Har har. Sorry, I couldn’t come up with a clever title for this post. Anyhoo. This is a post about a small but oft-overworked facial feature - the eyebrows.
I have Asian brows - brow hair that is simultaneously long and sparse. This makes for some tricky maintenance, since the brow hair root is nowhere near where the hair falls. You can pluck, but that can lead to a vicious cycle of too-thin brows, overzealous pencil and, well… I’m scared of this:
Because of this danger, I’ve always left any brow care to the professionals.
For the past 5 years, I’ve frequented hole-in-the-wall threading joints spread throughout NYC. For $6-10, you surrender your brows to a lovely Indian grandma, who threads your brows into shape. Each visit, I say my usual “Not too thin - just clean up,” and my mandate is heeded with varying degrees of success. I haven’t ever had a horrible experience, but every so often my brows end up a tad too thin.
As the wedding day approaches, I wanted to reduce that uncertainty. That’s when I discovered Lilibeth, who believes in the groomed but natural look - would she transform my brows from blah to beautiful?
Lilibeth spent a half hour with me, explaining her brow grooming process and philosophy. Looking at each customer’s natural brow shape, face and age, she puts together a brow plan. She primarily uses tweezers and this neat little razor thing to whip them into shape. Here is the result:

Yeah, I don’t know why I’m making a Miley pout in this picture. I’m just going to chalk it up to my intense picture-taking concentration.
I loved them. She groomed them without thinning them out, and used a bit of powder shading to make up for the sparseness. The brows were proportionate to my facial features, and I think I look a bit more youthful. I’m such a total sucker for products that I bought the starter kit to put together this look every day. The steps involved to fill them in and make sure they stay in place take a little getting used to, but now it only takes me a minute or so in the morning. And with Miss Rainbow’s helpful brow tutorial, I’m fairly certain I can attempt the upkeep myself. I can confidently say I’m a full-brow convert.
How do you keep your ‘brows in shape?
