Bustle With Some Muscle

February 8th, 2010 @ 4:54 pm by Mrs. Sewing

Every train needs a caboose. My train will sit on my caboose. Let’s talk bustles!

Us trained-women know that we need a bustle to turn our carpet-sweeping drapery into a manageable second-rump. Okay, maybe not quite a second rump; the focal point of all the extra fabric doesn’t have to be one’s rear.

There’s the American/Over bustle - pull the train up, and pin. You can pin at one point or many, depending on your personal taste.

There’s the French/Under bustle - pull the train under, and pin. Again, you can do this in as many places as you’d like.

And then there’s this beauty - no pulling or pinning involved. Just strap the wire cage around your waist and lay your dress on top!

Now, my dress has pickups all over it - which is already sort of a French bustle. So I’ll just add more of those to get the train off the floor.

Let’s try, shall we?

First, Mr. Sewing helps me figure out where all the points will be, sampling them with safety pins.

Now let’s try it on and see what it looks like…

Okay, so it’s not the best looking bustle ever, but it’ll do for learning purposes.

Time to sew on the ribbons! (they go underneath..for a more detailed explanation, try this tutorial.

All finished; time to tie those ribbons together…

I’m planning on using an American bustle. My dress is very simple with just swarovski crystal buttons going all down the back, I’m afraid a french bustle would detract from it. Are there a certain number of points you recommend? I’m afraid 1 won’t be sturdy enough.

I think I’ll be using the American bustle - my dress would look funny with the French style.

my bustle was sort of a modified american bustle. My dress had a lace overlay. So she bustled up the bottom satin part first into one pickup. Then she pulled the lace part up separately into three over bustles. It looked really pretty to have the lace separated from the satin. The lace really stood out more then.

I’m adding more pickups…that baby is thirteen points! It looks like someone threw whipped cream on my hem…

Mine has a couple of pickups, so I think I’ll be doing French as well! But I’m hoping not to have too many points to it…I like a simple bustle!!!

None! My dress is short, figuring out a bustle for a long dress just looked like too much work to me.

I love what you guys are doing with your dress- it looks fantastic!

My bustle was different and threw the seamstress for a loop. I wanted my dress to look like it didnt have a train. So my bustle had 7 or 8 points that had the dress lying flat and looking like it was just a dress. I had guests come up and ask if my train was detachable!

No bustle for me, I had my first fitting last Saturday and asked for my train to be removed all together. I think bustles can look great, but at every.single.wedding. I’ve ever been to, the bustle has started coming down at the end of the night, seriously, I’ve never seen one hold all night, so I’m taking no chances - off with the train!

I LOVE the way my dress looks with a French bustle, I’m looking forward to the mini-transformation before the reception as a new burst of excitement after I’ve gotten used to having the dress on. :) Yours is a lot of work, and I love the steampunk!

Practice having your dress bustled several times and have more than one person who knows how to do it. My Aunt had practiced twice but it wasn’t enough, luckily a couple of my friends helped but still it took more than 15 minutes.

I paid for a double french bustle because it gave my dress some zing. It’s a very simple dress so when the train is not down, it’s still really pretty.

Love the french on your dress. So pretty!

Very nice! I went with the ballroom bustle. Kinda gives it the bubble skirt effect.

OMG you guys are sooo adorable! Very awesome Halloween costumes- I’ll have to show the boy that Halloween can be cool for guys too!

Also- cool that you are showing how to bustle a dress… I know it costs a fortune to have one put in by a seamstress!
