Ms Potato Chips's Picture
Ms. Potato Chips, Boston/Narragansett RI Age and Occupation: 29, PhD Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Personal Trainer/Business Owner/Physical Therapy Assistant Engagement Date: January 1, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2010 Venue: The Narragansett Towers About Me: A semi-professional bookworm, if I could be a literary character I’d be a cross between Jo March and Jane Eyre, only better accessorized and much lazier. My hobbies include sleeping in, seasonal brews, running, Trader Joe’s, and watching Unwrapped and Good Eats with Mr. Potato Chips. I harbor an irrational fear of tulle, crafts, things that are fussy, and overuse of the phrase "Your Special Day". After a year or seven together, down the aisle we go, slouching toward adulthood and planning a Rhodie party with equal parts whimsy, cheer, and pizza.
About Ms Potato Chips

Division of Wedding Labor

February 3rd, 2010 @ 5:41 pm by Ms Potato Chips

If I were the only one planning our wedding, I would’ve gotten sick of it long ago and handed the reins over to Mama Chips. She likes being in control. I like throwing out ideas and going with the flow.

If Mr. Potato Head were the one planning the wedding, venues and vendors would be booked… but on his own timeline. It’d be down to the wire, but it would get done.

Luckily, we have a good system going. Loosely categorized:

I tippity-tap-tap at the Google machine and research vendors, ideas, and inspiration. I set things in motion.

Mr. Potato Head makes the calls and writes the emails and organizes the contracts. He gets things done.

There I am, toiling away at work! Poor PChipz! (Source)

It works for us, for our strengths and likes/dislikes. We’re both (roughly) at the same level of wedding stress (so far it’s low, but maybe that will change). We both feel some sense of accomplishment. And neither of us can pull the “But I’ve done all the work!” card in an argument. It’s a nice little system we have going.

What does your division of wedding labor look like?

haha if I had left things up to Mr BC, the ENTIRE wedding would have been planned when we arrived in Portland. A week before the wedding.
you’re very lucky Mr. Pchips is so good about helping :)

Ah.. you remind me of me and Mr. Root. I vaguely mention ideas of things I think I would like, and FI takes those ideas, calls people up and books things for us. This is how we got our venue, band, and honeymoon booked.
If it were up to me, nothing would ever get done. Ever. I had one small task this week, that was to print our labels for the STDs. I still haven’t even gotten all our addresses yet.
Bride = fail. :(

My fiance and I have pretty much split things equally. He’s been just as gun-hoe on getting things accomplished as I have (if not more). We’re 17 months out and have far more done than probably necessary. Not a bad thing I guess!

Haha… what a great mom you have! It’s like a free wedding planner :) But I’m the control freak and the Mister helps.

he helps me decide on things when I’m feeling really torn. (usually it’s to pick the cheaper option, hmmm…)

but seriously, he doesn’t care about a lot of the details, so although we chose our venue and menu together, he’s been taking care of the music and planning the events of the reception while I’ve been dealing with all the nitty gritty tasks of organizing centrepieces and doing the program layout.

Mr Trail Mix’s participation so far has extended to picking out the ties for the groomsmen.

Yeah, I’m a total control freak :)

We’re the opposite. I’m the taskmaster / logistical thing-doer, and he has an idea of the “aesthetic” he wants (granted, not flowery or formal, but my idea of wedding colors are red and white wine, so he wins). The problem is that he’s super busy the next few months with school, so I am flailing over what tasks to do.

It’s pretty much all me, but if a vendor is unresponsive or I think the task is boring (like booking sound equipment), I let him do it.

hmm…actually I think we pretty much split it. Although I told Mr. Breezy that he was totally in charge of Catering. With one large task like that he dove in and did the research and contacted people and came back to me just to help pick out the actual food. He did a great job! Everything else is me. My parents are helping by splitting the cost of the deposits with us. :)

I’m also jealous that he’ll call and follow up. My guy is far too shy.

@Miss Sewing @mimi06d: I HATE making phone calls. I’m glad he steps up!
@Miss Pug: I can start farming him out. Send him a to-do list.

Mr Snow handles all paper (invites, escort cards, napkins, etc., etc.), man clothing, all final aesthetic decisions, wedding sanity interventions (”Why are you upset about napkin rings?”) , and the budget.

I make phone calls, crazily brainstorm about aesthetic decisions, and attempt to justify not counting things in our budget (”I’ll use this craft stuff again so it doesn’t count!”).

We are a good team.

… boys do stuff? Shoot. I do… everything… and Mr. KM stresses out. I don’t even know what he’s stressing out about! I’ve asked him to come to exactly 1 meeting…

I’m doing the bulk of it (but it helps that I’m unemployed at the moment so that helps) but FH is good with getting the paper products done.

I research, contact the vendors, keep all the information in the binder. And FH deals with me when I have my mini break downs :-)
