Mrs. Spaniel's Picture
Mrs. Spaniel, Los Angeles Age and Occupation: 28, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Psychologist Wedding Date: March 2010 Venue: Calamigos Ranch About Me: I'm a third-year law student trying to balance graduating with starting my career, keeping up a relationship, and, oh yeah, planning an Old World, multi-cultural, "mountain lodge" wedding for 180 guests! A South Asian Jewish girl getting ready to marry my handsome Catholic Dane, I'm hoping to blend our cultures in our wedding just a bit more gently than by providing samosas as appetizers and offering æbleskiver for dessert. (Although that would also be awesome.)
About Mrs. Spaniel

Because I’ll be wearing a new and special piece of jewelry and otherwise covering my hands with ornate designs, I think my hands will be getting a lot more attention than they are used to. I’m addressing that in part by prettying up my nails with polish, but I want to make sure that the nails themselves are healthy. For most of my life, my nails have been pretty strong and healthy (most of the time), so a simple manicure usually does the trick. But lately they’ve become really brittle and split all the time, even when I keep them really short. I don’t want fake nails (just not my thing), so I’ve been hunting for some home solutions for brittle nails, and thought I’d share the three major tips I found to treat cracking nails with the hive.

1. HYDRATE!!! No matter where I looked, the ENTIRE INTERNET told me I have to hydrate my nails if I want them not to crack. Soak your nails in tepid water, then apply moisturizers to seal the water in. Some sites recommended petroleum jelly (Vaseline), but I like to avoid petroleum products and will probably just use my coconut lotion. Re-moisturize after using detergents, washing hands, etc.

2. Massage. I read that massaging olive or vegetable oil to the nail (on top and underneath) a few times a day also helps with both increasing moisture and increasing circulation to the nail, and that this helps strengthen nails. You can also tell your partner and see if you can help foster the misinterpretation that, perhaps, a back massage will make your nails grow better. ;) It’s worth a try, no?

3. Don’t use nail polish remover. Acetone strips nails of necessary moisture, and it’s recommended to use it no more than once per week. This will be hard for me, since my hands are always in and out of a backpack and it chips my polish a lot, causing me to redo my nails often. But I’ll give it my best shot!

Do you have any tips for strong, healthy nails to share?

I was a nail biter for most of my teens and early twenties. I’d try and grow out my nails but like you mentioned they’d split even when short. I swear by Nailtiques. (formula 2 for strengthening) and 1 for maintenance. You can pick it up at Walgreens and possibly your grocery store. It’s a little pricey but it works and the bottles last forever, especially if you keep them in your fridge.

Protein-rich and sulfur-rich foods are good for strengthening nails (and hair!).

I also kind of love this stuff called Hard As Hoof.

Take prenatal vitamins! Seriously, they make your hair & nails so strong. I have no baby plans in the near future but have been taking them to get ready for the wedding :)

I’m definitely with you on the hydrate one - I use Neutrogena handcream, and it’s awesome.

Wear gloves if you’re out in the cold! You know how your skin gets super dry and itchy in the winter because of the cold and dry air? It’s affecting your nails, too.

Prenatals for SURE!!! Oh my gosh…I could never grow my nails out before!!! But you have to take them for at least 3 months to see the difference!

@Chelsea & @julesann: I don’t think I have enough time to see results from prenatal vitamins (which are pretty expensive, right?)–I’m getting married in, like four weeks. ;)

Oddly enough, my best tip is to do nothing at all! I know this may not work for most people but, I rarely wear nail polish, I’ve NEVER worn fake nails and I never bite or chew on my nails. I’ve had long and incredibly strong nails all my life and people always ask what I do to keep them that long. The answer is simple, I do nothing! lol.

@MissDoodles: Oh! Lucky! Mine used to be that way–they’d grow really well for a few months, go through a brief period where I’d cut them short because one or two would break, but then they’d be fine and grow again (and they didn’t split while they were short). But now they split all the time, no matter what length–I think stress has something to do with it, honestly. I’m BOMBARDED by stress!!!

Yes! There is a bottle of polish called Nail Life, you can get it at Sally Beauty Supply, it is a pinkish/purple color and it is amazing! It basically looks like clear polish when its on, you are supposed to apply it once a day. After doing that for a week, I just put it on once a week and it makes my nails so strong.

pre-natal vitamins are said to be the best way to help your nails.

You can get non-acetone nail polish remover! It works just as well and smells better!

Heya,
I’ve always had problems with my nails peeling until I found Nailtiques cutical cream. It comes in a tub for $15. It’s not an oil so you don’t have to wash it off right away. I put it on after I wash my hand. And my nails have grown thicker and long fast! Taking calcium and vit E also helps too.
I had recently done solar nails and the salon are amazed at how fast my nails grow out. It’s worth a try! Oh and painting my nails was the main problem for my nails splitting too…
Good Luck!

Spaniel…4 Weeks I think is a good time to start the vitamin regiment. And my prenatals (for hair and nails…no babies) cost less than $5 a pop at Wal-Mart and Duane Reade. They aren’t expensive at all.
