I am a Sunny So-Cal bred gal who trudged across the country to follow her love of psychology and ended up finding a partner in the process. I am overly passionate about anything I involve myself with. I am an activist, a foodie, a reality TV watching junkie, an over-analyzer, a photography obsesser, and am utterly cheesy to the core. This is a story of what happens when a boy and a girl meet, fall in love over academic dorkiness, and a shared love for life. We (mostly I) are planning our semi-destination wedding in my hometown of San Diego. About Mrs. Hot Wings

Color My Wedding… Uh.. Blue?

February 8th, 2010 @ 11:40 am by Mrs. Hot Wings

I think colors and themes are about one of the most difficult decisions to make AND to keep! First off, there are so many choices. It would be simple if your personality type was very clear and matched a “style”, so to speak. We Hot Wings are not so simple. We’re in love with just about every style and see the utility in most forms of art and style. But we definitely have a love for old, vintage charm as well as the clean simplicity of modern style. Remember our engagement shoots? The 1920s Picnic and the Hip Professors?

So, what has this done to our color scheme and theme? It hasn’t helped, that’s for sure.

At first, I thought we would use blue and orange because Mr. Hot Wings is an alum from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champagne. Go Illini! But orange proved to be a difficult color for me. So, we moved on to more prominent hues of blue. I really didn’t want to use just 2 colors and have very matchy matchy decor. I like the idea of having a theme and a vibe to the space. The problem is, I can’t seem to find the right inspiration board or thematic expression, if you will, to convey my theme. Let me share with you some of my inspiration pictures.

From Apartment Therapy:

Color My Wedding... Uh.. Blue? : wedding color schemes Untitle

Martha Stewart Weddings also has the color palette I like: it’s called sea glass, but it doesn’t really have the right “feeling”.

Color My Wedding... Uh.. Blue? : wedding color schemes Mwd1047

Here are the colors that I have used thus far for our wedding elements. You’ll notice that I haven’t blogged about these DIY projects yet. Patience little bee. They are coming.

(personal photo)

With my wedding dress, more white chiffon elements, gray groomsmen suits, and an ocean backdrop… do you see it? What do you think? Does it work? What would you call this?

Here are my long winded tries at creating a thematic expression.

(1) “modern oasis with vintage charm”

(2) “modern beach cottage chic”

Here are the problems. I am afraid to use the word “beach” because I don’t want any seashells or sea horses in our decor. I don’t want the tropical look, just the lush and relaxing look, yet formal and chic. Our coordinator looked at everything I had done so far and thought I was crazy. She didn’t see cottage in there at all and the vintage is more classic chic than vintage. Oh… so lost.

Thoughts? Am I crazy? Did you have problems channeling your theme into words, too?

We aren’t really having a “theme” per say, but of your ideas, I really like the “modern oasis with vintage charm”.

I like the first expression also!! I’m afraid with the second expression people will take a literal interpretation to it.

Love those flowers in the MS pic!

Also, not to nitpick, but it’s Urbana-Champaign. Unless you’re doing it as a play on words b/c weddings = champagne?

Why not use “lake” instead of “beach”? Lake house reminds me more of up-north (going to a cottage in MI), or chilling in one of those quaint Lake Michigan towns.

Ok I love reading your posts, my fiance and I both went to U of I in Urbana and I had the EXACT same probs with the orange (decided um NO) and blue. I kept the blue for him and threw in fuschia for me =) When I tell ppl my colors I get a “Well isn’t that bright ….” Good luck!!

I am using really similar colors! It might not be exactly what you’re looking for, but I was inspired by the Snippet & Ink board “Seaglass and Storm.” Here’s the link: http://snippetandink.blogspot.com/2009/08/board-416-seaglass-and-storm.html

@Miss Sewing: That’s exactly why I liked the word oasis too!
@marcam882: I was afraid of that. It may be a ceremony close to water, but it still needs to go with our more formal reception.
@stephbolt: OMG! You are sooo right! That is a total typo. Don’t tell Mr. Hot Wings. He’ll go nuts! I should know better. Thanks for pointing that out.
@Miss Pug: Thanks for the reassurance. Those darn vendors always ask for it and I never have a concise way of describing it for them.
@whitesonnet: @Miss Pretzel: These are interesting ideas. I hadn’t thought of more lake like words since we’ll be on the Pacific Ocean. I’ll have to consider these.
@Rori711: hahah.. I totally know what you mean. People don’t seem to see my vision either.

@Jessica: Thanks for sharing Jessica! That’s really beautiful. I love that aqua teal blue color. I’ve used much more of it than I thought I would.

This is an amazing palate! I completely understand what you are going for–this is not beachy, myrtle beach style. It’s beachy- St. Lucia style.
:)
Love it!

I like whitesonnet’s idea of using “lake” instead of “beach”. I, too, didn’t want the whole beach thing to bring up thoughts of seashells and whatnot, so I’ve pretty much avoided that whole thought process in our planning.

I like number 1!

Everyone thinks we are going for a “Fall” wedding because our colors are orange and red, but we are doing bold reds and oranges - not “Fall-y” reds and oranges.

How about rustic modern beach cottage with tropical touches? Haha. That’s pretty long-winded, too.

Turquoise Bride

I got married in San Diego in August ‘08 — I used turquoise as my main color.

I wanted to it to be beachy without it being too “Florida” so the only beach elements I used were pencil starfish and sand dollars (both in white).

Your inspiration pictures are beautiful! I’m sure you’ll come up with a good way to articulate it eventually! I just ended up using flavors to describe my wedding colors…I think I might have been hungry at the time!
