Mrs. Cola's Picture
Mrs. Cola, Mountain View, CA Age and Occupation: 27, Product Communications and Promotions Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Managing Partner and Senior Designer Engagement Date: March 5, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2010 Venue: The Mountain Terrace, Woodside, CA About Me: I’m a Washington State native, enjoying life in Silicon Valley California with my fiancé, our three kitties and one leopard gecko. I like reading wedding blogs, Photoshopping wedding design mock ups, making lists, and planning, planning, planning! I’m a bit of an anomaly, on one side I’m a very girlie girl, I collect shoes, I lay out my outfits 4-6 weeks in advance, and I’d never leave the house without my hair curled and makeup on. But on the other side, I’m a total tomboy, I love to go camping and hiking, play drinking games (hey, I’m Irish!) and most of my closest friends are guys. My fiancé and I are planning a DIY-focused wedding with a balance between easygoing (what he wants) and chic and stylish (what I want), and are tying it all together with elements in lavender, sage, butter cream and chocolate.
About Mrs. Cola

We had our cupcake tasting, and it went well!

But before I go into the details, I want to first share some gorgeous cupcake designs with you all. I love looking at the many cake inspiration pictures, but these little pieces of lovely are so cute I want to die!

And just for the hive, have a look at these adorable bee cupcakes!

I especially loved the cherry blossom and leaf designs in the last picture from Icing Dreams, and it was one of several photos I took with us to Sibby’s Cupcakery for our tasting.

In preparation of our tasting, we got to select four flavors of cupcakes to try (since they’re baked fresh just for us for the tasting). On our negative one year wedding anniversary last June, we’d gotten the Sibby’s sampler mix of 24 mini cupcakes, so we already had some favorite flavors in mind. So for the tasting we picked two favorites and two new flavors: Carrot Cinnamon, Latte Love, Red Velvet, and Snickerdoodle.

Mr. Cola and I each got four minis to try, one of each flavor, and while it was a struggle to let myself eat half of each one while on my diet, they were oh so good! Seriously. Sibby’s cupcakes are better than any wedding cake I’ve ever eaten!

Have Your (Cup)Cake, Part 1: Yes, We're Gonna Eat 'Em Too! : wedding cake Img 533 (the rest of the photos in this post were taken by me)

There were also some other flavors on hand to try if we wanted to, shown on one of their pretty stands that are available for rent.

Have Your (Cup)Cake, Part 1: Yes, We're Gonna Eat 'Em Too! : wedding cake Img 53301 While we nom nom nommed, we discussed the quantity of cupcakes and design ideas. I showed off a picture of our 6 foot tall cupcake stand, on which we’d planned to put 18 dozen minis and 9 dozen regular cupcakes. However, based on Sibby’s formula, for 100 guests we would only really need about 8 dozen minis and 7 dozen regular! Whoops! And then when it came to the designs, we discovered that all my lovely, intricate designs would be an added cost. Sadness! But understandable; those designs have got to take a long time!

In the end we came up with some really great decoration ideas that won’t cost anything extra, and will look fabulous on our stand, which I’ll share in my next post (along with Photoshop mock ups :) ). We finished half of our cupcakes and left happy and full, looking forward to receiving our proposal from Sibby’s in a day or two.

Have Your (Cup)Cake, Part 1: Yes, We're Gonna Eat 'Em Too! : wedding cake Img 53302 (The remnants of our tasting. On the way there, Mr. Cola had jokingly wondered if they’d give us milk with our cupcakes, and he was very happy when they did!)

Since we only ate half our cupcakes, we took the rest home in a cute little box for later, and we had enough restraint to wait two days before diplomatically agreeing on who got which ones. (”I know you want the carrot cake one, so if you get that one, I get the latte one, okay…?”)

Have Your (Cup)Cake, Part 1: Yes, We're Gonna Eat 'Em Too! : wedding cake Img 53303 Have Your (Cup)Cake, Part 1: Yes, We're Gonna Eat 'Em Too! : wedding cake Img 53304 Coming up next I’ll share how we decided to balance the number of cupcakes we needed with the number we wanted (to make our stand look awesome), and which flavors and designs we picked!

Which flavors sound the best to you? How many cupcakes do you think each guest at a wedding would eat?

Pass me the Red Velvet please! The snickerdoodle sounds delightful too!

I would imagine each guest would only eat one, but I really don’t know.

Oh, that little tea setting cupcake is GORGEOUS!

If your cupcakes taste as good as they look and your guests are anything like me… order 2-3 each! :)

They all sound good to me…but I’d probably choose the latte…

I’d say you could plan for one cupcake per guest and be just fine. There will always be those people who won’t eat one (c’mon - if you’re not going to splurge at a wedding, then WHEN?!) balanced by the ambitious kids who try to pile at least 3 on their plate.

That said, you might order some extras ‘just in case’ (better to have leftovers than run out). Have some little boxes ready to offer up any extras as thank-yous to your clean up crew. I’m sure you won’t have any trouble sending some people home with them at the end of the night. And remember to save some for the one year anniversary if you’re not having a traditional cake at all.

approximately how much do cupcakes cost? I just started pricing them out and I don’t know what is a good price.

@SanDiegoAli, @Miss Riley and @MeadowbelleMarket - good guesses, I’m curious to see how many the guests eat too!

@MeadowbelleMarket - Actually, we’re not planning to save a cupcake for our 1 year anniversary! With cupcakes being so easy to order, we plan to just get fresh ones on our 1 year from the same baker.

@angela - I’m guessing the cupcakes pricing depends on where you’re located, just like cake prices. Here in the Bay Area, where everything is more expensive, the cupcakes from Sibby’s are $39 per dozen of regular sized and $24 per dozen of minis. I searched around last spring, and this is pretty much average in my area.

If I were a guest, I would probably eat 2-3. But that is me and my giant appetite for cupcakes!!!

I feel like most people would max out at 2 of the regular sized cupcakes. But mini cupcakes? I don’t think they register in our brain the same way. I can eat two or three normal cupcakes, tops, but I could easily eat 7 or 8 mini cupcakes.

Of course, that’s just me. :)

I think a lot of guests woudl only want 1. I would eat 1 normal size and maybe 2-3 minis.

I think that I would eat about 20. I think on average you’ll find that people will eat 2-3. Cupcakes are a little hard to resist. :)

All those cupcakes look awesome!

I was at a cupcake wedding last summer and no one there that I was with ate more than one cupcake. That being said - I like the mix of mini and regular sized cupcakes - it’ll help out those who want a little extra without eating a whole second one - and those who only want a taste to begin with.

Can’t wait for the next post on them!

I love the bee cupcakes! And if I was coming to your reception, you’d need way more cupcakes than they recommended cause I’d try them all :)

Wow, that lattice work on some of those is insane! Can’t believe they do that on a cupcake - fantastic!

We haven’t gone cake tasting yet, but I for sure know I want red velvet on one layer!
