mrs. Pretzel, SeattleAge and Occupation: 32 Learning, Training, and Development SpecialistFiance's Age and Occupation: 28 Manufacturing EngineerEngagement Date: September 2, 2009Wedding Date: July 2010Venue: Catholic Church & The Engine Room at Georgetown StudiosAbout Me: I’m just a thirty-something girl who never dreamed of weddings, poofy dresses, or ritzy receptions. I am a rabid knitter, except recently, wedding projects have replaced my yarn and needles. I’ve been fiercely independent since the age of 2 and 30 years later I think my family and friends had given up on me settling down and getting married.
Ironically, I had to go all the way to Seattle to find a boy from Purdue. We fell in love over Seattle Beers and cooking together. I love NASCAR, he loves Legos. I can talk like a Muppet and he can fit a whole McDonald’s cheeseburger in his mouth. We are a two reception couple, currently planning a brewery inspired bash.
After accepting Mr Pretzel’s creative invitation to be in our wedding, our 4 groomsmen and 2 ushers started to get curious what they would be wearing. Mr Pretzel shared with them the part of their wardrobe he was most excited about.
“No tux” said Mr Pretzel. (More on what “no tux” looks like up next) Read more…
Mrs. Swan, New York CityAge and Occupation: 31, Legislative RepresentativeFiance's Age and Occupation: 33, Finance GuyEngagement Date: August 9, 2008Wedding Date: August 2009Venue: Battery GardensAbout Me: I am an un-crafty but resourceful, Caribbean-born but New York-raised woman who's been known to analyze "Dancing with the Stars" and “So You Think You Can Dance”, buy stinky cheese, and use way too many parentheses. I keep lists for fun, am constantly daydreaming of my next international travel adventure (four continents down, three to go), debating sports (let’s Got Mets/Giants!) and dancing around my apartment to stay sane. I am excited to share our wedding planning journey as I hope to plan a streamlined, personal, and fun wedding with the greatest life partner I could ever imagine, Mr. Swan.
With all of this talk about me, I am sure you’ve been wondering where Mr. Swan is. Here he is!
Mr. Swan was pretty adamant that we do a first look in part because he really wanted us to spend as much time with our family and friends during the cocktail hour as possible. I didn’t mind a first look moment because I saw this time as an opportunity to have some quiet time, just the two of us. Read more…
