Finding My Sole Mate

February 1st, 2010 @ 1:56 pm by Mrs. Trail Mix

This is not a mushy gushy post about how much I love Mr Trail Mix (I would never inflict that upon you all). Instead, I’m here with a public service announcement for anyone who will be wearing high heels in an outdoor setting.

I am a girl who loves her high heels. At only 5’3″ on a good day, heels are a necessity for me when I go out in order to feel confident. Plus, it’s hard to strut in flats and I must confess, I have been known to strut my stuff on a night out with my girlfriends. Therefore, high heels for our wedding are a must!

However, my wedding is going to be outdoors. In a big field. That’s not exactly a surface conducive to confident strutting when wearing heels, right?

Enter the Solemate.

FMIL Trail Mix clued me into these bad boys when I had mentioned to her that I might have to wear wedges since I didn’t want my heels to get stuck in the ground for the wedding. Now I love me a pretty pair of wedges as much as the next shoe-obsessed lass does but I wasn’t completely sold on the look for our  wedding.

Solemates are little rubber/plastic gadgets that slip onto the heels of your shoes, widening the base of the heel, therefore spreading the distribution of your weight a bit and allowing you to avoid sinking into the ground. BRILLIANT!

Here’s what they look like:

They also come in clear if you prefer that to the black. Either way, I think it’s a genius idea that’s going to allow me to wear my beloved 3″ high heels without worrying about walking on an uneven surface or that my heels will get dirty from sinking into the ground.

While Solemates are not exactly cheap ($9.95 per pair) they do have a deal that if you order 10 pairs, you get 10% off your purchase. They also have a special discount for brides that allows you to pass the 10% discount on to your friends and family.

I think this would be a great little present for your bridesmaids or family members if your wedding is going to be held in an outdoor location, don’t you?

Has anyone tried these or heard of them before? Do you have another solution for high heels on grass?

P.S. - I know you all read that hoping for some shoe porn, and even though I mostly already talked about my shoes in this post, here’s a sneak peek of my oh-so-lovely heels (full post to come shortly!):

Aren’t they dream-delicious???

I have heard of those! (Or another brand that does something quite similar). I have heard though that they just “help” and may not remedy the situation all together. Especially if the ground is a little damp.

I’m getting married in a field, too. I opted to go with wedges, fancy looking wedges though. Yellow Patent ones. But that was only because I found a pair that I love. If I couldn’t, I was planning to go the heels-with-solemates route.

They don’t work as well as they want you to believe. My heels kept slipping out of them and they still sunk :(

yes, we want shoe porn. what a tease! good call on the sole mates–if you’re concerned at all about the previous commenters’ points, maybe you could give them a test run before the wedding?

@msashleymarie:
I hear ya!

I think it is a fabulous idea as well and will most likely go this route. The problem is I hear about brides intending to use these and no one ever comes back to tell me if it actually worked!

I wore these last April for my outdoor wedding. They worked amazingly! I used the clear pair on my heels.

I use these for my work heels all the time and they’re great - they give me more support and prevent my heels from getting torn up when walking on pavement.

I had heard about these type of things a few years ago (huge legal battle near where I live), however they were slightly different and maybe a more effective shape and more discreet? There are two companies and I believe they both ship internationally. One is called Clean Heels Heel Stoppers and the other, Starlettos. I haven’t used them before but plan to at our garden wedding. Good luck!

I used them for my wedding in September. They were great, but actually, I didn’t know what it would have been like without them. You might watch to check them mid-way through the day/night. Mine slipped through the holes and got all cockeyed- which was irrelevant since the reception was inside!

Ooh! This is so timely as buying 10 of these is on my to-do list - would love to know from the people that used them if they work on a slightly-thicker-than-a-stiletto-heel! I also love high heels and could not bear getting married in flats or wedges (also getting hitched in a field) and my chosen heels are 4″ (my usual - I’m a trooper! :)). BUT the heel is definitely thicker than a stiletto so do these things stretch a bit? Or are they too thin to accomodate? Any input appreciated before I commit!

You are my HERO! I am also having part of my wedding in the grass and after ordering over 12 pairs of shoes from Zappos, nothing was working. these cute little pieces will allow me the shoes of my dreams, and the stability to match. Have you tested them yet?
