Death to Chignons

February 5th, 2010 @ 8:49 am by Mrs. Ribbons

My current wedding hair muse is Zooey Deschanel, and it’s all in her bangs.

I’ve had the blunt bangs off and on since 2003. Currently I’m in an off stage — my last haircut was in my parents’ town and the girl just didn’t quite understand my directions, so I pinned my bangs to the side out of spite. Now they’re way too long and silly.

But still. Mostly six years with bangs. My ideal was always, from the beginning, to have stick straight long hair with the blunt bangs, like GaGa, who clearly stole it from me. Unfortunately my hair has a natural wave and I didn’t have the tenacity to fully grow my hair out past my shoulders, so I never really made it past, oh, mousy.

Yet here I am - hair definitely past my shoulders and four-ish months (OMG) till the wedding. I had a nightmare the other night that I cut it all off into a bob and I woke up in a sweat. The cat was also on my head. It was some sort of unintelligible sign: Keep thy hair.

So, Zooey and her bangs. I love her little Boho updos. Every other Hollywood starlet does the side-sweep bang/no bang option and it is just universally flattering. There is also something very youthful, classic, and ballet-tastic about off the face hair. And still, it conflicts me. I like my history with bangs. I kind of like that it would date me. I’m very much a product of the eighties (can you honestly believe the decade is over? we’re so old) and thus inclined to embrace the bangs that took me everywhere.

From the beginning I’ve wanted to look like me on the wedding day. I’m tired of being told to look “classic”. My big ole bangs are my classic standby.

Toodles, off the face chignons!

Are you attempting classic hair for your wedding, or are you doing classic you?

I went for classic hair, because if I had stuck with classic me I would have sweaty bangs stuck to my face. no bueno. The humidity of MD is just too much for my hair to handle! So i went the “me, but better” route to avoid a hot sticky mess on my forehead. Stupid August weather….

I just learned that in french (& in chile too) they call a bun/chignon “une tomate”! :)
I say keep your bangs! keep your hair! date yourself! You’ll want to look back on your wedding day pictures and say, “oh, how sweet I looked back then, that was totally ME” :)

Go for the bangs! So different and pretty. I’m doing half up, half down, and a little messy, which is very me. I always do my hair like that, and I’m decidedly anti-updo.

I have been growing out my bangs for a few months now, thinking I wanted something more classic for the wedding. Not chignon classic, but I’m just afraid, as you said, that the hipster bangs are just to trendy. Which is kind of silly since theres tons of trendy stuff in my wedding and obviously most weddings look dated when you look back on them.

Some mornings I wake up sure I’m going to chop my hair and bring back the bangs. I can’t wait until I get back from my honeymoon and into the hair salon. For now, I’m sticking to the grow-out plan.

PS - I heart Zooey.

I miss my bangs!! In a moment of laziness I asked the mister if I should grow out my bangs or cut them again–he said grow them out bc he hadn’t seen me without them in years! Bad move. Ps–I love the last two pics. gorgeous!

I love Zooey! She is so cute, and her style is adorable. Sadly, I cannot pull off bangs due to oily skin/fine wimpy hair/and a cow lick that parts them funky. But kudos to you!

I gave my hairdresser a picture of Zooey and her fun banged updos for my wedding hair! I loved the way it came out, and I loved the way I felt!

I did 100% me, same as day-to-day work style, for the wedding. I’ve just seen too many brides be darn near unrecognizable for their weddings, and I didn’t want that to be me. I might have gone a little extreme in the opposite direction, sure, but…I don’t know, I really was just keepin’ it real, you know?

I’m struggling with the same- grew my bangs out since May but prefer the way bangs look… so torn!

I say go with bangs- you want to feel so YOU on your day. I’m pretty sure I’m cutting mine again!

“Ballet-tastic.” Heh.

My hair has just reached my shoulders. I am very proud. I do, however, miss my bangs and will be happy to see them again post-wedding.

I LOVE bangs, I really just don’t have the patience to keep them up - they are very high maintenance!

I miss my blunt bangs from high school *sigh*
For my wedding I did a ‘Classic Me’ and just did my hair the same way I do everyday just really really well, you know?
P.S. I love me some Zooey!

That’s awesome, Zoey Deschanel is totally my hair inspiration, too! I saw the Happening (horrible movie), but Zoey’s hair in it was the saving grace of the film, haha.
I’d love to see you with bangs–I bet the look is great on you.

I have similar looking bangs and I usually grow them out during the summer (naturally curly hair, even when straightened and doused in anti-frizz products, will still curl in the sweltering summer humidity of southern Ontario). I was considering growing them out longer than usual so I could go with a classic look but my forehead always looks so huge without bangs.

Since my wedding is in October, humidity shouldn’t be an issue (unless it’s of the rain/snow variety - god forbid!), and I’m with you on wanting to look like myself - minimal makeup, simple hair. I love the last two pictures you posted! I’ll be saving those to show to my hairstylist when I go in for a trial.

I’ve done the side swept bangs for a long time and I’ll cut them shorter, love them for a week, then grow them back out cause they get annoying. I’m thinking about cutting them again cause I really love they way they look. I say go for it, I’m envious of anyone that can pull off the blunt bangs.

i love bangs! i don’t think i could carry them off because my hair’s a bit *too* straight and i think you need a wee bit of volume and wave–i think they would look great on you!

I’ve been rocking bangs for a year now, and when I first cut them, it was blunt-cut and Gaga-tastic! LOL! I’m a blonde, after all! Then, I changed to point-cut bangs and I love them! Who knows if I’ll still have them when I get married! So, I say, do whatever makes you feel gorgeous!
