Leaving My Babies

February 9th, 2010 @ 2:38 pm by Mrs. Nachos

My doggies are my babies. I love them to death and can’t wait to get home from work every day to see them. When I open the door, their whole butts wag, and it’s a wonderful feeling to know that these little ones are SO happy to see me after a long day.

Leaving My Babies : wedding pets 19 1

Left: Hazel, 4 – Shorkie aka Yorkie/Shih Tzu

Right: Princess, 8 - Yorkiepoo aka Yorkie/Toy Poodle

OK, one more…

Leaving My Babies : wedding pets 26 2

They snuggle and spoon with me under the blankets at night. Princess can’t resist a belly rub – when you walk up to her, she’s on her back ready and waiting. Hazel has endless amounts of energy and loves playing tough guy with her toys, then curling up in a ball for some good snuggle time. I’ve had both of them since they were 2 pound balls of fur and I love them like children.

Leaving My Babies : wedding pets 35 3

(yes, I made them Snuggies after cutting the bottom off mine for a Snuggie pub crawl. Hear that Snuggie maker? I thought of it first!)

Needless to say, I AM GOING TO MISS THEM SO MUCH WHEN WE’RE GONE!!! In 8 years, I have never been away from them for 2 whole weeks. If I could smuggle them in my suitcase, I would! And as a personal choice, I will never board my doggies after working at an animal hospital and seeing some HORRORS behind what could potentially happen when doggies are in the care of strangers at a kennel. My friends are lifesavers; they will be taking good care of my babies and spoiling them rotten, I’m sure. So my friend Amy is going to be staying at our apartment with them for the entire 2 weeks we’re gone and get a taste of city life, and with my friend Cathryn right around the corner, I know those doggies will get all the daily love they are used to from me. I expect pictures sent to my phone. I expect Hazel to set up the web cam and hop up on the desk to talk to us.

Leaving My Babies : wedding pets 44 4

And I will have pics of them on my camera so I can see their little-fuzzy-schnooky-poo-poo-just-wanna-squeeze-em faces when I get the urge. Wow, I’m going to be horrible when I have kids. That first day of kindergarten, I fully expect to be standing on a box peering through the window fighting off being dragged away and risking arrest to make sure he/she is OK.

Those of you with fur babies, do you have to leave them for a period of time for your wedding or honeymoon? How are you gonna keep yourself from missing them tons?

I’m making my brother live in our apartment with our cats while we are gone. I’d be too worried about them otherwise!

We’re going to be gone a week for our honeymoon, which is okay because our friends will stop by every day or so to check on the kitty (she can pretty much take care of herself as long as her food bowl gets filled and her litter box gets emptied).
My concern is when we go to Australia next spring - we’ll be gone for nearly 3 weeks (!) and I’m worried about our friends being over-burdened. Maybe I’ll have them shift kitty-duty each week so it’s not such a big task.

I’m so glad to hear your not boarding them. My baby Luke was boarded when I went to my cousin’s wedding in 08. When we got back she informed me that he “ran away” and changed her story multiple times. Essentially we think she sold our full blooded non-neutered teacup poodle. Luke would have never left his “brother” and “sister” (they technically belong to my parents/me)- those 3 went everywhere together. The Jellybean babies Daisy and Georgia will be staying with my parents while we’re honeymooning- I’ll never leave my pets in the care of a boarder ever again. I still have nightmares about Luke and on those days all I can do is cry.

I totally agree on kennels. It makes me so nervous! A few years ago a poster was brought into my work and they wanted to post that a dog got out at the kennel and were trying to find the dog before the owners returned—-I would die if my dog was missing. Heartbroken. My mom will watch our dog (a Cockapoo!) the week we are gone. He’ll have three other dogs to play with and probably won’t even miss me :(

Ahhh, I’m going to miss the kitties so much! We have a great petsitter (if any NYC bees need a rec, let me know!) and I think my sister and her boyfriend are going to spend a long weekend at my apartment to chill out with them and enjoy the city :o)

The poochies will be coming to my hometown with us for the wedding (they will be “participants” though we’re not sure how yet…) then staying with my parents for the 2 wks we’re gone. Romie has done it before when we’ve been gone for longer vacations (the longest was 2 months after a vacation followed by surgery) and is besties with my parents dog. We had all 3 of them together at Xmas, and I’m sure they’re looking forward to the reunion. I think of it like summer camp!

As for me missing them, they’re the background on my cell phone, and FI made me the cutest make up bag with Romie’s face on it for our first Xmas, so I’ll have tons of reminders with me!!

We’re actually driving the 2,000 miles from where we live to where we’re getting married so the dog can stay with my parents while we’re on our honeymoon and traveling (total of 5 weeks! we’re grad students - what else to do this summer?). People think we’re crazy, but he’s too big to fly in the cabin and too hot to fly in cargo. The kitties are staying home with a house sitter! They don’t like to leave. But I totally feel you; I’m going to miss them all SOOOO much!!!

awwwwwww, those pictures are SO cute. my two pups are snuggled on the couch behind me right now and watching the snow outside very curiously.

i know exactly what you mean about kennels. the first time we were gone for more than a night or two (we felt comfortable leaving her at the Pet’s Hotel @ Petsmart for a short time, but they don’t have any outdoor space so it wouldn’t work for longer) anyways, i had looked online for a place near the airport since we have some very oddly timed flights, but didn’t visit in person. MAJOR mistake. we felt awful leaving her there but we had a plane to catch =( i’m sure she was totally fine, but she came back ridiculously smelly, her blanket was FILTHY, it was just gross and i was so worried. this last christmas we were also leaving for a long period of time and no friends could watch her, so we had to board her again. this time i had visited the place and thought it was ok, but when my husband dropped them off he was really concerned that they would be cold (december in indiana!) and the owners didn’t really take him seriously. he called me and we both just cried, i was so worried about them. of course we called every day to check on and she was perfectly fine (and now i knew to ask for the go-home bath :-))

but i think i can never take her to a kennel again — which means for big holidays where we have to fly cross country we need to start “reserving” someone like in the summer to help us out, whether a friend or a dog sitter who can come to our house.

I love your pups, they are so cute!!

My mom is actually going to take the week off of work to watch our THREE siberian huskies for us. I also hate the idea of boarding them, and it’s so ridiculously expensive. One is still pretty much a puppy, so she needs lots of exercise and loves! I don’t think I could go away if I had to board them.

Cute puppies! I totally understand how hard it is to leave them behind.

I have to disagree about boarding though- if you do your research and find a place with a good reputation that does boarding professionally, it can work out very well.

I have worked in vet clinics that do this as an on the side business and refused to leave my animals for there even though boarding was free. Most of the time all you hear is the horror stories about kennels, and I have seen the results of bad luck at both kennels and when friends/family watch pets.

A good kennel is going to be costly but worth the peace of mind. ALWAYS check out the place first, if they don’t do tours, don’t leave your pet with them.

I kid you not, the hardest part about being in Greece for two weeks was missing my doggies.

Our cat tried to go on our honeymoon with us. He got into the bag and started hissing when we took him out.

I was just thinking about this! We have our two doggies and our cat, so finding someone to watch them is going to be a big favor to ask!

My kitty is staying with my parents (and their two cats) while we’re gone. I hate leaving her even though I know my mom spoils her silly. Sigh. I do prefer to leave my kitty with my parents for long trips though - she gets other cats to play with instead of a once a day visit from my (fabulous) cat sitter.

aww they are precious! We have a 6 yr old lhasa apso and a cat, and to be honest with you.. we are really sad about leaving them for a whole week! Luckily they’ll be with family that loves them. They really are like your children, I love them so much.
