Cake Fiending

The first and only tasting we did for the reception was the cake. I’m not really that into meals, but I’m very enthusiastic about dessert, particularly cakes.

When the caterer called to ask what I wanted to taste, all I said was white buttercream frosting. Fondant might look real slick, but it tastes like ehhh. Other than that, I had no clue.

When we arrived there were two mini cakes waiting for us: a chocolate cake with fudge filling and white buttercream frosting and a vanilla creme with almond filling and cream cheese frosting.

This was in my pre-blogging days so I didn’t take any pictures. But the vanilla creme was ah-mazing. It wasn’t soggy, but it was moist. The frosting had that nice cream cheese bite, which is divine. We were in love with a cake flavor.

Since deciding on the flavor, I haven’t had tremendous luck finding a cake design. I knew I wanted it to be round and fairly simple, maybe a little home made-looking. But since we’re only going to have about 50 guests, an extravagant multi-tiered cake was just out of the question.

So I started to think about texture. Swirly frosting perhaps? Topped with my sad in-progress cake topper (to be revealed someday)?

Buttercream! It tastes great and it’s cheaper. Sounds like a win-win to me!

I”m definitely on the buttercream side! If for no other reason than the way Buddy from Cake Boss says “fondant” (and I”m not crazy about the taste!)!

I can’t wait for tastings… nom. I might pretend to be more indecisive so we get to try more cake. Sneaky, sneaky.

I actually like the look of real icing better than fondant. I’m weird. :)

Buttercream - hands down! FI is pretty much “in charge” of the cake and HATES fondant.

Buttercream by a landslide! Actually, “Bettercream” is a favorite from my cake-making days at TCBY. So fluffy and delicious~

We originally wanted buttercream, but decided on fondant bc we want that really perfected look and we want to incorporate ribbon. When FH and I were discussing the dilemna with my dad, he said that in his experience, we should want the cake to LOOK really good bc people won’t remember/care how it tastes. Lots of people might not even end up eating any.

Buttercream! It’s so delicious, I could put it on a spoon and eat it by itself!

I like the fluffy/uneven look of the buttercream on that second photo. I’d go for something like that!

I’m the Fondant and Buttercream side!!
I’m a Sugar Artist in kingston and a lot of my couples don’t realize when you order a fondant cake there is buttercream icing underneath for you to enjoy. You get the best of both worlds!!
As for the taste of Fondant. Check around to other bakers, some fondant tastes yucky but others taste very yummy. I strive for a good tasting fondant and so mine tastes like Oreo Filling!!

I had a buttercream cake and it looked and tasted great. My flavors were

chocolate/buttercream filling
carrot cake/buttercream filling
lemon/rasberry filling
orange/pineapple swirl/buttercream filling

The three I tried were delish and my dad a lemon lover said the lemon was great.

That first cake is gorgeous!! As for buttercream v. fondant, I’m all about the buttercream.

i’m on the buttercream design, but our baker really wants us to do fondant because she has to travel about 90 miles to get to us, and she thinks the fondant will hold up better. if that’s the case, we’ll just have the staff strip off the fondant (apparently it can be done easily and with little damage to the underlying frosting) and serve it sans fondant.

Buttercream, all the way! I’ve never met a fondant I liked, although it does look gorgeous.

Buttercream- no contest! I can’t stand fondant! It’s a total waste of money- can’t eat it, and it peels off some of the delicious buttercream!

I’d love to have buttercream, but our wedding is outside and it may be hot that day. So I think we’ll be going fondant — if we do a cake at all.

I love sugar. For me the best is buttercream. Fondant is mainly for looks the designs are sleeker n withstand rougher conditions. The taste though n my opinion is 2 sweet. There are pros n cons to both.
