Picking Your Anniversary

Picking Your Anniversary : wedding anniversary 2008 02

source

How did you pick your anniversary date? Did you ever think of it that way? I mean, it is right? Sure, it’s your wedding date, too. But really, you won’t be celebrating your wedding each year. You’ll be celebrating your anniversary, or marriage age, so to speak. This is how Mr. Hot Wings wanted to think about it, at least.

At first, I thought it would be fun to be married and always celebrate our anniversary on New Year’s Eve.

Mr. Hot Wings even has an uncle and aunt who did that and he always talked about it being the best of times. So of course I thought that would be a winner. We’re both academics. We always get a long winter break. It’s the perfect time for a vacation. But oh no. Mr. Hot Wings wouldn’t even give the idea the time of day. He just despised the idea of celebrating our anniversary in the cold winter.

So our next biggest break is summer break. Future In Laws Hot Wings requested we not get married in June because they would be celebrating their 30th anniversary and are going on a big Hawaii trip. Mr. Hot Wings and I teach in July. So then there was August. We knew we wanted to be married in San Diego. I already have an academic conference where I am a co-chair on the conference planning committee that will be held in San Diego. So it was done. We would be married the week after the conference to avoid needing to fly back and forth. I looked it up on the internet to check out the lunar calendar. This day also happens to be the most auspicious day of August 2010! Score! Not that it would change our minds, but it would help with convincing my Vietnamese parents. Mr. Hot Wings loves the idea of celebrating our anniversary in the summertime when the weather is always likely to be nice. Is it too practical? Does it lack sentiment and romance? Maybe that’s just how we roll… we’re dorky academics who want to play in the sun.

Did you pick your wedding/anniversary date out of sentiment or practicality?

Ours was mainly just a matter of “I want to get married in July or August because that’s when it’s pretty here” but I definitely thought about the numbers and how they looked. Seriously, the reason we’re getting married on July 24 instead of July 31 or August 7 is that I really like the way even numbers look. :) And yeah, I’m with Mr. Hot Wings, I want our anniversary to be a time when we can take fun warm vacations to celebrate!

Sentiment. We wanted to get married on the day we first met, but it happened to be both Sunday, and Mother’s Day, so we went with a day later in the same month. We originally wanted to pick a month where nobody else in our immediate family had a birthday or anniversary- so we’d stand out, but August in Chicago is HOOOOOT, so utimately we went with a month near and dear. Plus if we ever have a daughter I plan on her middle name being May; the month we met, fell in love, and wed- how apropos! :-)

Circumstances choose for us. We ended up with Halloween.

@Littlest Birds- we did the SAME thing! “Which looks better 5-21-10 or 5-14-10?” We looked up everything under the sun to help us decide! Shrek 4 is coming out on May 21, and Shrek 3 was the first movie we saw together, so we picked that day. In the end the chapel was only available on the 21st, so they would have made the choice for us; it just happened to be the day we picked ourselves! Meant to be I guess!

Practicality. I teach, so anything during the school year is out, and he was graduating from grad school, so June was out. My parents were also married in June, so I wanted “my own month” for our wedding. I guess that might count as both practical and sentimental then…

Sentiment. We were both born on a 2, we started dating on a 2, so we just figured that we would go with the 24th of our favorite month- July. We would have the 2 for us as individuals and also the day that we got together, and then the 4 for us combining our lives together and becoming one. It’s kind of corny, I know… but it’s special for us :]

I think that’s a great way to think about it. We picked out date mostly b/c of venue pricing, but in the long run it’s going to work out well for us, I think. We got married on Sept. 11th, which means if the govt. ever decides to make it a national holiday (Patriot’s Day, anyone?) we may always have a vacation day on our anniversary.

We choose 1-1-11 for 3 reasons:
1. It is a cool date and a great way to start the year.
2. We will always be off on that date.
3. When we have kids they will be out of school and can go stay with their grandparents when we take trips. lol

@LittlestBirds: @alohababy28: I love it! I didn’t think about how the numbers would look, but now I totally would have done that had I thought about it.
@alohababy28: That’s adorable you thought about your children!

i always thought how, with some couples there is a feeling of sentiment that goes with picking their wedding date but for a lot of couples, it was really just arbitrary. like, hey, the perfect venue is available this day. let’s do it then! cracks me up

Part practicality, part sentiment. We knew we wanted to get married in the fall because that’s when we met and we both love the season and the colours. We have friends getting married mid-September, so that pushed us into October and then scheduling conflicts throughout the month (Thanksgiving one weekend, FMIL out of town another weekend, FBIL joining the army) made us choose October 30th.

We also thought about New Years Eve, it would be so much fun! But, due to logistics (FBIL would be deployed by that time) we decided against it. We WILL be celebrating our anniversary on my b-day though, so it’s even better than NYE- double presents!

More practicality than symbolism since we based our date around a certain event called Oktoberfest for our honeymoon. Although the date itself (the 18th) is a month exactly after our anniversary of when we met. OH and little did we realize our wedding date is his ex’s birthday. haha! oooops

That’s such a smart way to look at it! We looked at it more from a standpoint of when FI wouldn’t be in school for the wedding! Summer was way too expensive, so Christmas break it was!

We totally went with practicality. We didn’t want to get married in our birth months (May and June) and we knew we wanted a summer wedding. In August SisterMoo moves internationally so that was out. That left us July. The first two weekends were out for family birthdays which left us the last two weekends. When we went to book it we asked if the first of our 2 options was free and it was so we went with it.
Oh, but we are getting married in the year of the Tiger which is my Chinese year. Which is pretty good :)

We chose July in Australia because it’s the coldest month!!! My FH loves the cold (not that it gets below 0 celcius here) and wanted to have a chilly wedding! Plus, where ever we travel overseas it will be summer! Score!!

Actually, our date was suggested by the events manager at the location we wanted. When I emailed her to ask about availability in October (we love fall in Boston!) she said they still had 10/10/10 available. BOOM. It’s a long weekend so the fact that it’s a Sunday shouldn’t put *too* much of a burden on our guests, and it’ll be easy to remember! Plus, in Roman numerals that’s X/X/X and I couldn’t get over the hilarity of a triplle X wedding. I’m a dork :)

@Miss Rainbow: You better hold everyone to the double presents!
@hungrybruno: heehee.. you made me giggle too. I hadn’t thought about the roman numerals part. That’s hilarious!

Oh we definitely picked our date out of practicality - we went for the holiday weekend! It also happened to be an auspicious date, so that was a bonus :)
