September 10, 2009 started out like any other. I got up, got ready for work with the plan to head down to Gearhart that night to hang out with Mr. Gingham’s parents. This seemed like a logical plan, as we had taken the next day off to head to Vegas, so having a free night with no real commitments the next morning seemed like a great time to go visit his family.

The plan was for me to leave work at 4, head home, grab Chance (my dog) and meet Mr. G outside the building he works in at 5. Again, all of this was a very normal plan. I pick him up at 5 there nearly every day. So, I got the dog and I sat outside waiting for him when I got a text that said, “can you park and come upstairs? I need some help with a box.” Again, this was all very normal. Mr. Gingham often has samples to take home and needs help with boxes.
I parked the car and started to walk into the building and saw Mr. Gingham walking out with a box. I asked him if he still needed help, expecting him to say no, but instead he said he still needed some help and lead me to some benches in front of the building. He set down the box, opened it up and pulled out a flower (red Gerber daisy – my favorite) and gave me a card that said some really beautiful things. The last line of the card read “we have one more thing to do”, and then he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. And of course, I said yes.
This is a day I will remember for the rest of my life. This is the day my best friend and I decided to spend the rest of our lives together.
Oh, and I should also add that Mr. Gingham had this whole thing planned out—big time. He actually wore the same shirt he was wearing the day he met me and wanted to actually propose in the exact place we first met (downstairs in the building he works in) but there was a meeting going on so he did it right outside. If you listen to Brad Paisley’s “Then” you’ll hear a perfect example of how he proposed to me—right in the spot we first met (FYI - “Then” is now our first dance song).
After we were engaged we headed down to Gearhart to surprise his parents, checked out a wedding venue and had dinner. It was the most beautiful night I’ve ever seen at the beach and we’re crossing our fingers that our wedding night will be equally as beautiful.
Now, I should also add that I was completely surprised by the proposal. I was convinced he was going to propose in December, at Christmastime when we were with my family, so the day before we headed down to Vegas with our friends was a complete surprise. I certainly wasn’t dressed appropriately, and while I had at least showered that day, I hadn’t even washed my hair!

This is a picture of us at dinner with his parents. It is an awful picture of me. I had been crying all evening (good tears, of course) and had worn off all my makeup, plus I had greasy day-old hair. So please, no laughing. I’m posting this up to so that you guys realize your proposal day does not have to be the day you look your best or require any special outfit. In fact, no matter what you look like, it may just turn out to be one of the best days of your life!
So hive, do any of you have stories about a proposal that caught you off guard or on a day you may not have looked your best?
