Mrs. Argyle, St. Louis Age and Occupation: 24, Project Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Pilot Engagement Date: February 15, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Jewel Box in Forest Park and Windows on Washington About Me: I'm a true Midwestern girl (born and raised), lover of red wine, reality TV and the entire J.Crew catalog. I love to dance regardless of who is watching, and enjoy a good laugh with my girls. I have a soft spot in my heart for planet Earth, my two dogs and my fiance. Fall is my favorite season (which is why we are marrying in September), but I love a warm summer day and the Colorado mountains in the winter. We are planning a modern soiree downtown, with lots of bold colors, and fun, eco-friendly elements.

Sort of DIY Centerpieces

February 9th, 2010 @ 2:15 pm by Mrs. Argyle

Early in my planning, I spent a lot of time racking my brain for ideas for our centerpieces. We had not yet met with any florists, but I already gotten the idea that flowers were going to be expensive for what we would have wanted. I couldn’t decide if I wanted something dramatic or simple. I surely knew I do not want anything over-done or too tall.

While searching around on the web, I found some great options. The first one is from Project Wedding. I really like the simplicity of it. By just immersing a few calla lilies into talk cylindrical vases of varying heights, it gives off a simple and modern feel that we both really liked.

I also really liked the idea of working several different looking vases or ones of varying heights just to give depth to the centerpieces. I would rather not have one big hunk of flowers in the middle of the table. Here is another idea similar to the first one:

Most of all, I really liked the idea of using local, fresh organic ingredients/elements, like those in the image below. It creates a good mixture of different textures and shades of green (our wedding colors are red, brown and orange… so I would go with elements in those hues). It is a different look than your standard vase with flowers.

With all these great ideas, I was beginning to wonder if it was going to be worth it to DIY all this myself, which got my wheels turning to think of some more creative ideas.

What green elements that aren’t necessarily floral would make great wedding centerpieces?

I love limes and green “Lemonheads.” It depends on how formal you are going, but they look awesome when put together!

Hmm, what about large, square/rectangular planter boxes of wheatgrass?

Apples :D I love the wheatgrass and limes as well. Grapes look great :D… You could also use a green colored liquid with floating candles in varying heights..

You all are on the ball!

I realized I was not more specific in my post - by green I meant “eco-friendly,” but some of your literal green ideas are fantastic!

Love wheatgrass, very earthy, but has a great hue!

i think you can use wood scraps (like birch stumps) or vintage glassware — always abundant at goodwill stores! we had a non-floral wedding and it was great!

I love the look of thin branches with lots of crystals. I didn’t want one big bouquet in the middle either.

One thing you should keep in mind is that pictures like the first aren’t always as easy as they seem. Yes it looks like a bunch of calla lilies submerged in water but if you look carefully those three cylinders are EXACTLY the same. They are literally one cylinder replicated twice through photoshop. Flowers that you put in a vase will never look exactly the same, you could have half your flowers floating to the top of the vase or sinking to the bottom.

On another note, I like the idea of semi DIY. Purchasing your own vases cheap and then asking a florist to work with the flowers would be a good option…

I’ve seen some nice centrepieces with limes, but never apples - like the change!

I think anything you can rent is eco-friendly… our florist is putting together manzanita branches in clear glass vases with river rocks (all of which she can reuse over and over again). The only non-reusible part are a couple orchid stems that she’s going to weave throughout the branches.

I love acorns!!! I have a short, wide, round vase on my kitchen island that, during the fall, is filled with acorns with a candle in the middle….I get lots of compliments.

I used a mix of lemons and limes in vases I bought at yard sales and Marshall’s Home Goods. The fruit was cheap and we used it to make lemonade and lime punch at our brunch the next day :)

If you like the idea of going green what about just using items you already have around the house? Ive seen books being used as centerpieces…love that one. Maybe a picture frame with some other items. I love all of these photos you have here. The last one is my fav I love all the different textures and pieces. Were using hydrangeas with lemons in the vases…blue and yellow are our colors!! So excited to see them and the tall ones will have branches with paper butterflies on them!

Good luck!
