On Being Slightly Aged

February 11th, 2010 @ 6:10 pm by Mrs. Pug

With an emphasis on the “slightly”, people—don’t get carried away. I’m 33—by no means the youngest or the oldest of brides out there. However, I am above the average age of a bride, both nationally (26.9 years) and locally (NYC–29 years).

I’ve been trying to think of how my age and all that comes with it have affected my wedding planning. It’s a tough call, since the impetus for any wedding-related decision is usually multi-fold—my choices are influenced not just by my age, but also by budget, personal priorities, and so on.

But one thing I felt did demonstrate my age more than other details is our registry.

I’ve been living in apartments for 11 years since college, 7 of those in my own apartment, and 2-3 of them with Mr. Pug. Over the years that I’ve been building a home, I’ve treated myself to some things for which people usually wait to register, particularly in the cooking area.

What do we already have? Here are some popular registry items that we have, and my two cents (whether you like it or not). We have this…

The highly touted KitchenAid mixer–it was actually a hand me down, but point is that I have it so I won’t be registering for it. I love this because I like to bake, but I don’t think it’s worth the expense unless you bake a lot—there are handheld mixers and less $$$ stand mixers out there that work perfectly well.

Cuisinart food processor—works great, pain in the ass to clean without a dishwasher. Dammit I wish I could register for a dishwasher. There are newer models of this—if you like to cook, chances are you want one of these.

On Being Slightly Aged : wedding registry Calphal calphal

Calphalon anodized cookware—I’ve had this set for about 10 years (an older version). My advice? If you are familiar with how you cook and which pots/pans you use, buy them a la carte instead of as a set. I am registering for a few pieces that I use constantly from the All-Clad, because, well, just because (okay I’m a sucker for the reputation and quality! I think of it as an upgrade! I’m a snob!).

On Being Slightly Aged : wedding registry Wusthof wusthof

Source

Wusthof knives. I’ve learned that what I use most is the chef’s knife (7-8″) and a paring knife, and really could have gone a la carte on this. (Don’t forget a bread knife.)

On Being Slightly Aged : wedding registry Creuset creuset

Source

Le Creuset 5 1/2 quart Dutch oven. This is my workhorse. And I leave it out on the stovetop because it looks nice. I make sauces, soups, stews, and braised goodies in this.

These Christy towels are THE BEST towels I’ve ever had. Absorbent, thick, hold up really well (wash a few times beforehand to get the lint off). They go on sale a lot at Bloomingdales—don’t buy at full price, fool! (Fet it? Full, fool? I kill me.)

400-count sateen sheets. We got these at a mega-sale at Bloomie’s. They’re nice, but really, Mr. Pug is the linen lover so this is more up his alley. I guess they’d be great if he didn’t drool on them all the time (kidding).

Any registry advice out there? Things you wish you had registered for, things you wish you hadn’t?

We haven’t registered just yet (will be next weekend), but I too have quite a few items that I don’t want to replace, which includes my KitchenAid stand mixer and a really awesome crockpot!

thanks for the tip on the towels- we need new ones and i’m a label whore, so i got for the polo ones. but those never stay soft! also, my mini cuisinart is my LIFE and i can’t wait for the day when I can get a stand mixer (the hand mixer works, but gets splatters all over the walls of my tiny nyc kitchen).

I am also finding things hard for what we will register for. I’m not that old (25) and FI is 30 so we’ve both had many Christmas’s to get really nice quality things. I don’t know how we’ll ever come up with 300+ items. All I can thing of are towels and dish towels. Maybe another sheet set. Can you register at Lowe’s for a new bathroom vanity? We may register and take things back. Return policy for cash is #1 question on my list.

We have the same issues (we have the KitchenAid Mixer, the KitchenAid Food Processor, a fine microwave and toaster, great All-Clad pans, Global knives, etc.)!!

We’re registering for family gathering/entertaining basics (like 12 place settings of basic white dishes and nice wooden salad bowl) and hoping to upgrade older/worn stuff (more towels, an extra set of sheets, etc.). What about decorative things like lamps, throw pillows, vases, etc?

I went to TOWN with my registry - I looove to cook and bake and Mr. Ramen actually held me back from buying cooking toys for myself for a few years, so I suffered with cheap college cookware and hand-me-downs for a while. I agree with you about the purchasing a la carte - we were gifted a Wusthof knife set and our Calphalon cookware, which I love, but know I’ll probably mainly use just a few things from each set.

I never had a dishwasher until graduating college but now I cannot imagine my life without it! It’s weird how quickly one becomes accustomed to gadgetry…

We for real registered for a slap chop. It is my most desired gift at present. I have to way for FI to get home to chop onions whenever I cook, and I am hoping that this gadget will eliminate that problem.

I am having the same issue, I registered for some upgrade stuff like towels and sheets, we love to entertain outdoors so we registeres for an indoor outdoor wireless speaker, a few nice folding chairs from BBB, a fire pit for our patio, some new luggage, a steam mop, and we did a honeymoon registry. I may add a few more kitchen gadgets.

Hope I gave you guys some ideas! :)

We have not registered n to be honest I’m kind of up in the air bout registering. We will register for a few items just to give people an idea our style. I prefer the element of surprise when it comes to receiving gifts.

We are having the same problem (we’ll both be 35 when we get married in July, and were pretty well-estab’d before we moved in together)… We just registered at C&B, and we have a whopping 22 items there. Just not a lot we NEED… nor have space for!! We think we’re gonna register at Home Depot though, since the big debate was “new kitchen…, or wedding?”. Maybe we’ll just get a bunch of gift cards and end up with both!!

BTW, we have the same kitchen, with the stand mixer and the Le Creuset and all! Yay that you’re going for All-Clad (our favorite) and Wusthof (although Mr. Bean is a Henkels guy)!! And great, honest recommendations for those who need to start building up their kitchens!

I am 32 and we had a lot of stuff already, too. But a lot of it was hand-me-downs or cheap, so a lot of the registry was upgrades, like nice knives, better pans and so forth. Also things I would never spend my own money like a sweet-ass $70 Simple Human garbage can that I love.

And, engaged girls: YOU CAN NEVER HAVE ENOUGH BLANKETS AND BEDDING! Or maybe that’s just me.

@ChiDIY - You’re going to think I’m nuts, but go back and register for the Onion Goggles instead of the Slap Chop if you are trying to avoid the onion thing! I’ve heard nothing but great things about them, they look dorky but who cares! Ever since time I entertain and cook something with onion in it, I have to either wait until I’m done to put on eye makeup or completely reapply after washing my face!

I’m looking forward to registering for nice knives, the stand mixer, and and towels - All things I’ve owned for years but really would like to ‘upgrade’

We are also planning to register (somewehre if we can find it?) for camping gear - Nicer tent, camp stove, chairs, etc. Again, have all that stuff but its either cheap or handed down - and we love camping. :)

Mr. KM has several pieces of Le Creuset cause he bought them in college… such a smart one, that fiancee of mine! I have yet to cook with them, though, cause they’re in storage.

I don’t have any advice, but we have those knives and they may be my favorite kitchen related item. They’re amazing. That is all. :)

@Christalynn I swear I get the oddest looks from FI, but I have never been so glad I saved a random object from my past as I have been about my old lab goggles. I got them for $8 in eighth grade, used them for labs all through high school and college, and they are KILLER for chopping onions. I can’t believe I didn’t think of it until I saw an ad for those Onion Goggles, I was like, those are just lab goggles… hey…

Pug, I LOVE our Kitchenaid and our anodized cookware, though ours is Cuisinart, and of course our Wusthofs! I agree that a chef’s knife and a paring knife, plus a bread knife, are the only ones that you really need.

I’m wanting some ultra high quality sheets and towels but I insist on organic ones and so far the highest thread count I’ve found on organic sheets is around 350. Anyone know of anything higher?

I registered for a Tramontina dutch oven because the Le Creuset one was just out of reach expensive, but one reviews website that puts kitchen products through insane levels of testing recommended the Tramontina as the best-quality affordable alternative to Le Creuset. Still asking for some Le Creuset cookware in smaller forms though!

I love housewares, registering was and continues to be so much fun. Whenever I see something in a recipe and think, well, too bad I can’t make creme brulee (or whatever) because I don’t own custard cups and a blowtorch (or whatever) …. time to update the registry! :)

My sister was in a similar position. She ended up using myregistry.com as one of her options. She was able to register from random stuff everywhere. It’s great if you have all the basics!

We registered for our honeymoon because we felt like we have everything we need. The one thing that I never splurged on myself was a countertop mixer though. I always kidded that it was the reason I’d get married. My mom ended up giving me one for Christmas this year and I joked with FI that now we could call the wedding off!
