So - you want to know how we met? Here you go - I LOVE telling this story.
One August day in 2007, I saw an email come in from a director on our team announcing a new team member to the group named Mr. Gingham. It said Gingham was moving back to Oregon from Florida. He liked to surf, was from the coast, loved the Oregon State Beavers, etc. I told my roommate at the time (and now a bridesmaid) that “this guy should be my boyfriend” (and of course, made her read the email too). Even though she probably dismissed it as some far-fetched idea, she did humor me enough to “stalk” Mr. Gingham on MySpace that night (yes, I admit, I had a MySpace account but that’s back when it was cooler than Facebook).
In our digital sleuthing, I found out that Mr. G had a girlfriend but was also thoroughly impressed that his profile song was sung by Rascal Flatts, and since you already know I love country music, you know that this was a big deal to me. A few days later I met Mr. Gingham in person. I was sharing an office in one of the buildings on campus and Mr. G’s manager brought him around to meet the team. He was wearing a pink shirt (remember this when you read about our proposal) and I thought to myself, “man, he is cute” but then, knowing that he had a girlfriend, went along with my normal life.
This “normal” life stayed pretty normal until March 2008.
Mr. Gingham and I saw each other at work and became pretty good friends, and when he decided to start the “Sunday Singles Club” (single people were to meet up on Sunday to do fun things), I decided to join. Unfortunately, Sunday Singles Club never got a fair start because he and I became an “us” before the first meeting.
On Friday, March 28, 2008, Mr. Gingham rallied our work team together and got everyone to head down to a local bar after work. We were hanging out and having some laughs when another guy came up and asked for my phone number. I was single and the guy was cute, so I gave it to him. Mr. Gingham later came up to me and asked if I was going to go out with him and I said, “why not?” To which he replied, “because you should go out with me instead.” (Um, how adorable is that??!!)
That moment is still one of the best moments of my life because at that point, I knew something special was about to happen.
So then we were sitting at the local bar with our closest friends and co-workers around us when someone asked what we were going to do for our first date. One of our friends (now bridesmaid) suggested that we attend the Rascal Flatts concert the next week, and after prodding from another friend to get the date finalized right then and there, Mr. Gingham said of course he’d take me. (Note – I learned later that tickets to that concert cost him $400!) Rascal Flatts turned out to be an amazing concert and probably the best date I’ve ever had.
And as they say, the rest is history…
The love we feel for each other it too much for words; it goes beyond anything I could put down on this page. I believe our story was written long before we were around to start living it and that no matter where our story takes us in the future, we’ll experience it together and love every moment of it. Mr. Gingham truly is the love of my life and my best friend. I’m so lucky to have found him and can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with him.
So, how about you? Did fate, a feeling of a higher power, or just plain coincidence play a role in how you met your fiance?
