My Mom: She Has Her Priorities

February 3rd, 2010 @ 12:11 pm by Mrs. Hamster

Now that I had successfully dressed the ladies, the men, and myself, it was time to move on to the most nerve-wracking test of all:

Dressing my mom.

My Mom: She Has Her Priorities : wedding dress Fam fam

My mom is notoriously good at finding outfits for me (she picked out my prom dress in 30 seconds after I had seen nothing I liked in 5 stores. Granted, she was probably tired of the whole process by then). However, she rarely, if ever, finds anything for herself. Whenever we buy sweaters or the like as Christmas presents for her, my sister and I know to staple the receipt to the sales tag. Within her exclamation of “Thanks!” is an unsaid “I will put the cash I get from returning this to good use!”

The one big priority that my mom had, and I kid you not, was that the dress should be loose enough for her to eat with abandon at my wedding.

See, she had worn the oh-so-unforgiving cheongsam for my sister’s wedding:

The Parents

I think she looked great, but for my wedding she knew what was what - Mom’s gotta eat, you know. At least I know where I get my passion for food.

This is the first dress my mom picked out. She was a big fan of the covered arms. I was not a big fan of the fact that it made her look like a grandma. Sure, she may be one, but she doesn’t have to look like one.

You can see how thrilled my mom was with this second dress. I liked the neckline and the detailing, but she wasn’t crazy about the exposed arms.

We both liked this third dress, which was actually a two piece ensemble. She looks a bit like she’s swimming in it, because they didn’t have her size. But we both agreed that the heavy taffeta might be a bit heavy and sweat-inducing in May.

I was a fan of this next gold number, which I thought was both flattering and age appropriate. Even Mom was okay with the exposed arms, although she thought that the dress was a bit too revealing (her words, not mine).

She then tried on the same dress in navy, which matches the bridesmaids’ dresses and might be a bit more flattering. She still thought it was a bit revealing though, which just makes me wonder what she thinks of the way I dress! Hmm, maybe I should stop wondering…

My Mom: She Has Her Priorities : wedding dress Mob009 MOB+009

I’m under strict orders not to divulge which dress she chose, but I think you can tell from the above context clues which ones are contenders. Which one(s) do you like?

And by the way, major bonus points to my mom for finding a dress in one shopping trip! More than I can say for myself…

How was your mother-of-the-bride dress shopping? Did you and your mom have the same tastes when it came to MOB dresses?

The last 2 look great! Gotta give her props for her speedy shopping.

My mom found hers even before I found my dress. My FMIL is still looking for her right dress.

Ooh, I think your mom looks great in the gold dress!! Love it, and think it would be great with the Navy BM dresses. This weekend I actually sat down with my mom for almost 2 hours and browsed through options online!! All we did was come to a conclusion on what colors NOT to wear, though, ha!

One the of the pangs of planning a long distance wedding has been not being able to help my mom pick out her outfit. So glad for you that you got to be there - and that it turned out to be painless in the end.

Your mom is so cute! and she looks great in so many of them. Did she know you were posting pics? My mom would kill me! But we did find her dress in one trip too, thankfully! Even showing some arms too, which she was against at first

your mom is so pretty! I like the gold one the best, the neckline reminds me of beauty and the beast, hehe.

The smile in the navy is great! I think she looks fantastic in the second one and the gold version, though.

I like the second one and the last one, but I’m guessing she didn’t choose #2, based on her expression in that picture! Your mom is so cute.

I also like the last two dresses. Being long distance means I probably won’t get to shop in person with my mom, but we browse online together!

I like the second one a lot! I’m assuming she didn’t choose that one though, lol!

Love the last one (and Mama H’s smile)! My mom was a total fox at my wedding. We both wore white and I loved it! Heehee.

My MOB shopping involved a lot of internet searching and only one shopping trip thankfully. although our heads were sore from butting against each other - our tastes are as different as can be, but she’s got an awesome purple beaded dress that looks fantastic on her.
Love both the navy and the gold dress, although i think the gold is more flattering!

Um first, I love YOUR dress in that first photo! I’ve been looking for the perfect dress for my bridal shower. If you don’t mind me asking, where did you get it?

For your mom, I like the second one. But my mom is just like yours. She doesn’t want to wear sleeveless. My mom wore something similar to the purple one your mom is in (but gray) to my sisters wedding and it aged her sooo much! I think it was the color.

I am fairly confident dress #2 is MIL’s dress for our wedding. :)
