Staying the Night

February 11th, 2010 @ 5:23 pm by Mrs. Pudding

We will have a lot of out of town guests at our wedding. In fact, “out of town” is probably an understatement - I should say “out of country”. Approximately 50% of our guest list will be crossing the US/Canada border to attend the celebration, and another 10-15% will travel for more than an hour to join us. Because of this, arranging for hotel accommodations was a very important task, one that we knew had to be taken care of early.

It dawned on me this morning that I’ve never told you about our great accommodations find! We have informed our guests about the reserved hotels via our STDs and website, and have received overwhelmingly positive feedback! I think that I have heard at least twice as many “great choice on the hotel, guys” than “Wow! Your STDs are beautiful and amazing and must have taken so much hard work!”

On to the goods! After checking out many of your standard hotel chains in our area, including the Holiday Inn, the Comfort Inn, and the Marriott Residence Inn, we were just not impressed. Even with a group discount, the hotel rooms were expensive (averaging around $120.00), and they were mostly located about 30 minutes from our venue, right next to Highway 401.

Glamorous, right?

We were generally pretty disappointed until FMIL Pudding suggested that we go check out the Residence and Conference Centre. Initially, I wrinkled my nose at this, since I knew that “the conference center” was really just a fancy name for “the dorms at your local college”. I thought that there was no way that our guests would want to stay in run down student housing. Boy, was I in for a treat!

When we visited the grounds, the hotel turned out to be exactly what we had been looking for. It’s located just around the corner from our reception hall, and boasts beautiful facilities including a gym, pool, and outdoor fields. And the “dorms” were not like the ones that I remembered from college: they were spacious and very comfortable suites!

Each suite comes with two bedrooms with double beds, a bathroom, and a kitchenette/common area. Let’s look at a couple of pics, shall we?

I think that our guests will be more than comfortable! And the best part? These suites will cost our guests around $80.00 per night. Since they’re more than big enough to be shared by two couples, or a family with children, the total cost to our guests is about $20/person! And that’s in Canadian dollars, people! Score!

In case you’re interested in reserving something similar for your guests, there are comparable accommodations available through the Residence and Conference Center in Canadian cities like Ottawa, Toronto, Hamilton, Windsor, and many others! I bet there are similar facilities in the US as well.

Did you reserve a block of hotel rooms for your out of town guests? Did you go extravagant or thrifty?

*Unless otherwise noted, all pictures are from the Residence and Conference Center website.

Haha great find! I actually go to UOIT (but I’m in the Fac. of Ed.) and I’ve always wondered what these buildings were! I think we will definitely check into this for our Ottawa wedding!

What a great find! I hope having these great suites will add a very communal vibe to your wedding weekend, as everyone hangs out with each other in their down-time, what a great setup.

We were really lucky to find a nice Marriott Courtyard less than 4 miles from our venue that offered a rate cheaper than the local Comfort Inn, so we’re pretty happy about that. I wish they had a free shuttle though, and that is the only downside.

$80! that’s great! i thought $120 was a pretty good price. hope my guests aren’t too upset with our hotel block. it’s a lot more $$ in California, that’s for sure!

$80 is great!! Both of our hotel blocks are less than $100 a night, so I’m pretty stoked. Both are in great locations in downtown, too!

I would have been fine with paying $120 to stay in a hotel, that’s not that much!

I’m in the same boat, except on the other side of the border (Buffalo, NY). 70% of our guests will be from out of town, and the hotels range (with group discount) $120-170!! This is Buffalo — I can’t believe it’s cheaper in T.O.!

I tried to negotiate with the hotels (I showed them my address list and breakdowns) and they stated that most weddings down’t even book the 30 nights needed to get a comp room (free room for us the night of the wedding). [A three-day stay for one guest would equal 3 nights towards that total]

I even stated that I could guarantee at least 20 rooms and would put down a credit card, and they still would not budge!

@Catherine: Do you like it? I did the concurrent program at Queen’s, and when I started, UOIT didn’t even exist! I was sad that I didn’t have the option of going to to the Fac. of Ed. so close to home.

@LittlestBirds: That communal vibe is exactly what we are striving to achieve! We have a lot of young people coming, and are thinking of organizing some soccer games, etc on the fields!

@BirdofaFeather: It definitely depends on the area! $120 is not excessive, by any accounts!

@amariem25: Well, I suppose that that depends on your income. When you think that some people will have to pay for flights/travel, it begins to add up.

@Miss Splash: We’re not really in T.O., just in the “Greater Toronto Area” as it is referred to. In reality, it’s about half an hour east of Toronto. I’m sure that hotels in the heart of the city would be more expensive.

Oh! I didn’t see your profile — I just took a look at the picture and thought that it was Toronto. I spent my youth between Buffalo and my Grandparent’s 65km east of Peterborough.

So nice to see a Canadian here!

i go to queen’s and visit the gta a lot to see my aunts and uncles. its definitely way more expensive in toronto, and even more so at niagara. i find that the less “touristy” a place is the cheaper the hotels are. im a westin girl myself but i looove the marriot. those rooms and rates sounds perfect! im sure your guests will love staying there!

That’s such a great deal! So much more spacious than the typical hotel and a great price. We had such a difficult time finding nice places, we ended up with a mix of four, one we went with for price, two were in the middle, and one was extravagent. I would have loved an option like yours!

We did do a room block. Since we were getting married in lower Manhattan, it was actually easier for the guests who chose to stay at the hotel we picked since many Lower Manhattan hotels are cheaper on the weekends. The hotel you picked looks like it’s got a really great layout, and your guests can spread out. Nice!

Awesome find! We did a hotel room block at the golf course/resort where we are staying and it’s about 159 per 2 room suite and then when you get to 15 suites booked it goes down 10 bucks a night and 16 rooms take you all the way down another 10 bucks. We also did a less pricey option about 10 minutes away that was 80 bucks a night (but nothing nearly as nice as yours!!)
