An optimist at heart, my motto is to turn your "what ifs?" into "so whats!". My fiance is a radio producer and the biggest Cubs fan you'll meet - our apartment decor definitely shows it. He and I grew up next door to each other and because of it, we have the best home videos and easiest holiday dinners. We are planning an intimate wedding in the Virgin Islands and a cocktail party in June for 150 of our closest friends.

The Worst They Can Say is No!

February 11th, 2010 @ 1:44 pm by Mrs. Nachos

We originally booked our stay at the Wyndham in a Resort View room. Resort View rooms are on the bottom of the totem pole, but we were OK with that because our wedding contract allows for one free room upgrade, and it was the least expensive to book. And besides the obvious moments for a honeymoon, we’re not planning on hiding out too much in our room to begin with! So we would be going from the Resort View (I couldn’t find any pics) to the Bay View…

In the words of Mary Roach, not too shabby! The actual room looks like your basic Wyndham hotel room, but look at that view.

Then Mr. N and I were looking at pictures online of the hotel dreaming of the happy wedding and vacation we have coming up and we stumbled upon the One Bedroom Ocean View Suite. For the 360 degree virtual tour, click here.

Look at all that space! And a flat screen TV? Yes, please. With our wedding duds and 2 weeks worth of luggage, that 2 room suite would be sooooooooo nice. So I sent my wonderful, amazing, fantastic travel agent, Nancy, an email asking her what the odds would be that we might be upgraded to that for free. She said she’d be 100% happy to ask for us. Love her! But the room types go like this, from lowest to highest…

  • Resort View
  • Bay View
  • Ocean View
  • Clean Air Room
  • One Bedroom Suite

Hmmmm, I didn’t realize the suite was so high up in the pecking order. But she said that it never hurts to ask and she sent an email off to the hotel for us. I seriously can’t stress how great this woman is.

So I just got a response, and she actually apologized for getting us an Ocean View. Um, no apologies necessary! That’s a jump up from what we would have gotten without her. Apparently the hotel only has 6 suites total, so suites are not available in regards to upgrades. I would have never known that, and if I had I probably wouldn’t have bothered asking. I’m so glad I was clueless. :)

Have you had any situations where as a bride you asked for a little something extra? Did it pay off?

I’m hoping that we’ll get an upgrade for our hotel the night of the wedding (all of our guests are staying there, so we should, right?) and one on our honeymoon wouldn’t be too bad either.

through wedding planning, i’ve gotten more comfortable asking for things, but not totally. if i’m on the phone with someone asking for something extra, i usually squinch up my face bracing for the “no” response.

As a former travel agent it was definitely worth a shot to ask for the upgrade to the suite but i’m glad they were able to get you and oceanview room.

As far as getting upgraded in general it all depends on the availability at the resort/hotel. If it’s a busy time for the hotel it’s less likely to get upgraded as opposed to going out of season.

Awesome upgrade. I never would’ve thought to ask. We’re not at that point in the planning yet, but once we get there, I’m all over asking those kinds of questions now.

We are definitely going to try to get upgraded at our hotel in Italy…right now we have a “grand mountain view” room and we’re hoping for an ocean view!

i asked for things all the time when we were on our honeymoon but nothing ever paid off. apparently they don’t care in hawaii if you are on your honeymoon - so is everyone else.

Nicely done! Our resort has garden bungalows and the coveted, much-lauded overwater bungalows in which you can watch fish swim by below through the glass floor in your living room. We’re currently booked in a garden bungalow and planning to pay for an upgrade to an overwater bungalow for a few days, and crossing our fingers they’ll upgrade us for a few extra days too.

We’re going to ask for a room upgrade during our honeymoon. Why the heck not?

Very nice. The room looks very nice. We definitely got a one or two things by asking, so you are right that it never hurts.

I have to ask who your travel agent works for… is it Design Travel?

@casey: Nancy Barkley owns a company called Honeymoons and Getaways - there’s a link to her website in my previous post about her.
