About Mrs. Pencils

What You Need To Know Before You Buy a Wedding Planning Guide : wedding resources Dosdont dosdont

Planning on spending some time this weekend getting organized around wedding things? Great! Before you head off though, take some advice from a girly who learned the hard way… and Mr. Pencils, who says someone better get some good out of the damn things we’ve learned.

First of all, DON’T take 2 hours on a Saturday afternoon to look through every wedding planning book that Barnes and Noble has… you’ll give your groom good reason to question your sanity…

DO at least look through some wedding organizer books because they give fantastic tips and help you think of things you may have forgotten!

DON’T buy an organizer/planning book until you are absolutely sure it meets all of your needs…

DO acquire something that will allow you to jot down inspiration, notes, your budget, tips and vendors information, even if it is a simple notebook!

DON’T buy an organizer just because of a famous name on the cover or its color…

DO buy an organizer that has ample space for you to take notes during meetings with potential vendors and has space for drafting that initial guest list!

And the last one, from personal experience:

DON’T buy a large oversized organizer if you plan on carrying it around with you (like on a full day of venue walk-throughs)

Some of these may seem like no-brainers, but trust me, it’s easy to get caught up in a snazzy looking giant green organizer… and then kick yourself later for blowing fifty bucks on the fifty pound binder (which I did)!

So, I will share with you the fruits of my two hour labor in the bookstore:

While useful, I felt that much of what was written here I could find at the website. Overall, a good option, but it didn’t have anything that jumped out at me likem “yes!”

This was a strong contender. It had lots of pages for notes with vendors and good photos for inspiration. It was too… pink for me. This is funny considering what I did end up going with…

This guide was witty and creative. However, though it said “anti-bride” I found it to be pretty similar to the other organizers. It did offer creative ideas for venues and attire… but beside that, it was (to me) another pink wedding planning book.

Ah, the one I chose. Yep, it’s purple. Yep, it’s huge. Yep, it has a three hole punch included so you can put your vendor contracts and notes RIGHT IN THE BINDER! Sweet! I do like it for these reasons, as well as the detailed photos of so many flowers, so that now I know the difference between a ranuncula and a dahlia… don’t hate, we grow sagebrush in Idaho…

OK, this isn’t a planning binder. But it’s the best possible ceremony planner around, since Mr. P and I are designing our own ceremony. It has so many useful examples of vows, opening prayers, and ring ceremonies. It had exactly what we needed!

I loved this book, as it offered some fresh perspective on the wedding industry on a down to earth budget. She’s a great writer with an engaging voice, and I found myself referencing her ideas as I began to plan. Side note: she finds a white bridesmaid’s dress in a NY boutique for her wedding dress—glorious.

A simple, straightforward “solutions oriented” book that offers tips and thoughts on making your wedding as socially and ecologically conscious as possible. It offered great insight into ways to downsize the carbon footprint of your wedding, and I still reference it now!

In spirit of complete honesty, I use the purple planner about never… not nearly as often as the simple leather notebook Mr. Pencils bought me. This is small enough to be carried around, so it has been my go to for our venue hunt, accommodations adventure, and food tasting endeavors. So, if your budget or sanity inhibits a large book, just get a notebook. It works wonders for your recall of all the amazing things you have seen, tasted, or thought!

Somehow, I hope this winding break down of some organization books helps you… and allows you to spend only one hour, instead of two, thus saving you those looks from your fiance that seem to say, “Am I sure I want this woman’s indecisiveness passed to my children?”

Did you choose to buy a wedding organizer? Has it been useful? If not, how are you keeping track of thoughts and notes?

I didn’t buy a wedding notebook thingy. I have a binder with images I clipped early on, but they don’t really reflect my current design ideas. I mostly stay organized with various gmail folders and an inspiration folder on my computer.
Some of those books look worth flipping through, however. I bought one etiquette book and it hasn’t been that helpful, boo.

Ooh! That’s the planner I got, and I loved Wedding Chic (even more so because my little brother bought it for me - cute!). Happy planning!

I’m a huge fan of my Real Simple wedding planner. I bought last year’s version, but the 2010 gives you a free subscription to Real Simple Magazine. It’s about 60 pages long, so you can carry it around easily, and I love the uncluttered layout and helpful pictures.

I’m just using the same pink mead spiral notebook I used my last semester of college. I had an ample amount of paper left in it, so it was out with the old college notes & in with the wedding planning ones!

I have the Emily Post Wedding planner and I also have a notebook like Miss Ribbons. The notebook is where I’m keeping the pics to show various vendors what I’m looking for, etc. I just got a really pretty tote from TJ Maxx (love that store) that I’ll keep my books in so they don’t fall around the car and I can keep my stuff organized day in and day out.

I do have to admit, I’m going to go check out these other ones that you’ve suggested this weekend. =)

For an organizer, I use Wedding Wire (online). I hate to write everything done just to type it up again (like a guest list, etc).

I did buy a book, Mindy Weiss’ “The Wedding Book: The Big Book for Your Big Day”. I first took out multiple books from my local library and realized that this book was great. It offers practical advice.

What I like most about the book are the questions to ask vendors — I actually tore them out and took them with me when I visited people. One of the questions helped me save over $800 with my photographer!

I bought the Anti-bride one– like all the spaces it had to take notes and such– also like the “real world” tips. I do however use my trusty notebook for day to day things– and generally put the “set in stone” items in the planning book.

I track most of my info with an absurdly high number of google documents. I like that I can access them from everywhere as well as collaborate with other people. And, free!

I also spent $5 on an accordion file from Walmart. If I do have papers that need to be filed, I stash them in there, and it’s light enough to be carried to vendor meetings.

Now if I could only find a way to organize all of the wedding crap that is taking over our dining room table…

That is so neat! I suppose I didn’t realize that they had these books out there. I just have a folder on my desktop computer that contains lots of lists (in word documents) budget and guest lists (in excel) and inspirational pictures (categorized by flowers, cakes, hairstyles, etc.).

Whenever I’ve gone out I’ve brought whatever notebook I happened to have… this seems much better! Glad to hear it’s working for you!

I had the same problem with those smaller binders too! I ended up DIYing my binder and it’s waaay more effective.

The Judith Johnson book about writing your own wedding ceremony is one of my favorite resources - I think it’s really great if you’re unsure of where to start, and offers lots of options as well. If you are writing your own ceremony, don’t be afraid to go outside of her outline and her suggestions, too - but she’s a great resource.

I don’t have a binder, bought or otherwise! I have an accordion folder, though, with a pocket for each major concept (dress, flowers, stationary, etc…)

I picked up a binder & dividers at Walmart, works great and didn’t cost much!
