A Lesson in Saying “Cheese”

February 11th, 2010 @ 10:41 am by Mrs. Sewing

Sewing-Mom is the sports photographer for the local high school district. And while she’s great at capturing those quick action shots, and even the occasional senior portrait, she’ll need a little help to transition to wedding photography. And while she will not be our main wedding photographer, she’ll be shooting our engagement pictures and has promised to wear her camera around her neck as she proceeds us down the aisle.

Since she expressed a big interest in learning about it, and I of course wanted all her pictures to come out marvelously, I gave her some self-serving presents:

A Lesson in Saying Cheese : wedding family Book1

Wedding photography books!

The books are pretty interesting, actually. The book on the left is simplified, but highlights all the important aspects like lighting, composition, candids, perspective, etc. The book on the right is much more technical, and gets into the nitty gritty camera settings and Photoshop techniques.

A Lesson in Saying Cheese : wedding family Book2 See, I even tried making her a bookmark!

I hope she finds them useful. I told her she can leave the high school business and become a wedding photographer someday. Sewing-Dad met me with an empathetic, “NO.” He’s under the impression that a bride would be a more difficult/picky client than the kid in jersey #12. Sewing-Mom hates pressure, so he may be right.

Are friends or family helping take your pictures? How are you (subtly) letting them know what you want?

I’d be really interested in flipping through those books—even more so if I were unofficially photographing someone’s wedding!

We have a friend who will shoot our rehearsal dinner. He’s a music photographer as a side gig (IT guy by day- concert photographer by night). He did wedding photos for a friend and they were amazing- but he has absolutely no interest in doing wedding photography… wants to stick to music. :)

Two of my ‘maids are photographers, so I fully expect that they will take pictures beforehand and at the rehearsal. Our lovely photog has a second shooter, so I told my girls to enjoy the day on Wedding day.

I do want to have my guests take candids with disposable cameras, or funky toy cameras– I think they’d be into it, and I’ll bet some of the photos come out awesome!! Although they better not be nicer than the pro ones for what we’re paying! =)

That’s so sweet that you got those books for her. :)

I know on the day of the wedding they’ll have to steal the camera out of my hands.

That’s funny. That first book on the left, the cover is a stock photo from iStock. The model is a friend of mine. Also, she has never been married.
