Mrs. Pudding's Picture
Mrs. Pudding, Greater Toronto Area/Vermont Age and Occupation: 26, High School Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Computer Engineer Engagement Date: August 2008 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Catholic Ceremony, Cultural Hall Reception About Me: Quite literally a citizen of the world, I was born in Poland, grew up in Canada, and now live in the beautiful state of Vermont. I love reading historical biographies, multi-tasking, teasing my hair, and, despite my height, wearing high heeled shoes. I am the ultimate klutz with an uncanny ability to put on a graceful front. Mr. Pudding and I have been dating for over six years, and are very excited to finally merge our (very large) families. We are planning a traditional Polish-Catholic wedding that is anything but predictable.

Different St(d)rokes

February 2nd, 2010 @ 12:36 pm by Mrs. Pudding

OK, I have a bit of a confession to make. Some of you commented about the amount of work that went into our STDs, and I must admit that they took a considerable amount of effort to complete. Still, I withheld a little detail from you, and I have finally decided to come clean.

With our wedding guest list approaching 230, I only made about 30 STDs. I decided early on that not everyone on our list would get the blood, sweat and tears version. This decision was a fairly easy one for me, since save the dates are really not common in my family. Plus, all of my relatives have had our wedding date circled on their calendars for almost a year and a half now. :)

I probably wouldn’t have sent STDs at all if it wasn’t for the fact that Mr. Pudding’s family is traveling to our wedding. They needed to be given an appropriate amount of time to plan the trip, and I wanted to do this in an official way.

So, all of Mr. Pudding’s relatives received STDs in the mail. We also have quite a few friends traveling from far away. I sent out the beautiful versions to my friends from England, the Middle East, and Australia. But Mr. Pudding’s friends, as well as local friends, all got an email. I felt a little bad about this at first, but then I had the chance to talk to one of Mr. P’s buddies, who told me that I shouldn’t even bother sending him a paper invite. He said that an email was enough, and I should save the money on postage.

What about you? Did you send STDs to all of your guests, or just the ones traveling from afar? Did you bother with them at all?

We only sent STD’s to family members and friends from far away, our work friends etc didn’t get them (mostly in case we change our minds about who to invite from our jobs - to avoid etiquette dilemmas)

We’re sending out to everyone. Mainly because it was easier than tracking down email addresses (FH’s sister got married just over a year ago and had all the lists but no email addresses).
But, in today’s techno-age, I can totally see email invites becoming the norm (probably much to the chagrin of the postal service).

I think it’s a brilliant idea! Plus, you’re helping the environment by not using as much paper :)

I took the buy-it-yourself route when it came to STDs, so everyone got one. It saved my sanity!

You were SMART! I wish I hadn’t sent STDs to everyone, as it locked us into a slightly-uncomfortably-large guest list. It sounds like you were just sensible :)

We emailed all of our STDs. We got a lot of compliments on them, and I don’t think anyone really thought twice about the fact they were emailed. If they did, we didn’t hear about it, and I didn’t really care. It was a lot less paper, a lot less work and a lot less headache. :)

We used a similar tactic. We only sent them to family and friends who actually would understand what a Save The Date IS! For example, most of my extended family did not get one because they would not be able to read it (English) nor need ti because they are all in NYC and others would know through word of mouth.

I think that this is a great idea! You save $$ and waste, and you get to put more effort and time into the ones you do send out.

you’ve been holding out! i think that was a sanity-saving decision, and allowed you to give extra oomph to the ones that would be receiving save the dates. awesome!

So smart! We sent them to everyone, but ours were no where near as fancy as yours.

We’ll be sending them to everyone, but we don’t have any international guests!

We didn’t send them at all. FH is very much against the idea of using more paper than we should (we’re pretty good on recycling). So we just sent out invites instead and sent them early to our OOT guests.

We sent them to everyone, but mostly because the wedding is over a holiday weekend and we knew people would need to plan. Ours were inexpensive postcards though, so it was not a big deal.

We’re sending them to everyone, but mainly just because ours is very close to the holidays, so I want to give everyone plenty of notice!

That was our original plan too! But then we realized that 70% of our guests would be traveling, so it wouldnt save us to much effort or money and then people might feel left out - so stds for all it was!

I think that is a perfectly reasonable way to do it - a lot of the older generation who got our STDs had no idea what they were or why they would be receiving them AND invitations!

We didn’t send them to everyone, either… only 60 of our 115 eventual invitees got them.

I think that sounds like a nice compromise :)

probably everyone but our guest list probably won’t be as large as yours. if it were larger, i’d just send it to those who would have to make travel arrangements

I JUST sent mine out yesterday. To everyone. I thought of it as practice for the formal invites– to make sure I had all the addresses together and correct so I wouldn’t be scrambling at the last minute for the invitations.
