Mancakes

February 12th, 2010 @ 4:33 pm by Mrs. Hamster

Yesterday night, Mr. Hammy and I were on the subject of men and baked goods. See, he hosts an occasional poker game for a small group of our b-school friends. I wanted to bake something for the upcoming game, but somehow the image of a group of men playing poker, beers on the table, cupcakes in hand, seemed a little… odd. To confirm I wasn’t off my rocker, I asked him what the deal was with men and cupcakes. Or lots of other baked goods, for that matter. I mean, the Mister will dig into a huge slice of chocolate cake, but nibbling on a dainty hazelnut macaron? Not so much. His answer was as expected:

“Cupcakes? Well. They’re kinda girly.”

What?? Okay. Maybe the pink buttercream frosting I get on the vanilla/vanilla cupcakes from my favorite bakery isn’t exactly the manliest of things, but we’re talking cupcakes here. You’ve only got so much to work with.

Not so, apparently - enter the man’s cupcake.

From the newly founded Butch Bakery, these cupcakes feature flavors such as rum & coke, maple bacon (yum - that’s totally not just for men!), and mojito, just to name a few. Design options include camo, houndstooth, plaid and other prints your man would be proud to devour.

Now, I haven’t ordered these before, so I can’t vouch for taste. However, from a purely aesthetic standpoint, I’ve got to give these guys credit. I don’t know if Mr. Hammy would dig into a pink cupcake with rainbow sprinkles (not in public, at least) - but a beer buttercream cupcake? A little more believable.

If your man is giving you some resistance about a cupcake tower, throw a few of these babies in and he might be more amenable.

Does your Mister like baked goods?

*Note: I wasn’t in any way asked to endorse these cupcakes. I haven’t even tried them! I just thought the idea of a “man’s cupcake” was pretty neat.

Heh, I would say my husband is in the minority, but my girlfriend who owns a well known bakery in Philadelphia brought cupcakes and brownies to our superbowl party, and no manly man turned them down. And there were some girly ones in there including a pretty coconut one and peaches and cream. Maybe I know the exceptions to the rule?

This is genius!! Boys hate eating cupcakes because they look so, well, girly. But I know Mr. S would love some mancakes! Great post.

My man doesn’t care if it’s a pink cupcake with pink icing–he’ll eat it because he loves cupcakes regardless. :) But that’s a really cool idea!

Do you know if the tops are made of fondant or is it like a cookie?

Would I be a huge, huge dork if I had these delivered to the hotel where my FI and his friends are staying for the bachelor party?

I offered to send my FI on his bachelor ski weekend with cookies and brownies, he scoffed at the idea and turned me down. Four days later, I mentioned it to one of the guys who went with him who then yelled at my FI for depriving them of yummy baked goods…in less girly terms.
I considered it a moral victory.

I’m intrigued by those cupcake flavors! Lucky for me, my guy doesn’t discriminate against baked goods; he even baked me a chocolate cake with pink frosting and sprinkles once. :)

This is too perfect!
I recently just offered to make some boob shaped cupcakes for my FI’s bachelor party.
I thought I was being a really cool soon-to-be-wife…he thought it was weird.
Oh well, more maple bacon boobies for me then! Lol!
