Hair Stories: Just Bumpit!

Hair Stories: Just Bumpit! : wedding hair 1 1

I have a confession to make: when it comes to hair, I’m completely helpless. I don’t own a blow dryer, a curling iron, a flat iron, or any other heavy equipment. I don’t know the first thing about extensions or updos and I can’t imagine waking up any earlier than I already do in order to DO my hair.

I only have myself and my freakin’ amazing hair stylist to blame. I tell her to make it choppy and that I’m never going to blow dry it and then I sit back and enjoy a head massage while she works miracles. A little goop, oil, or salt spray and I’m on my way in the morning. I like my messy hair.

And yet. I’m totally enamored with how glamorous my mom looks in this picture that hangs in our hallway:

And then.

Last weekend we saw “An Education” and it hit me. I want big, glamorous ’60s wedding hair like my mom. And like Cary Mulligan. And I want every single outfit she wears in the film and I want to go to Paris.

Hi, I’m Miss Stripes and I LOVE the ’60s! Maybe I haven’t let you all in on that little nougat before, although I guess I hinted at it with the title of yesterday’s post.

So this hair inspiration isn’t really a big surprise to me… and yet it’s been right in front of my nose this whole time. I’ve even had this hair before. Kinda. Witness:

Hair Stories: Just Bumpit! : wedding hair 8 8

I still think I like my mom’s hair (Bumpit!) best of all! What do you think? Should I rock my messy hair on my wedding day or Bumpit a la my mom? What about you? Is your wedding hair along the lines of your everyday hair or are you going for something totally different?

The bumpit is fun & useful, but can be itchy or distracting if not done perfectly with the right amount of hair as cushion on your head and the right amount of hair covering the top of the bumpit, (I saw a girl the other day without enough hair covering the bumpit and you could SEE THROUGH her poof… not cute).

Def do a test run!!
ps I heart your blog, awesome pics :)

Your “messy hair” as you call it (I think it’s cute!) may be your trademark….but in a few years are you going to look at your wedding pictures and say “ARGH what was i THINKING?????”

Your wedding day is the one day you get to don extravagance and be a princess - you won’t get the chance to wear an extravagant gown, veil, or any other fancy stuff. And considering the look you posted is both timeless and classic (not to mention conveniently VERY “in” right now!) I say go for it!!

With the bangs, you could even do them cute, short, and sideswept a la Audrey Hepburn:

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw Sarah JEssica Parker’s transformation with a similar look!:

Honestly, I always like the look of a bride whose hair looks like the best version of her natural style…So personally, I would vote against the bumpit but I do love the 60’s and I totally get the look you’d be going for and it was would be rockin’…So I guess it’s really your call! :)

PS- I love that movie and Carey!

I love the bumpit!! It’s glamorous and playful at the same time. Plus, it will be a nice surprise for Fiancee Stripes! :)

I have so used the Bumpitz for my sweet adelines choir competitions, where they require us to have curl or volume. I have straight ass hair, so curl was not an option.

It takes a little while to figure out and get used to, but the silly ones you see on TV *do* work.

Oh, you should totally rock the big, teased up, perfectly coiffed look on your wedding day. Love that photo of your mom.

LOL! Oh Mah Gawd! Thank you for all the amazing Bumpit tips and tricks- I have to admit I was only (mostly) kidding about using the bumpit itself and really am just after the ultra coiffed look sported by my beautiful mum….but now that I’ve heard so many good things about it I might have to check it out.
@Annette: Thanks, love it!

Let me tell you, a friend brought bumpits to the getting-ready portion of my wedding day, and all of a sudden two of my BMs were rocking the bumpit (unplanned! spontaneous!) and they looked great.

i rocked ‘bumpit’-style hair on my wedding (without the bumpit. just my awesome hair stylist)! i think you should experiment and see it it works for you! i personally found my faux-’beehive’ hair a weeeeee bit too pouffy.

p/s: i don’t own a hair dryer / curling iron / hair thingamajigs either!

Oooh, I am obsessed with the style in Mad Men. Love the 60’s look. I am having difficulties figuring out what type of hair style to have for my wedding. I don’t want to look like everyday Me, but I don’t want to be stranger Me either. Something in between, a slightly more glamorous Me. I am having the same dilemma regarding to Lipstick or not, I NEVER wear lipstick in “real” life.
