Mrs. Hamster's Picture
Mrs. Hamster, New York City Age and Occupation: 28, Finance Gal Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Finance Guy Engagement Date: March 9, 2009 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: The Pierre Hotel About Me: I'm an original Jersey girl living it up in the big NYC! I love baking for others, hosting brunches, and exploring NYC with my mans. Besides Mr. Hamster (of course), I'm attracted to shiny things, bold colors, snacks, matching and coordination, pork and duck fats, miniature versions of things, corny jokes and puns. We are planning a swanky Spring wedding in the heart of NYC, followed by a second reception in Singapore. From one city that never sleeps to another - I can't imagine a more exciting ride!
About Mrs. Hamster

A while back, I had written about the possible reception surprises I was considering for Mr. Hammy at the reception. I was pretty sure I’d go with the cigar roller, but some readers brought up good points about possible smoke sensitivity as well as losing guests to the outside.

I was also considering a durian groom’s cake, but I knew that the Mister would really appreciate a durian flavored cake that also looked like a durian. Easy peasy, right? Apparently not - I did find some bakeries in Chinatown that made durian pastries. I also found some bakeries that could make a durian shaped cake. However, one that made a cake that both tasted AND looked like a durian? Surprisingly scarce.

Back to the drawing board. I was about to abandon the surprise idea - after all… um, he didn’t know about it in the first place. Easy cop-out, right? That’s when I saw this in my building lobby:

The Surprise That Was... Then Wasn't : wedding food Bonchon1 bonchon

Yep, BonChon Chicken! For the uninitiated, BonChon is amazing, amazing fried chicken. Originating in Korea, BonChon made its way to the States a few years ago and has developed a cult following ever since. The twice-fried chicken is flavorful, crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The boxes of chicken in our building lobby was to celebrate the grand opening of a new BonChon across the street - which the Mister had been monitoring ever since the signboard went up -

4 weeks ago: Hey look, a BonChon!

3 weeks ago: Hey, I think they’re opening soon!

2 weeks ago: They really should be opening soon…

1 week ago: They really should be open by now…

3 days ago: Why aren’t the open yet? Maybe I should see if they need help.

Yeah, if they needed help eating the chicken, the Mister would be all over that.

The chicken comes in multiple pieces to a box, but the samples sizes they had were awesome - a single drumstick in an individual tiny box. Wouldn’t these would be perfect for a post-wedding dinner snack? My next step is to give BonChon a call to see if they’d be willing to deliver some 200 pieces of chicken (they’re small pieces) to our venue. Fingers crossed!

What do you think of this surprise?

Lol at “Maybe I should see if they need help.” That is something my FI would say, with a delighted look on his face at his own usefulness.

Great idea, and so cool that you want to surprise him with something at the reception, you are really sweet.

Oh, and on the subject of Durian: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUm0kssk_V4

Having BonChon at your reception will be amazing! They just opened in our neighborhood too and I am going to see if we can get some for our Superbowl party this weekend.

That sounds delicious! And about the durian cake - I had no idea it comes in cake form… I’m a little afraid! Heehee!

@LittlestBirds: Haha! That video is hilarious! I’m actually surprised he took to it so quickly!

@Mrs. Lovebird: Sadly, the platter of Bonchon was a one-time event to promote the grand opening, so it was first come, first served. If it were an everyday occurrence, the Mister would never want to move from this building!

Guess were Mr. Hammy is right now - I kid you not - he’s across the street picking up some Bonchon.
