Mrs. Pencils's Picture
Mrs. Pencils, Washington DC/Frederick, MD Age and Occupation: 24, Program Director, Education Non Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Administrative Assistant, Ocean Conservation Non Profit Engagement Date: July 26, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: Morningside Inn About Me: I'm a nerdy Northwestern girl who always knew she was meant to live in the East, harboring a deep love of ice cream, underwear, Diet Coke with a splash of Coca-Cola, pashminas, scrapbooking, stationery, wall calendars and books written for preteens. I think every day should include good thin crust pizza, chocolate, an obscure historical monument, lots of laughter, a dash of wedding planning and, of course, amazing Mr. Pencils! I'm loving the adventure of planning a Maryland wedding and Rocky Mountain reception, and most of all, I just love love!

License to Wed!

February 3rd, 2010 @ 3:31 pm by Mrs. Pencils

Since Mr. Pencils and I both actually had weekdays off together, the holiday break presented a great (read: our only) opportunity to head to the courthouse to get our marriage license!

It was a cold, clear day in Frederick, Maryland. After a scrumptious lunch of Subway, Mr. P and I arrived at the county court house only to learn that our phones and camera weren’t allowed in. After Mr. Pencils ran them back to the car, we swore an oath to tell the truth, handed over our seventy five bucks in cash, and received our marriage license!

Once back outside, Mr. Pencils ran back to the car again to get our camera (love him!) and we took some shots to celebrate!

It was surprisingly easy to get our license—there was no ID required, only our social security numbers, our address and our birth places. Within ten minutes, we had the license with little fanfare. Of course, we created our own fun when we took the photos!

We also confirmed that Uncle J, ordained by the Universal Life Church, is legally able to sign our marriage certificate. We thought we might have to get married beforehand at the courthouse, but it seems it’s all good!

How did you celebrate getting your marriage license? Does anyone else think it’s strange that nothing is required other than money?

Wow - only $75?!? It’s $115 where I am. But yeah, apparently they don’t really care if you are who you say you are as long as you bring them cash money yo.

Hey! I have those tights too! Gotta love Walmart argyle…. How long is your certificate good for? We can only get ours 60 days before the wedding.

Ugh I’m not looking forward to shelling out that $75, although based on Goldilocks’s comment it could be worse. Thanks for the tip on phone/cameras though! I do like that only one person has to go to get the license in MD and that it is good for six months. Did you want to both go just for the experience of doing it together?

yay i can’t wait to apply for ours (it’s only good for 60 days here though). i can’t believe how expensive some of these licenses are! ours will only be $20, but apparently there are some towns in mass that are only $4.

I can’t wait until we can get ours. You guys aren’t getting married until May though–how long before the wedding date can you get yours? Here in Colorado we have to pickup the license and have it signed on the date within 30 days of issue. Colorado also used to only charge $10 but now it’s $30 or $35. :)

wow. goldilocks and I are from the same town. Ours are $115 and only good for thirty days, plus there is a 6 day “waiting period” which you ca forgo for an additional fee of course (which we will have to do as we are only arriving 3 days before the wedding).

Yeah I think ours are only good for 30 days too, so I’m holding off on this, but it’s getting closer…

you can get it this early? I think we had to wait until 30 or 60 days before!
In fact, I think another bee (Mrs. Perfume?) went to the courthouse and got theirs too early for their wedding date!

In Oklahoma it has to be 10 work days before the wedding which was stressful since the 10 days before included Thanksgiving and they were closed. Luckily they dismissed the requried blood test a few years ago.

These marriage license posts are some of my favorite for some reason. And I love your tights!
