Mrs. Spaniel, Los AngelesAge and Occupation: 28, Law StudentFiance's Age and Occupation: 29, PsychologistWedding Date: March 2010Venue: Calamigos RanchAbout Me: I'm a third-year law student trying to balance graduating with starting my career, keeping up a relationship, and, oh yeah, planning an Old World, multi-cultural, "mountain lodge" wedding for 180 guests! A South Asian Jewish girl getting ready to marry my handsome Catholic Dane, I'm hoping to blend our cultures in our wedding just a bit more gently than by providing samosas as appetizers and offering æbleskiver for dessert. (Although that would also be awesome.)
I’ve shown you all the individual components of the invitations, but now that they’re off in space (or in peoples’ homes, since we’ve already received a few RSVPs!), I thought I would show you how they all came together and do a price breakdown.
This is what people will see first: my so-so handwriting with a simple roller pen, and standard USPS $0.44 wedding stamps.
I very, very briefly considered vintage and custom stamps, but the price was prohibitive and I just didn’t care that much. I also considered purchasing a calligraphy pen to address the envelopes, but I figured that my mediocre handwriting would stand out less if I used a simpler pen. It’s not perfect, but I’m not unhappy with how it came out. Read more…
Ms. Stripes, Los AngelesAge and Occupation: 29, Costume Designer/StylistFiancee's Age and Occupation: 29, ChefEngagement Date: June 23, 2009Wedding Date: September 2010Venue: Heritage Square MuseumAbout Me: I’m a type A creative with a messy streak, a loud mouth, and an uncanny knack for combining clashing patterns. I can usually be found with my nose in a book, my feet (or at least my toes) on the ground, my head in the clouds, and my arm around the prettiest girl you ever saw- aka
Fiancee Stripes. Together we’re planning a FUN vintage/modern French carnival wedding extravaganza and rockin’ dance party on a dime. (Say that three times fast!) Good coffee, long lists, Uniball pens, and my iPhone keep me sane, and making art, making trouble, and making out keep me happy! I love urban adventures, bike rides that end with afternoon drinks, breakfast for dinner, beautiful light, photography, travel, my furry family, and of course, my beautiful fiancee! I’m super excited to be here and can’t wait to share all our adventures as we craft a joyful, budget-friendly, design-savvy and all-around AWESOME wedding!
Lest you fear that I don’t have serious love for flowers of ALL stripes, I give you… The Tale of our Trip to The LA Flower Mart!
So, one day last September, the obsessive planner/crazy-bride-to-be in me had a brilliant idea: we should go to the Flower Mart to scout the types of flowers that would be available next year! (Did I say brilliant? I may have meant cuckoo…) But I didn’t stop there! Nope! I figured we could even make a few arrangements to test drive the milk glass that was already taking over our kitchen island. Yay! So I quickly threw together a flower inspiration board to guide our journey:
Mrs. Frozen Yogurt, DallasAge and Occupation: 28, Special Projects CoordinatorFiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Equity TraderEngagement Date: March 19, 2009Wedding Date: April 2010Venue: Marie Gabrielle, DallasAbout Me: I was born and raised in Texas, and have lived in several of the cities across the state, but I currently reside in Austin. I went to college in Boston and have a special place in my heart for the Northeast. I love reading, shopping, wine, reuniting with college friends that are scattered across the country, reality TV, trying out new recipes, and attempting all the DIY projects that come along with wedding planning. I'm a "bleeding heart, save the world type" and thankfully my job allows me to work on legislation and policy to help out those in need. I met Mr. Frozen Yogurt in a bar, though he doesn't even drink! And now we are planning a modern yet vintage wedding in Dallas while dealing with the trials and tribulations of first time homeownership.
OMG, Jillian Michaels, or JM as I like to call her, you are kicking my butt!
So I went through quite a few different exercise programs- P90X, Yoga, Pilates and now the 30 Day Shred. While each is good for different reasons, my favorite is the Shred. I feel like I’m working really hard, but I don’t have to commit too much time. Also, in addition to JM making me work hard, my dog also steps in to act as my own personal trainer:
However, as much as I think this is a great workout, I’m developing a little bit of a love/hate relationship with the Shred. Read more…

Mrs. Sewing, San Mateo, CA/Honolulu, HIAge and Occupation: 24, Electrical EngineerFiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Electrical EngineerEngagement Date: June 27, 2009Wedding Date: July 2010Venue: Anela Garden Chapel & Japanese Cultural Center, HonoluluAbout Me: I'm an easily entertained, compulsive idea-scheming machine who loves good art, good food, and a good engineering challenge. I'm planning a half-destination wedding on the beautiful island of Oahu - imagine a plethora of movies, art and games; savory Hawaiian food; blended Chinese and Japanese cultural details; lush, fragrant tropical flowers and all the air conditioning a NorCal native could want! And once I marry the love of my life, we'll come back to the 'mainland' to party it up all over again in my hometown of Salinas, the salad-bowl capital of the world!
Last year, the Sewings’ resolution was to not waste a single weekend. We went to museums, volunteer events, zoos, concerts and street fairs to satisfy the requirement. It was wonderful, and we had a lot of fun on our mandatory dates.
And then we got engaged. Suddenly, there’s no money for concerts, no time to use our zoo or museum memberships. Planning has come and it has come to stay. That business class at the community college we signed up for before? We struggled to keep up with all the material. Add to that nine hours of work, exercise time, Bible study, and dinner cooking? The carefree life we enjoyed before is temporarily on hold for this year. And the horrible thing is - I’m positively sure that I have a lighter load compared to most brides-to-be out there!
There is one thing I’ve shelved, however, that feels worse than all others.
Mrs. Nachos, Chicago/St. ThomasAge and Occupation: 33, Commercial Real Estate & HairstylistFiance's Age and Occupation: 36, Radio ProducerEngagement Date: May 22, 2009Wedding Date: April 2010Venue: Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort, St. ThomasAbout Me: I'm a happy, laid back city girl that can find the silver lining in any situation. An optimist at heart, my motto is to turn your "what ifs?" into "so whats!". My fiance is a radio producer and the biggest Cubs fan you'll meet - our apartment decor definitely shows it. He and I grew up next door to each other and because of it, we have the best home videos and easiest holiday dinners. We are planning an intimate wedding in the Virgin Islands and a cocktail party in June for 150 of our closest friends.
… minimum price! T-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-J-Maxx! Sorry, I had to.
Anywho, if you remember, our home party is going to cost us a minimum of $5,000. This price includes a drink package and appetizers for each guest. We had a few options regarding what kind of drinks and food we could get, so I made yet another spreadsheet to break it all down and figure out exactly how many people we could have to be right at the $5,000 mark…
Yeah, I’m a nerd. And I made a HUGE mistake. Read more…
Mrs. Buttons, Clearwater, FLAge and Occupation: 24, "Working on it"Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Financial ServicesEngagement Date: June 13, 2009Wedding Date: May 2010Venue: Carlouel Yacht ClubAbout Me: I'm a self proclaimed perfectionist and a professional nomad (seriously, I've lived in TX, WI, MI, FL, NC, and now VA!). I love wine, cooking, curling up with a good book (nerd alert!), spoiling the furbaby, and of course, the wonderful Mr. Buttons! We are planning a lighthearted and whimsical wedding (with a good deal of DIY projects) in Clearwater, Florida, but from a distance of 800 miles away! We are looking forward to sharing our day with our family and friends, and most importantly, starting our lives together as husband and wife!
I have acquired a love of Manzanita branches. This will tie in nicely with the bird/tree décor inspiration that I’ve accumulated thus far! My biggest inspiration, and hopefully a huge focal point for our venue, is a wish tree guest book.
This is the initial photograph that sparked my interest…
I love the idea of setting up the tree in a place where it will make a statement.
And I have the perfect location for it… Read more…
Mrs. Guinea Pig, Baltimore, MD Age and Occupation: 26, PhD student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Operations Director at a non-profit Engagement Date: December 25, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010Venue: The Chesapeake Bay Beach Club About Me: I'm a tomboy science nerd whose girly side has made a startling appearance thanks to wedding planning! I love to bake, knit and sew but I also ride a motorcycle (that Mr. Guinea Pig wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole). We live with our three crazy cats and love to read, travel, watch movies, and do home improvement projects together! My parents/family are Canadian but I'm definitely American, although I've lived in 5 different countries, 6 different states, and speak Russian fluently. Mr. GP and I met online (did I mention I'm a scientist?) and had a whirlwind romance - now we can't wait to get married & celebrate with all our friends and family in a blue and yellow waterfront affair!
I never really thought too much about veils, even after trying on wedding dresses. I narrowed down what I didn’t like pretty quickly as consultants tried to get me to don giant poofy pieces of tulle: I didn’t want a blusher, or any added volume at the top. I’m already tall, I don’t need 3 inches of tulle floating above me making me look like a giant. I also discovered that I really love mantilla style veils, but once I bought an all lace dress, I started having second thoughts about a veil that also had lace on it.
Since I didn’t care much about the veil and our wedding isn’t thaaaat formal, I figured the veil should probably not be chapel or cathedral length, either. No matter how much I love photos like the one Miss Scissors posted: Read more…

Mrs. Hamster, New York CityAge and Occupation: 28, Finance GalFiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Finance GuyEngagement Date: March 9, 2009Wedding Date: May 2010Venue: The Pierre HotelAbout Me: I'm an original Jersey girl living it up in the big NYC! I love baking for others, hosting brunches, and exploring NYC with my mans. Besides Mr. Hamster (of course), I'm attracted to shiny things, bold colors, snacks, matching and coordination, pork and duck fats, miniature versions of things, corny jokes and puns. We are planning a swanky Spring wedding in the heart of NYC, followed by a second reception in Singapore. From one city that never sleeps to another - I can't imagine a more exciting ride!
As a couple for which the decision of where to have dinner yields multiple discussions and analysis (most common answer: “Now I’m too hungry to walk outside! Let’s order in”), choosing our honeymoon destination was no easy task. Should we go for a lazy beach getaway or an old city tour? How long would the honeymoon be? When should we go? After months of deliberation, we finally came to a decision - we’re going on safari, baby!!
Mrs. Dachshund, Fresno, CAAge and Occupation: 24, Legal Office AssistantFiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Computer TechnicianEngagement Date: April 18, 2009Wedding Date: May 2010Venue: Victorian Gardens of Two SistersAbout Me: I’m a 24-year-old Californian bride-to-be who found love in the most unlikely of places - an online video game! I’m a farmer’s daughter living in rural Central California, but will always have a special place in my heart for the city. My future husband is a 27-year-old extraordinarily tall, exceptionally cute, and undoubtedly Canadian boy who was able to sweep me off my feet and take me for his bride. I love color, folksy songs that make me smile, interior design, kettle corn, my one-year-old puppy, Juno, and my fiance, of course! We’re planning a DIY garden wedding with a laundry-list of projects, all while dealing with the bureaucracy that is American Immigration!
Mooonths ago I fell in love with the most AMAZING shoes ever. Like, there are a lot of shoes that I dig, but these took my breath away. I would have ordered them right away had it not been for the $165 price tag. ($190 after tax!). I haven’t had shoes that expensive since, well… ever. I went back and forth on the matter for a few days, and finally I decided to bite the bullet and buy them. They are for my wedding after all, right? So I logged into Anthropologie.com, clicked on “Shoes and Bags,” then “Heels,” and clicked through page 1 (Hrm, that’s funny, they were on the first page a few days ago), page 2 (uhhh), page 3…
My perfect shoes– the ONLY shoes I could ever imagine myself wearing on my wedding day—were sold out. Apparently I wasn’t the only one whose breath they stole. Needless to say I was more than a little upset. I called Anthro’s customer service line, and was informed that they were completely sold out. I got the manufacturer’s name; still no luck. Defeated, I gave up my search.
Mrs. Pencils, Washington DC/Frederick, MDAge and Occupation: 24, Program Director, Education Non ProfitFiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Administrative Assistant, Ocean Conservation Non ProfitEngagement Date: July 26, 2008Wedding Date: May 2010Venue: Morningside InnAbout Me: I'm a nerdy Northwestern girl who always knew she was meant to live in the East, harboring a deep love of ice cream, underwear, Diet Coke with a splash of Coca-Cola, pashminas, scrapbooking, stationery, wall calendars and books written for preteens. I think every day should include good thin crust pizza, chocolate, an obscure historical monument, lots of laughter, a dash of wedding planning and, of course, amazing Mr. Pencils! I'm loving the adventure of planning a Maryland wedding and Rocky Mountain reception, and most of all, I just love love!
I had no idea what a Gocco was until about two months ago. To this day, I have no real idea how it works. I realize there is some sort of color transfer, involving bulbs and screens and some magic, and somehow words and designs appear. Given my adoration of stationery, I’m pretty sure if I had some inclination as to how this worked, I’d enjoy this magical machine and be out a couple hundred bucks… so it’s probably best I remain in the dark.
Not one single person lives in the town that Mr. Pencils and I are getting married, and about half live more than 200 miles away. In the interest of our guests, and because I think they’re fun, we decided to send out save-the-dates.
Mr. Pencils and I had received a magnet save-the-date from a coworker of his back in 2007 so I tucked that little idea in my back pocket until our engagement. Of course, since 2007, these have become incredibly popular and two of the three weddings I attended this year included magnet save-the-dates. Undeterred by their popularity (and potential overuse by brides—who cares?), I hit up my friends for their suggestions and settled on a company that was pretty inexpensive, had tons of options, and incredibly easy software to create our STDs. Mrs. French Bulldog, Orange CountyAge and Occupation: 28, Administrative Assistant & Interior Design StudentFiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Purchasing AnalystEngagement Date: November 8, 2008Wedding Date: August 2009Venue: Bernardo WineryAbout Me: I've lived in Atlanta, Dallas and Laguna Niguel; although I've lived in Orange County, CA most my life, I'm a Southerner at heart. I work full time for a Commercial General Contractor (aka my father) and I go to school for Interior Design at night. I love modern design, music, wine, crafting, DMailing, my family, my Westies, and of course, Mr Frenchie! Mr Frenchie and I met 3 years ago on Match.com and have been best friends ever since. I love his "old soul" and how he laughs with his whole body, among many other things. We are planning our summer wedding at the winery near his hometown, just 45 minutes south of Orange County.
