Mrs. Sewing's Picture
Mrs. Sewing, San Mateo, CA/Honolulu, HI Age and Occupation: 24, Electrical Engineer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Electrical Engineer Engagement Date: June 27, 2009 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Anela Garden Chapel & Japanese Cultural Center, Honolulu About Me: I'm an easily entertained, compulsive idea-scheming machine who loves good art, good food, and a good engineering challenge. I'm planning a half-destination wedding on the beautiful island of Oahu - imagine a plethora of movies, art and games; savory Hawaiian food; blended Chinese and Japanese cultural details; lush, fragrant tropical flowers and all the air conditioning a NorCal native could want! And once I marry the love of my life, we'll come back to the 'mainland' to party it up all over again in my hometown of Salinas, the salad-bowl capital of the world!
About Mrs. Sewing

Yukata? Yes!

February 2nd, 2010 @ 10:21 am by Mrs. Sewing

Sewing-Mom called me today to tell me a certain international package had come in the mail! (I usually have packages sent to her house since my apartment complex is prone to “misplacing” boxes.)

She went ahead and sent me a few pictures of the contents:

Yukata? Yes! : wedding cultural dress 23 2

Two brand new yukata from Mr. Sew’s parents in Japan! Whee! If you remember, I previously wrote about how much I wanted to wear something from Mr. Sew’s culture for our wedding. Now it looks like I’ll be able to - at least for engagement pictures!

I love how the geta (shoes) also match the yukata fabric!

The geta are worn with tabi, which are socks made to be worn with sandals.

I have a collection of them, actually. Like a complete nerd, I used to wear them around college with my Rainbow sandals on cold days. However, for some reason, they are all made with printed fabrics. I’ll need to find some plain white ones for Mr. Sewing and me to wear!

We’ll also have to figure out how to wear them properly - tying an obi (sash) is no joke! It can become quite complicated if you have an intricate kimono on.

Yukata? Yes! : wedding cultural dress Obis

(source) No wonder they take so long to put on!

Luckily, I’ll probably end up only trying a butterfly obi knot. It’s much simpler, and commonly seen on yukata. Isn’t it cute?

Mr. Sewing will use the men’s obi style, which looks like significantly less work:

The yukata were sent to us ahead of our engagement picture time for the sole purpose of practicing with the obi tying. I’ve got about a week to learn, but I think they will make for some pretty awesome photos!

Anyone else have cultural outfits that require instructions? Are you wearing any as part of your wedding or engagement ensemble?

The obi looks complicated, but as long as you have someone to help you, its not that bad, really! I have a collection of obis (oby? obies?) and a yakata a friend bought me while visiting over there. If you follow the instructions on tying an obi (I just googled it) it can be a lot of fun! Frankly, I think the bow is a great choice, but I’m biased as its my favorite way to tie an obi! :) Good luck!

So pretty!
I actually have a yukata too, because I lived in Japan and attended Obon festivities, and it is the exact same colour as yours! Weirrddd! And same obi too, and similar geta. It’s such a fab colour combination!
Anyways, you are both going to look great!

Try this site for instructions.
Putting on kimono or yukata is called kitsuke. It may help you find some other sites. Try youtube as well!
Good luck! Great sets BTW!
