About Mrs. Hot Wings

Now, let’s talk about adding visual interest to a picture. I learned this trick in my high school photography class. When in doubt, make triangles. Yes, triangles. You’ll hear Tyra Banks say to create shapes with your body. Yes, this is true. Shapes are good. But the best shape of them all for photography is the triangle. All types of triangles… oblong, obtuse, equilateral, right triangle. In these images, they’re basically all created equal in my humble opinion. Again, I’m no expert. Did you notice I referenced my high school photography class? Yup… that’s all, folks. But here are some visually interesting pictures where triangles stand out. Can you count the number of triangles in each?

Left: Do you see the triangles created in the photo? Right: Check out her arms and her leg.

I love this photo. Her body is creating all sorts of triangles here. How many triangles can you count in this picture?

You can even use structural triangles to add interest to a picture. Now, in this case you’ll likely have to see if your photog has an eye for these structural triangles. Unless of course, you have a way of moving metal and earth (X-Men no?).

Case in point: Notice this pretty lady’s leg? Notice how putting her heel up on the wall makes a triangle.

Look what the non-model in me did instead of making the pretty triangle! Don’t tell me I don’t love you hive, because I haven’t shared this with anyone! See how awkward my legs are? It could have been such a good picture, too. But nope, I messed it up.

How else can you create triangles in photographs?

I love these posts and I don’t think you look awkward in your photo—you guys are still just too cute for words.

@Curlysue: aw. You’re so sweet.
@Miss Pug: I’m sure you can mix it up. The relaxed pictures probably look more casual and have there own sweetness to them.

I envision me, the klutz, trying to balance on one leg while making a triangle (a la photo 1) turning into me falling over onto the floor while everyone laughs. I will have to try the arm triangles though!

@Miss_Riley: heehee… I hope your photog has a quick shutterspeed to capture the falling. I kid I kid. Kids and one leg is definitely a task.

I’m glad I have something to fall back on when Tyra Banks’ technique of ’smizing’ doesn’t work for me!

Great post! Just wondering - do you think this applies just to people, or to objects as well? I’m trying to photograph my jewerly collection, and am wondering if the pictures would benefit from some triangles…

Ooh I love yervant. He’s such a sweet man and of course extremely talented! :)

The triangles work for just about anything you photograph… it does make things more interesting visually.
