Mrs. Spaniel's Picture
Mrs. Spaniel, Los Angeles Age and Occupation: 28, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Psychologist Wedding Date: March 2010 Venue: Calamigos Ranch About Me: I'm a third-year law student trying to balance graduating with starting my career, keeping up a relationship, and, oh yeah, planning an Old World, multi-cultural, "mountain lodge" wedding for 180 guests! A South Asian Jewish girl getting ready to marry my handsome Catholic Dane, I'm hoping to blend our cultures in our wedding just a bit more gently than by providing samosas as appetizers and offering æbleskiver for dessert. (Although that would also be awesome.)
About Mrs. Spaniel

I’m Putting a Ring on It

February 3rd, 2010 @ 6:50 pm by Mrs. Spaniel

I don’t think I’ve told you yet about Mr. Spaniel’s wedding ring, so gather ’round; it’s story time!

Once upon a time, Mr. Spaniel was reluctant to go shopping for a wedding band. He’d gotten the idea somewhere that the only acceptable men’s ring is a plain white band.

While I really like the simple, modern but also classic style of a platinum or white gold wedding band, it didn’t strike me as being particularly Mr. Spaniel—which he confirmed by his lack of enthusiasm for it. Instead, I figured I knew Mr. Spaniel better than he knew himself, and dragged him along to another jewelry shop to get him to try on rings. I had a feeling that if we found the right one, he’d get excited about the prospect of wearing it, and doesn’t everyone want their partner to be happy wearing their ring? I also had a feeling that the right ring would be two-toned.

As it turns out, we were both wrong! A plain platinum band actually never touched his finger (he had no interest at all once he saw all the other options), and he seemed to gravitate toward more “interesting” and complicated designs all on his own. But he didn’t go two-tone…

He threw some rose gold in there too and went three-tone.

That Mr. Spaniel. Such a diva.

Did your FI have any preconceived notions about the wedding band? Did the choice surprise you?

Oooh does his ring have a woven appearance? I like that! My FI is drawn to tungsten carbide, as I had a feeling he would!

@Blueshoes2: Yes! It is actually hand-braided. :) I promise I’ll have a better picture after the wedding, when the pro takes it. ;)

Oh Miss Spaniel your FI is like mine! He is saying all he wants is a white gold band. Plane. We’ll see if he turns diva too when we go ring shopping.

I love his ring!

Oooh, fancy Mr. Spaniel! Love that ring! Mr. Chips always gravitates towards rings I think are hideous. But I guess…he’s the one wearing it, right?

LOL, J said he wanted a plain gold band. When we went shopping he decided a carat of diamonds went quite nicely with the plain gold! LOL I got one for $850 at Overstock.com. It was expensive but I wanted him to be happy!

FI almost got a two-tone, I was scared since I hate yellow gold (like everyone these days). He loved the hammered ones, but went with a brushed platinum. Hard to describe, but it looks really neat.

You know, I thought my Mr. would want something really plain, but turns out we designed something all two-toned and fancy. Who knew.

@Jackie_Drake: I suggested one with a diamond so that it matched mine, but he totally laughed me off! I guess it’s better that he got one without diamonds, though, so that he never has an excuse to take it off. ;)

@LittlestBirds: I’m warming up to yellow gold again, actually, and it definitely struck me as fitting for Mr. S since it has a kind of natural look and he’s a big tree hugger. :)

@Miss Pug: For realz, yo.

A three tone ring….who would’ve guessed?!

I thought my hubs would want a plain band also….but he ended up gravitating towards the bling! Ha! He ended up with a white gold ring with .25 carats of baguette diamonds.

My FI picked a Tungsten Carbide as well. A little scary when the jeweler tells you the ring would have to be “crushed” off in an emergency, but he was sold on the “scratch proof-ness” of the tungsten.

FI chose a beveled ring made of tungsten carbide. I was not thrilled with the choice because tungsten carbide cannot be resized, but he fell in love with color tone of the ring. It is a gorgeous charcoal with a beautiful sheen. And, as a bonus, he says, “tungsten carbide sounds like something they could have used to freeze Han Solo in.” Love him (FI… and Han Solo, too.)

I love the ring he chose! Mr. Savannah always thought he wanted a plain white gold or platinum band… but when he saw a Tacori platinum band that had all of these swirls carved into it… he had to have it! I love the band, and NEVER would have expected him to pick it… I think it is cool that he actually got excited about his ring… he even asked that night if he could wear it before the wedding! Gotta love my honey :)

OH! We looked at that exact same ring! How strange. It was a long road to that ring, though. First we had to go through the mother of pearl rings… Mr. KM is a tacky Hawaiian tourist, apparently.
