I'm planning a half-destination wedding on the beautiful island of Oahu - imagine a plethora of movies, art and games; savory Hawaiian food; blended Chinese and Japanese cultural details; lush, fragrant tropical flowers and all the air conditioning a NorCal native could want! And once I marry the love of my life, we'll come back to the 'mainland' to party it up all over again in my hometown of Salinas, the salad-bowl capital of the world!

The Big Bag Setback

February 9th, 2010 @ 10:58 am by Mrs. Sewing

Remember those silly little bags of mine? Well, they made the trip over to Hawaii (along with some Trader Joe’s biscotti - TJ’s products are a precious commodity over there) to the waiting arms of Mr. Sew’s Aunty.

She set up an appointment with our venue, and tried the covers on the chairs.

Here’s Bag #2, the biggest of the three. She said this one fit the best, since it was long enough to cover the entire chair back. I think this would look very nice with a wide satin ribbon tied into a bow around the base. (Bag #1 was too narrow and did not fit at all.)

Bag #3 was also a good fit, but not quite long enough to cover the back.

And not only did she take pictures, she also traced the outline of the chair back for us on paper! My very own pattern!

But as much as I’d like to say this was a successful mission, Aunty-Sewing did voice several concerns.

  1. The mon is upside down. Well, I knew this was going to happen, obviously, but I figured a right-side up bag was more important than a right-side up chair. I don’t think it looks too silly upside down, do you?
  2. The strap just kind of hangs there (you can see this on bag #3). Because of this, we changed our design to a drawstring type bag instead.
  3. The chair seat. Yes, this would be the biggest problem, and one that I underestimated. Sewing-Aunty made it clear that the bright blue/mauve combo on the chair did not go with the black bag. And here I thought black goes with everything! I had hoped that this problem would be minimized by the fact that people have their butts on the chair, but due to her strong opinions, I was left wondering if I should do something more.

So I didn’t know what to do. I still loved my original idea (and eventually just went with it), but when Sewing-Aunty said I should just scrap it and rent covers instead, and Sewing-Mom said I should rent “those cute little bamboo-looking chairs” (chivari) instead… well, it was kind of disheartening.

Anyone else have a moment where your plans didn’t mesh with those of others? Did you end up changing your plans, or stubbornly stick with your gut?

can you rent a plain chair cover and do a band with your monogram? then you don’t have to worry about the print on the chair and you don’t have to do as much sewing.

aww.. I really love this idea. It’s so creative. In all the wedding planning I’ve had to change things because others disagreed so vehemently too. But I’ve also stuck to my guns on some issues. So hopefully in the end, it events out.

I was wondering about a few of those issues when you mentioned this project before but I was hoping for your sake everything would work out! It’s such a bummer when things don’t go how you imagined them…

i have an idea
why dont you add a flap to the bag so it covers the seat and when its a bag you just flap it over like the backpack thingies or book bags..

I think you should stick to your original idea on this one. I know it’s hard when you have something envisioned and it doesn’t work out completely — I’ve been there. It’s also really hard when people don’t share your vision — been there, too. Hang in there!

I still can’t get over the fact that your mom actually encouraged you to order chivari chairs, mine freaked out at the cost immediately!

@michelle: haha, yeah we thought of maybe doing that! but I was afraid it’d get too complicated..
@AprilBride10: haha, that’s because she didn’t know the cost!

I’m glad you stuck with it! I think your idea is amazing, and you definitely won’t notice the chair seats when people are sitting in them.

I’m with Mouse, I doubt the bottoms will really be all that bad, the chairs will be tucked in at the tables when people walk in, and once they’re all sitting, you won’t be able to see the bottoms anyway.

@mrspaetz: good point! I was a little worried about this, but mr. sew says it’s not a problem. If it is, I’m blaming him!

My venue provides padded folding chairs (v. functional but not pretty) and I decided that the chairs were not important enough to rent covers or rent other chairs so I’m completely impressed by your desire to continue with the bags even though you have real chairs.

I love this idea and I like that you stuck with it despite people’s concerns. It’s such a cool idea.

I agree with the others who said with the chairs tucked under, nobody will notice the seats. And yeah, I usually just do whatever I want, even if others disagree with my wedding plans. :)

Hello!
I am a Japanese liviing in Japan. In my opinion, I will be depressed when I see my Mon upside down. This Mon presents our family which includes all relatives and ancestors. Though I think it is a good idea to use a big bag to cover the seat.

To avoid misunderstanding, is their anyway to ask Mr. Sew’s mother for her opinion?
