Mrs. Spaniel's Picture
Mrs. Spaniel, Los Angeles Age and Occupation: 28, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Psychologist Wedding Date: March 2010 Venue: Calamigos Ranch About Me: I'm a third-year law student trying to balance graduating with starting my career, keeping up a relationship, and, oh yeah, planning an Old World, multi-cultural, "mountain lodge" wedding for 180 guests! A South Asian Jewish girl getting ready to marry my handsome Catholic Dane, I'm hoping to blend our cultures in our wedding just a bit more gently than by providing samosas as appetizers and offering æbleskiver for dessert. (Although that would also be awesome.)
About Mrs. Spaniel

As the wedding barrels down on me (ZOMG, it’s coming SO SOON!!!), I’ve had to start thinking about things that never would have occurred to me to put on a big to-do list when we first got engaged… like my nail color! I mean, who would let themselves get caught up in their freaking fingernails when there are so many other things to take care of? This Spaniel would!

I first started thinking that this decision would be a little more complicated than walking into a nail salon and out with a simple French tip when I saw this at Maharani.

After totally creeping out Mr. Spaniel (”Is that a NAIL? By itself?“—he is also horrified by hair and eyelash extensions), I started to think that maybe some color wasn’t a bad idea.

After all, our wedding palette is pretty muted—heck, even my shoes are only gold—and next to the dark mehndi stain, a rich color might be a nice contrast as compared to some of the light, “bridal” colors I had first considered.

Anyway, I’m now weighing the pros and cons of trying to recreate the red and gold reverse French tip (trial run required)—or maybe just gold tips with a red base?—or just sticking with a deep red alone (no trial run necessary!). What do you think?

Have you given much thought to your wedding nail ’do? What did you decide?

The red and gold is so daring! I’m pretty conventional when it comes to my nails–I use pale pink daily and will probably use the same shade for my wedding day. : )

Either plain deep red, or deep red with gold tips!

I’m going short and hot pink, just like our e-shoot. I’m strange. :p

I am also creeped out by the nail all by itself.

HAHA yeah, that nail was a little freaky.

With your mehndi I think the dark red with a very thin edge of gold might look awesome! Be careful with gold tips though-it may look a little RuPaul ;) Cool thing though, if the gold doesn’t look good with the mehndi then you can paint over it with some more red.

Yeah, the nail creeped me out too. I’m thinking pink. Gold maybe. Who knows. :D I like the idea of deep red with gold tips!

I really want to do a red, but we’ll see how that works out - it might be too much for me with my red shoes and the possible wearing of a red bolero.

I haven’t decided what I’m doing yet, but I’ve given it plenty of thought!
I think the red and gold you’re considering would look totally sweet, but I’d do a trial run first.

What about the reverse tip on the toe nails, and deep red on the fingernails? Now I’m worried about @Curlysue’s RuPaul! ;)

You know, what you could do is have the classic french tip (white tip over a pinkish nail) and then have a thin band of gold separating the two. I had a friend do that for a wedding and it looked so good- classy and yet when you get up close, a little hint of sassy!

i’m a big fan of the classic red. or the gold.
reverse tips always seem a little bit too bold for me!

I vote short and deep red. It is exactly what I had painted on, and then subsequently ruined…thankfully my hair place had a nail girl on hand, and she removed it and put on clear, which I requested at that point. Clear worked out great for me, but since it was rainy on my wedding day, we have a follow up session with our photographer in Spring and will do short red nails then.

But then? I’m not really a french manicure girl in any case.

@Keladry: It IS sassy! But not enough color, I think.

@LatteLove: Do you mean solid gold? On my olive-yellow skin tone, gold by itself doesn’t really look so good. Or did you just mean the gold tip?

@Christine: Yeah, if I go with a bold color, I am *definitely* keeping my nails short!

I think plain deep red is the best way to go.

The nail by itself is a little creepy! I didn’t know what it was at first. It’ll be a really pretty look for you. I’m going with red nails.

Just make sure that your nails are on the shorter side, and you won’t have to worry about RuPaul :P

My plan is short and red…so I say go for the deep red!

I love the idea of the red and gold. I’m already imagining your photos and I can’t wait until they exist for us to see.

My nail color will be our easiest decision. My favorite color in general is the same color I always get on my nails on the rare occasions when I get a manicure, and it’s also our primary wedding color: wine/burgundy. Love it, looks good on everyone. Hm, speaking of everyone, I guess the bridesmaids will have the same color. It’ll match their dresses after all.
