This super-tall, Southern, loud, quirky, neurotic artist is marrying a German, quiet, silly, super-amazing roboticist in an eclectic, funky, fun, snazzy, technicolored June wedding. Anything is game for this shindig, for it is all about us! Adventures in Color-Picking

February 1st, 2010 @ 9:19 am by Mrs. Scissors

I don’t think it comes as a surprise to any of you that I LOVE COLOR. Love it, love to attack it, smush it, roll around with it. This undying love for color has made wedding planning a wee bit difficult, because I’ve realized that I need some sort of basic palette. I can’t just say “I want every color possible” and expect to keep my sanity.

That is why I developed this little project to help! I like to call it…

Adventures in Color-Picking : wedding color schemes Stickit stickit

Why? Because I like how it sounds, and it was totally and completely 100% free. Hah, take that world! You can have your color, and play with it too.

STEP 1: Go to your favorite big box. Home Depot, Lowe’s, or Walmart. I chose Home Depot.

Adventures in Color-Picking : wedding color schemes Themen themen

STEP 2: Nonchalantly go over to the paint chip section.

STEP 3: GO APE-SHIT.

Get all of the colors that you think you might want or need for your color-palette-testing extravaganza. I was with Mr. Scissors, and we were planning to pretend that we were picking out paint colors for our “new house” if anyone asked. No one gave three toots what we were doing. Paint chips are 100% free.

STEP 4: Leave whatever big box you’re in, wave to the check-out ladies, “Bye! Thanks!” and go on your merry way.

STEP 5: Return home and assess your bounty.

Adventures in Color-Picking : wedding color schemes 4314846 1o

Pretty sweet spread, no? I was as giddy as a schoolgirl at that point.

STEP 6: Gather your supplies.

Adventures in Color-Picking : wedding color schemes 431484601 2o

I just used things I already had around.

  1. PAINT CHIPS
  2. Olfa box cutter (I prefer Olfa boxcutters to X-Acto knives. I get more precision results with said box-cutters. My professors were always stunned by this. Plus, it makes me feel like a BAMF.)
  3. Scale (You can just use a ruler. I only have scales around the apartment. My giant metal rulers were AWOL, aka I left them at my studio. Anyway, I digress.)
  4. 6H Pencil (You can use the hardest-lead pencil you have. I used 6H because it would produce the least amount of graphite dust, and it is very light. If all you have is standard 2B, no big.)
  5. Scissors (HA!)
  6. Handy-dandy cutting mat (If you don’t have this, you can just use a piece of cardboard, chipboard, or an old magazine.)

In truth, you can use just scissors. I just like to be all weird about what tools I use.

STEP 7: Proceed to cut down all of your paint chips to the same size.

Choose a size that minimizes the amount of wording on the front. I messed up a few, so the paint names are still on there, but it’s slight. Measure and draw and cut ON THE BACK of the paint chips, not the front. That way if your lines aren’t totally correct, the fronts won’t be boogered up. The reason you’re doing this step is so that you don’t get biased or confused because some colors are larger than others. Trust me, it will happen. (Or at least it does for me!)

STEP 8: After they’re all the same size, move to a different location and assess your spread. Bring along some white paper or poster-board if your surface isn’t white.

Adventures in Color-Picking : wedding color schemes 431484602 3o

  1. Fabric swatches
  2. Lovely paint chips that are all beautified
  3. Plain paper

Adventures in Color-Picking : wedding color schemes 4315582 4o

Oooh, pretty. (That is glue on my table, btw. Not food or gross stuff. I swear).

Adventures in Color-Picking : wedding color schemes 431484603 5o

STEP 9: Lay out your colors on the white paper and PLAY!!!

Adventures in Color-Picking : wedding color schemes 431558201 6o

Adventures in Color-Picking : wedding color schemes 431484604 7o

Let your fabric swatches play, too.

Adventures in Color-Picking : wedding color schemes 431484605 8o

Mmmm, grays!

Play until your little heart is content.

Adventures in Color-Picking : wedding color schemes 4315583 9o

You’re finished! Or at least with the work part. I just stack mine up when I’m done and stick them in a clear zippy bag. Once you have YOUR COLORS, I strongly suggest you take those guys and attach them to your planning folder, binder, kitchen-wall, any-and-everywhere.

Who else is a paint-chip lover? Have they helped you in organizing your color thoughts?

Haha, my FI wants to go to Lowe’s and do the same thing! He thinks berry is purple…. and so does my MOH. Berry is more of a wine, not a purple!! Definitely need some paint chips to show them what I’m talking about!

I totally stole a crap ton of paint chips from Lowes. I didn’t cut them down and get all intense about it, but it really helped. :D

Fun idea, may have to try it.

My mom has cut out pictures of all of our dresses and “plays paperdolls” with them. She is kind of weird.

Holy cow, I do this all the time! I have random paint chips laying all over my house for different projects I’m working on. Granted I’m not as precise as you with all the cutting and other artistic things I can’t do. I like to punch a hole in the cornerof all paint chips I like and stick an “O” ring through them so I can carry it around like a keychain.

Haha, yes!! I have gone to Home Depot many many times for the sole purpose of stealing paint chips. I’m a wee bit addicted…

My mom is practically color blind and since we are planning from two different cities one of the first things we did was to go get paint swatches. All of our vendors think we are crazy when we pull out our swatches but it really makes life SO much simpler!

@Miss Ribbons: I used to do that. Don’t judge, hater. :p Nah, it is a little creepy. I still like to cut up the Neiman Marcus “The Book” and make montages.

@caszos: I’ll bet! This is the only hard evidence way to show THESE ARE MY COLORS DAMNIT.

FYI to everyone- A neutral middle-gray works WONDERS for color comparison backing. Get a white back and a middle-gray back. (Not cool or warm, if you’re not sure… ask. Just don’t go to a craft store. Go to an art store. The people at Michael’s are clueless. I have a personal vendetta aganist Michael’s. But I digress…)

Hehe, this is a great post. You don’t get actual paint chips here, what you can pick up is booklets which lists every colour that the paint range has and do essentially the same thing. I picked up a few for a job I was doing and ended up choosing our wedding colours out of it!

When I was a kid my dad would leave me in the paint to dept while he shopped so i could collect ALL the paint chips. I just had stacks of them in my bedroom. I would organize them and make cut out projects with them. To this day I still keep stacks of them hanging around.

This is a great idea! I should have done this a looong time ago rather than just talking in generalities about our colors.

I absolutely used paint chips - I even took a bunch of them out to the gardening section of the store I was in to match the colors to the hydrangeas I liked!

Scissors, you and I are two of the kind. I routinely leave Home Depot (Lowe’s, Menards, wherever) with a shifty armful of paint swatches. Not just for painting, either! I have sketchbooks full of combinations for various projects. Yet somehow it never occurred to me to use them when fiddling with wedding colors!

I am sometime ashamed to admit my extreme love of paint chips and my PANTONE books…don’t even get me started on that magic! I love the idea of rolling around in all that color!!!! :)
