Now that I had successfully dressed the ladies, the men, and myself, it was time to move on to the most nerve-wracking test of all:
Dressing my mom.
My mom is notoriously good at finding outfits for me (she picked out my prom dress in 30 seconds after I had seen nothing I liked in 5 stores. Granted, she was probably tired of the whole process by then). However, she rarely, if ever, finds anything for herself. Whenever we buy sweaters or the like as Christmas presents for her, my sister and I know to staple the receipt to the sales tag. Within her exclamation of “Thanks!” is an unsaid “I will put the cash I get from returning this to good use!”
The one big priority that my mom had, and I kid you not, was that the dress should be loose enough for her to eat with abandon at my wedding.
See, she had worn the oh-so-unforgiving cheongsam for my sister’s wedding:
The Parents
I think she looked great, but for my wedding she knew what was what - Mom’s gotta eat, you know. At least I know where I get my passion for food.
This is the first dress my mom picked out. She was a big fan of the covered arms. I was not a big fan of the fact that it made her look like a grandma. Sure, she may be one, but she doesn’t have to look like one.
You can see how thrilled my mom was with this second dress. I liked the neckline and the detailing, but she wasn’t crazy about the exposed arms.
We both liked this third dress, which was actually a two piece ensemble. She looks a bit like she’s swimming in it, because they didn’t have her size. But we both agreed that the heavy taffeta might be a bit heavy and sweat-inducing in May.
I was a fan of this next gold number, which I thought was both flattering and age appropriate. Even Mom was okay with the exposed arms, although she thought that the dress was a bit too revealing (her words, not mine).
She then tried on the same dress in navy, which matches the bridesmaids’ dresses and might be a bit more flattering. She still thought it was a bit revealing though, which just makes me wonder what she thinks of the way I dress! Hmm, maybe I should stop wondering…
I’m under strict orders not to divulge which dress she chose, but I think you can tell from the above context clues which ones are contenders. Which one(s) do you like?
And by the way, major bonus points to my mom for finding a dress in one shopping trip! More than I can say for myself…
How was your mother-of-the-bride dress shopping? Did you and your mom have the same tastes when it came to MOB dresses?
