I love wine, cooking, curling up with a good book (nerd alert!), spoiling the furbaby, and of course, the wonderful Mr. Buttons! We are planning a lighthearted and whimsical wedding (with a good deal of DIY projects) in Clearwater, Florida, but from a distance of 800 miles away! We are looking forward to sharing our day with our family and friends, and most importantly, starting our lives together as husband and wife!

Setting Up the Gift Table

February 12th, 2010 @ 1:21 pm by Mrs. Buttons

I want to make sure that we continue the whimsy of our decor on to the gift table! The one that Carlouel sets out is a very long rectangular table… and with so many OOT guests, I am not anticipating many gifts to be delivered in person on the wedding day. However, I really don’t want the table to look empty, so I wanted to spice it up a little bit! I collected a few odds and ends, and I plan on arranging them in some way.

Here are a few of my trials thus far:

I found the “Love” sign at Jo-Ann Fabrics on sale for 40% off… $5! The blue pillar candle holder was also a Jo-Ann’s steal…

The topiary was already sitting around my parents’ house so I’m borrowing it (seriously people, go scour your houses and see if there are items you can use in decor!)… as well as the old books!

I ended up returning this particular birdcage (to be used for cards); I am going to continue looking for something a bit larger/more detailed, as I thought this one looked rather dinky, especially when it was surrounded by a bunch of other things. I also need to find some more vintage/old books. Any suggestions on where to find some?

Did you do something special/do you have something planned for your gift table?

I Found a really cute, nice sized bird cage last week at Hobby Lobby - hope this helps!

I bought that same birdcage at Micheals for 50% off. I wasn’t worried about it being small. I’m just afraid that someone might tip it over trying to put a card in and its too top heavy to leave open. So I might just use it for decor. But Joanns has some that are a little more rectangle that are white and cheap and you can spray paint them whatever colors!

Dangit! I was going to ask where you found the topiary. But Your Parent’s House isn’t exactly a store I can shop at, haha.

Cute setup though– clearly I am a fan of the topiary.

Love the bird! It’s a nice touch. I think I’m getting my cage from save on crafts.

@sunnydebs: I’m going to have to go on a hunt when I get back to FL this weekend! I’m also going to try to check out the brand new huge Goodwill that just opened up by my parents’ house!

@suzanne1880: Awesome! I wish we had Hobby Lobby…alas they aren’t in the area. :(

@Bunny2010: Awww I’m sorry! Seriously though, scour your house…I was surprised how many things I happened to find that would work for some sort of decor. I was like, “FREE! SCORE!” Best shopping ever. ;)

You can get old books from thrift stores, hospice stores, places like that. Also, ebay! I collect old books and those are the places where I’ve gotten most of mine.

So cute! My setup will probably end up similar to yours because we love birdcages and vintage books. Do you have a Half Price Books near you? They sell old books by the feet for decorators and stage designers. I also remembered that my parents have an old set of encyclopedias that they were planning to toss–so find out if any friends or family have old sets you can re-purpose!

Books: Check out local libraries. Most have discard or “free” piles somewhere near the door of old books that are too beat up or out of circulation. They might be unpopular for the reading, but any hardcover will do!

Miss Buttons, there is a Haslam’s Used Book Store in St. Pete area, I believe either off Central or 4th. It has amazing “vintage” style books that or cheap! I would check there, or the Dunedin Library they have a book store in the front, and sell some of their leather bound books. I got a few great books there recently.

@GummyBear: I think I saw the books by the yard on a website a little while back…I’ll have to look into that again I think…

@Miss Argyle: I would never have thought of it if I hadn’t visited the venue and saw that the table is huge and right in the front entryway…to leave it plain would just be an eyesore!

Miss Buttons! When you’re back in FL there’s a used bookstore in downtown Tampa right across the street from First Watch. They have a lot of really cool out of print books, and some flawless 1st editions, but they probably have some for pretty cheap that are a little more tattered than others.

Very cute. I totally scoured my parents house too! I don’t think they realize all the things I’m borrowing. Have you tried looking in out thrift stores for old books?

Used books… go to thrift stores. Seriously, they usually have them for a quarter! I just gave Mr. KM’s mom a TON of the old Reader’s Digest condensed books and I really regret that now.

Definitely check out the goodwill or garage sales. A few years ago, I bought a really cute birdhouse for home decor before I bought my house. It probably cost me less than $2. A couple of months ago, I saw the same birdcage at Hobby Lobby for over $10, but it was labeled specifically as a wedding card holder. Great steal—and who knew I had home decor that was really meant for a wedding!

Go to your local Goodwill. LOTS of old books!
