A Lesson in Being an Awkward Bride

February 4th, 2010 @ 9:16 am by Mrs. Pencils

Or: how to embarrass your fiance and his best man while they look at tux options

This weekend, Mr. Pencils’ best man A was home from law school and they took advantage of the opportunity to scout some tuxes for their bods. Funnily enough, these guys have been discussing and planning this little outing for a month now. It’s so interesting to watch these guys take all this wedding stuff so seriously—I love it (and them!).

Not so funnily enough, there are only two places that rent suits in the greater DC/MD area. And, being guys, they did put off scheduling the actual day and time for the tux trip, so we ended up going on Sunday, which meant that one of the two tux shops was closed (for Sunday) so we ventured out to one. Luckily, Mr. Pencils liked what this place turned up!

To set the scene, imagine the look Mr. P and I both had settled upon for the gents:

or:

Though, I happen to think Mr. P is handsomer than stinky ol’ Brad Pitt. :)

These options are to be paired with this tie for the groom’s people:

and this one for Mr. Pencils:

With these handy dandy mental images, we trekked to our local Men’s Wearhouse. This is where the fun embarrassment of Mr. Pencils and Best Man A began. They humored me with photos as they perused the many options of jackets and vests:

Men’s Wearhouse only had one brown tux and no khaki suit… it seems that most general tux rental stores don’t really carry khaki suits. Being the tux novices we are, we had no clue. Oh well! The brown tux looked hot!

He gave me his cheesiest smile and then his dashing self:

We tried to see what the jacket would look like with a green tie. They only had striped ones, so we grabbed the one that seemed most similar to what we’d want. It didn’t show up very well in photos, but here ya go!

They yellow groomsman’s tie looks wicked awesome, though!

See how much they love me? They even did the “jacket put on” photo again just for me, including ridic smiles!

And they even posed patiently, and dorkily, for me as I snapped every.little.thing:

Mr. Pencils has really taken the reins on these attire options—he asks me for my opinion and we usually do decide together, but overall, he has the final say. It seems fair given that this is exactly how we chose my wedding dress—only then, I had the final say!

Did your fiance choose his wedding clothes? What will he be wearing?

We are doing brown tux’s also.

I didn’t think brides were ‘allowed’ to go when they picked the tux’s out. At least that’s what they told me ;)

I thought it was funny how my jeans and t-shirt wearing hubby was SOOO opinionated about what his suit/tux options were.

I reallly like the brown suit look - and that green tie!!

Best Man A has a Mac & Bob’s t-shirt on, which is right across the street from my alma mater, Roanoke College!! Love Mac & Bob’s :) glad tux shopping went well. We have yet to discuss tux options…

There is no WAY my FH would have gone tux shopping if I hadn’t scheduled the appointment and driven him there myself. Not that he wasn’t excited when he got there, but he just doesn’t think about these things. However, once we arrived and he found out that he was allowed to wear a white vest and a white tie, he was totally on board. We’re going pretty traditional–black tuxes and the guys will be in chocolate brown vests and ties. Once MW found out one of our colors was chocolate, they brought up the chocolate tuxes, but by that point FI was so enamored of his image of himself in a black tux and white on white accessories that there was not even a discussion of the subject. :P I totally get it, he looks great. But I have to say, I think the brown tuxes are AWESOME.

@Headuh: haha, that’s funny! I think Mr. P was glad to have me around to help (that’s what I tell myself) :)

I echo your frustration that the major tux retailers don’t tend to carry khaki suits/tuxes. For my summer, wedding, that’s what my FI was really set on…we did find one in the Destination Collection from Jim’s Formal Wear, if anybody is interested…here’s a link:

Its not as tailored as I would have liked, but FI is excited about it, so as a result, so am I =)

Oh yeah, that sounds like me. I’ve been taking photos of EVERYTHING wedding related lately. Luckily, FI doesn’t complain too much! :-)

Even though I didn’t go, I sent him with a whole notebook page full of info. (our colors, my dress is Ivory…)

You mean the groom is allowed to select his own outfit?!? That’s not exactly the way we did it :-)

If I didn’t do anything, we’d be getting married in a back alley (and now I am starting to wonder if perhaps we shouldn’t). No, I’ve already picked out what will be worn, and he’s okay with having one less thing on his already small list of things to do. *insert frustrating smiley here*

So this isn’t really related to the suits, and this is going to seem weird, but I either Best Man A attended the same small college I did or he frequented bar-of-choice, Mac & Bob’s! Sorry, but that was a delightfully random discovery while reading about your tuxedo search. Also, bravo on the brown tuxes! Very nice.
