Mrs. Scissors's Picture
Mrs. Scissors, LaGrange, GA Age and Occupation: 25, Photography & Graphic Design Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Engineering Grad Student Engagement Date: January 1, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2010 Venue: Ceremony - First United Methodist Church; Reception - My parents' house! About Me: I’m a six-foot-three bride with a fifty-foot personality! I love great art, fabulous design, intense color, tons of music, indie photography, watching movies on repeat, and being really awesome. This super-tall, Southern, loud, quirky, neurotic artist is marrying a German, quiet, silly, super-amazing roboticist in an eclectic, funky, fun, snazzy, technicolored June wedding. Anything is game for this shindig, for it is all about us! We’re bringing giant paper cranes, six-foot-tall portraits, fortune cookies, a photo booth, a club-circuit DJ, handcuffs, and possibly a kidnapping to this small Southern town. Watch out, y’all, and try to keep up!
About Mrs. Scissors

So you know those Save the Date things? The ones that you’re supposed to send out, oh, roughly six months in advance of your wedding?

Holla, homegirl over here never made a decision, and it looks like it’s probably too late, or a moot point… at this point.

You see, I didn’t just not do them. (Double negative, ahoy!) I did a lot of them. Quite a lot, actually. My biggest problem is that I obsess and nitpick over any design work I do for myself. I can churn out stuff for other people—no problem! There is just some sort of roadblock for me when it comes to making decisions about our wedding, and the paper goods have had the biggest roadblock of all.

Let’s just take a look at a few, shall we?

First, the ones we’ve seen before. Looking back on these, I still really love them.

Then I got restless, because I couldn’t find anyone to print them to my liking in the appropriate time slot, or so I thought. Our engagement pictures came in, and I made this one.

I got neurotic about the text coloring, so I moved on. (I also was still having finding-a-printer issues). I found the gorgeous work of MaeMae Paperie, and so I started playing with some vector drawings I had done as mock-ups for a series of etchings I made for my printmaking studio.

Then Bunny pointed out that if someone didn’t know about my crane thing, that, well, it sort of looked like a bagina. (Yes, I am calling it a bagina.) I have to agree. Man down.

Anyway, moving along. I decided I was going to get my rear in gear and just order some postcards off of Moo and be done with it. Our stuff on the front, website on the back, kraft envelope, finito.

After a test run of those puppies with my trusty new home printer, I decided that they were sort of “meh” when printed out. Just didn’t really do much for me… at all. Then, I printed these, which were purely a joke.

It was a silly cut-paper scan that I had done from a printed-on-cheap-copy-paper-and-draft-setting of one of our engagement pictures. And it looked fantastic printed out. I loved it, Mr. Scissors loved it, Mom loved it… OK, you get it. It was loved.

I never pulled the trigger. Why? I have no idea. At this point, is it too late? We could have these in, printed, and ready to go in 10 days maximum, but, well, is it worth it?

So wonderful peeps, I am at a standstill. I do not know what to do. Should I order these last babies and be done with it? Should I scrap it all and just move on to invitations? Is it ridiculously too late (our wedding is in June, 4 months away)? Has anyone else had some major trouble pulling the trigger when designing your own stuff? Did it drive you to the point of “can’t do a damned thing,” or did you man up and get the job done?

*Engagement photos were taken by the awesome Matt Miller, as if you didn’t know! All the rest are by me.

Well… Is there anyone on your guest list that doesn’t know that your wedding is June 19? People’s summer calendars are starting to fill up this time of year, so to be safe… maybe you should send them to be safe?

Oh heck, I’d send them. A friend getting married the same day just got mine to me a week or so ago. Don’t feel bad.

Send them electronically! That is what I did a few weeks ago and my wedding is in May. Free, people have it in their heads and on their calendars without much fuss. Love the designs!

We just got an STD the other day for a wedding on June 12. So, I’d say if you move quickly, you’re still okay.

You are so cool!! I love love those second to last ones, where you’re standing in those cubicles thingys (at least on a monitor they look amazing!!). I bet the last ones look really good printed too, as you say.

As for sending out the STDs… I guess it depends on if a lot of people will be coming from out of town, and if they are actually going to be used as a tool to let people know about wedding stuff (in which case - yes, send em out!) If it’s more of a fun little thing to make people smile, I’d almost wait and just send the invites out a bit early. That’s just me though… and I’m cheap (thinking about printing, and stamps..) You could always use one of your designs and get it printed really large and framed for a wall, so your efforts weren’t wasted? (If you have any wall space left… it seems like you are quite the artsy gal).

But from personal experience, we’re having an out of town wedding and the STDs have proven invaluable, as people have already started booking hotel rooms, etc., which they wouldn’t have been able to do had they not known that they will be invited. Our wedding is end of May, and I’m planning on sending out the regular invites middle of March.
Good luck either way!

Last year I went to four weddings in the span of six weeks (August - October) and for the September 23rd wedding, I got the StheD sometime in June. Do not fret, send them anyway, you worked hard on them and they’re so cute!

miss sizz, these all rock. seriously. every single one of them has it’s own special appeal. if i HAD to choose, I would pick the last one. and YES i think you should totally feel proud to send it out. you probably could wait to just send the invites instead of sending both, but i think this STD is too damn cute to not grace your guest’s mailboxes.

I don’t think its too late. I sent mine out about 4 and a half months in advance. I think thats totally fine for something thats not a destination wedding.

PS - Love reading your posts, I’m also an Atlanta bride.

A former best friend of mine is getting married late-April—she just sent an email a week ago for “save-the-dates” and it was all text and, well, pathetic. She needs to send out her invites come the end of this month so THAT is too late. But no, I think you really should send them out. I love them all but that last one is so cool! Very different :)

if you want to do them, you should go for it. they look great. 4 months is plenty of advance notice. on the other hand, if you’re not feeling up to it, you don’t have to do them. but i’m hoping you do because they look great!

I’m a 6/12/10 bride and we are just sending our STD’s this weekend. We had to add STD’s last minute, our calligrapher took time getting the envelopes back to us, but they are getting out this weekend or else!

These are all great! Go ahead and send them out! We decided not to do Save the Dates, but maybe we would’ve if we had some cool designs like these!

I say send them out since people will be making summer plans plus they are awesome.

P.s. I love that we have the same name and both live in GA. I may have to hit you up for some design advice when I start planning!
