I'm planning a half-destination wedding on the beautiful island of Oahu - imagine a plethora of movies, art and games; savory Hawaiian food; blended Chinese and Japanese cultural details; lush, fragrant tropical flowers and all the air conditioning a NorCal native could want! And once I marry the love of my life, we'll come back to the 'mainland' to party it up all over again in my hometown of Salinas, the salad-bowl capital of the world!

Paper Parade

February 3rd, 2010 @ 1:40 pm by Mrs. Sewing

So remember that embossing paper debate?

Paper Parade : wedding crafts stationery Cuttleb

We ended up buying a Cuttlebug! Hooray! (Okay, yeah we eventually did get the heat embossing things too, but that’ll be for another time…)

We got it on sale at Michaels for 40% off… huzzah! But there was one little problem. I didn’t like any of the embossing folders they had at the store! And none of Provo Craft’s current line really worked with our theme.

So I ordered an embossing folder from a different company, Sizzix. To be specific, a Sizzix folder made exclusively for Stampin’ Up.

Here’s what we’re going to do:

Paper Parade : wedding crafts stationery Emboss

First, I cut a sheet of linen paper down to an A2 paper size.

Then, I stuck the paper into the embossing folder!

Stick the embossing folder between the two plexiglass plates, and roll it through the Cuttlebug!

Pop the folder out of the other side, and open it up for some sweet relief!

Yeahhh, that’s what I’m talking about!

Pretty awesome!

Anyway, this will serve as one of the building blocks for the invitation. Much of it is still very conceptual, but it’ll look something like the scribbled-ideas below:

Did you have an overall design in mind for your invites? Or did you use the “build-as-you-go” method?

wow those are going to come out amazing! I am feeling particularly un-creative since I will be totally paying someone to make me invitations - no other DIY type post ever made me really want to DIY til this one!

That looks awesome. You should probably print on the paper first though before you emboss it. I had no idea sizzix made the same embossing plates that you could use in the cuttlebug. I knew sizzix’s diecuts were compatible, but not the embossing folders. I’ll totally have to check them out now. I don’t like cuttlebug’s designs that much, even though I have a ton of them. They are too cutesy. Your invites will look awesome!

You’re too cute. I love how you sketched it out on paper. I think I had an overall design in mind, which is why it took forever to get started. I wanted everything finalized conceptually… but of course it evolved over time. Can’t wait to see your invitation suite!

@amariem25: good point about printing first! hehe. it would suck to jam your printer with raised paper!
@mander411: at least you know for a fact that it will come out well when you go pro! There’s a lot of risk involved with DIY!
@Mrs. Piglet: so true, it’s nice to have a grand-master-plan ahead of time! and to remember to allow for changes..that’s the hardest part for me!

those look amazing! We totally had a grand master plan when we were figuring out our invites. It helped so much during the process knowing that we had the same vision in mind.

The embossed paper looks very pretty! I am definitely more figure-it-out-as-you-go, which worries me sometimes because I know I have the potential to just end up with a completely mismatched final product, and that goes for the entire wedding decor too. :) It seemed to work out alright for the STDs though.

I love my cuttlebug. I bought it with wedding invites in mind, but didn’t end up using it because I found textured paper that I didn’t want to mess with. I still found use for it and I love using it to make cards. I just bought a sizzix folder for mine, but haven’t tried it yet. I love the results you got with yours!

wow! thank you for this post. . .
Unfortunately for budget purposes, we are non investing a lot on our invites, but I still want them to be beautiful!
This might be my solution and I’ll surely keep it in mind :)
