Ms Potato Chips's Picture
Ms. Potato Chips, Boston/Narragansett RI Age and Occupation: 29, PhD Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Personal Trainer/Business Owner/Physical Therapy Assistant Engagement Date: January 1, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2010 Venue: The Narragansett Towers About Me: A semi-professional bookworm, if I could be a literary character I’d be a cross between Jo March and Jane Eyre, only better accessorized and much lazier. My hobbies include sleeping in, seasonal brews, running, Trader Joe’s, and watching Unwrapped and Good Eats with Mr. Potato Chips. I harbor an irrational fear of tulle, crafts, things that are fussy, and overuse of the phrase "Your Special Day". After a year or seven together, down the aisle we go, slouching toward adulthood and planning a Rhodie party with equal parts whimsy, cheer, and pizza.
About Ms Potato Chips

Full disclosure: I have unrealistic expectations for a honeymoon. Yes, it is true. I have a glossy-magazine, idealized, Brady-Bunched, Hollywed, Sweet-Valley-Highed, milked-and-honeyed version of ~THE HONEYMOON~ somehow lasered into my brain, and I can’t get rid of it.

In my bubble of a world, honeymoons are a time of splendor and serendipity. No one loses their wallet or forgets to pack a toothbrush. There are no sunburns, no hangovers, no bumping of flights or overbooking of rooms. No transportation or logistical issues, no There’s-no-vegetarian-option/guess-it’s-bread-for-dinner, no seaweed or jellyfish or I-think-I-have-a-cold-coming-ons. In other words, no reality. Is that too much to ask for? A little bit? Are you sure?

Instead, I imagine a suitcase packed by the editors of InStyle with floaty dresses, sarongs, Nicole-Richie-sized sunglasses, and a big straw hat.

I imagine sunrise walks on the beach, horseback rides in the surf, top-shelf booze, and an immediate room upgrade.

Where do these thoughts come from? I’m itching to go on vacation. Mr. Potato Head and I rarely go anywhere. We went on a cruise in 2004 and still talk about it like it happened last month. So on one hand, my honeymoon expectations loom large and veer towards the surrealistic/unrealistic.

But on the other hand, I’m pretty sure we’d be psyched about 60-degree weather, a mai tai, and a kiddie pool.

Next up: deciding where to make my honeymoon dreams come true. And oh wait, this all costs money. Real cash money, not Monopoly money.

Did you dream of honeymoons before you dreamed of weddings? What would your ideal honeymoon be like?

I may be more excited about my honeymoon than I am about the wedding. Please don’t hate me for saying that.

I know exactly what you mean! A honeymoon is supposed to be perfect, right? While we’re at it, what about no luggage? Your clothes just magically appear, wrinkle free, in your hotel room.

@MissChirpie: Haha, no hate from me for saying that!
@Mrs. Mouse: That would be nice. And I’m assuming all this clothing is brand new too!

:) Yeah, Fiji just sounds that much more amazing when you know that the next time you want to go somewhere, you’ll first have to shovel your car out of a snowbank! Lol!

First of all, that outfit you put together up there is adorable. Second, I hear ya. I have been one place significant–Disney World. That’s it. We haven’t decided where to go on our honeymoon and yeah, money is always an issue—boooo! Can’t wait to see what you choose.

@Curlysue: I wish I could take credit for the outfit, but alas, I cannot! We’ve traveled to Disney together, but that’s it for us as well!

ugh, with all the snow in DC right now, i’d do just about anything for 60 degrees and a mai thai right about now! Can’t wait to hear where you two end up… oh, and i’ve heard about your disney adventures from our mutual gal pal!

Oh sister-from-another-mister, I hear ya! Saddly, it applies to more than just our honeymoon. But nothing says you can buy that cute dress :)

Yep my fiancee keeps reminding me that the honeymoon does not = a full weeks of new clothes……….so I have added a cashmere cardi from JCrew to my wedding night ensemble and we are planning on our honeymoon not being anywhere tropical and since our wedding is in January and we live in Southern California that must mean more new clothes!!

Ditto x 10000. I need 14 new maxi sundresses and cool sandals and new sunglasses, right? I will look like the ladies in SATC when they take Carrie’s not-honeymoon, right? (I mean, except it’ll be a real honeymoon and all…)

I”m not even normally a beach person and I’m the same way. I can’t wait to sit on a beach and while I rarely wear a dress, esp not on vacation, i have a closet full of them. big sunglasses i susually mock, but i’m sure i’ll stock up on them too. my fiance will wonder who he went on vacaition with

We travel all the time, so I’m more excited to spend time with friends over wedding weekend. I do recommend Belize as a place for a fabulous honeymoon. Beaches and snorkeling, though I did get a nasty sunburn.

I feel you… I am still bummed that we can’t afford a honeymoon that isn’t a road trip. I am expecting lots of stress-related squabbling, and if there was ever a time I don’t want it… well, our honeymoon would be it. :-/

Honeymoons are more interesting than weddings in some ways because it’s a vacation! I’d love to go on a Nile cruise.

Ohhh P Chips, you hit the nail on the head. In fact, I didn’t even realize it until I read this post. I too suffer from perfect-honeymoon expectations that are MUCH larger than my wallet!
