Smokey Eye DIY

February 12th, 2010 @ 4:56 pm by Mrs. Nachos

I wanted to show you how I do my smoky eyes because it is not hard at all and hey, we all love a tutorial! I don’t go over-the-top smoky, but just enough to give my eyes depth and definition…

Smokey Eye DIY : wedding makeup tutorial 11 1

My smoky eyes at their best

Now I know the following may be a lot more eye makeup than some of you typically use, so feel free to adjust accordingly to your liking. And use the colors that work best with your coloring. Also, as far as makeup goes, I know people love MAC, Smashbox, etc., but I’m all about makeup on a budget so all products I use are available at Walgreens or your local drugstore aside from one.

I tried taking pictures and it turns out it’s really difficult to hold a camera while putting on eyeliner and such, so don’t mind the weird angles and lighting that make my eyebrows look WAY darker than they really are! Seriously, they look crazy. They’re really not. I also decided to follow Miss Sewing’s line art tutorial and make my own Photoshop eye so you can see clearly. So here goes - start with a naked eye…

The first thing I do is add a little highlight with shadow just under my eyebrow using the little applicator that came with it, and I add a dot of it to the inside corner of my eye….

For everyday makeup, I use the lightest color in the Cover Girl Eye Enhancers 4-Kit Shadow “Coffee Shop”, the one all the way to the right…

You can tell which color I use the most of! When I’m going out and want more of a shimmer, I use Urban Decay’s Polyester Bride. This is the one product I mentioned that you won’t find at the drugstore; I bought mine at Ulta for $17 and the same container has lasted me 3 years so it was worth the higher price tag for me.

Next up is shadow. I use the darkest color in the Cover Girl shadow compact above with an eyeshadow brush, and apply it on my upper lid, crease, and just above the crease. I usually apply a little more in the crease so it ends up darker. It’s best to start with a little and build it up if you want more drama. I sweep the brush back and forth lightly a bunch of times to blend…

Next up is upper lid eyeliner. I’m not terribly picky about eyeliner – my only requirements are a softer pencil, dark brown or black, waterproof, and inexpensive. Right now I’m using Wet ‘n’ Wild something or other. Yeah, I am that cheap when it comes to eyeliner. Anywho, starting at the inner corner of my upper eyelid, I draw a line using shortish strokes, getting thicker as I get to the outer edge of my eye, then I smudge the whole line a little to soften it up…

I know, I know, it’s bad to pull at your eyes for fear of wrinkles, but that’s how I’ve always done it. Once my eyeliner is on and smudged, it looks something like this…

From here, I curl my lashes and apply 2 coats of mascara. I ALWAYS wipe the excess mascara off the brush before I apply. There is more than enough mascara in that little tube to last 3 months. When I apply, I touch it to the base of my lashes and wiggle the applicator brush a few times, then swipe up the rest of the lashes. The wiggle ensures that I am getting the base of all of my lashes making them look much fuller than if I just swipe up. I LOVE Maybelline Full and Soft Waterproof in Very Black - I will never use anything else.

curl in a few spots up your lashes so you don’t get a funny looking 90 degree angle

wiggle wiggle

Next up, I line the inside of my lower lid with a really soft pencil in brown. Right now I’m using Cover Girl Perfect Blend in “Black Brown”…

Next step, I apply a little shadow to my lower lid just below the eyeliner with the shadow applicator’s pointy tip and blend the shadow with the lower liner I just applied…

then blend with applicator or smudge with finger…

My final step is wipe of the mascara brush again, apply one more thin coat of mascara on the top focusing more on the outside lashes…

Then use the tip of the brush to apply to the bottom lashes. Swipe brush left and right instead of trying to go up and down…

Crazy eyes!

And there you have it, my smoky eye…

I see you!

Rockstar tutorial - I do almost every single thing in this the exact same way (down to my drugstore makeup with one pricey piece - my MAC eyeliner/eyebrow brush!)

Thanks Nachos! Love it!

Your smoky eye looks great! We actually do very similar things with our eye makeup- I use a CoverGirl shimmery shadow called “Champagne” and always brush some on under my eyebrows and near the corner of my eye.
One suggestion I have if you’re looking to spice it up a bit is to pop in an unexpected color on or just above your crease- I like to use a shimmery lime green (It sounds weird but I get tons of compliments!)

Question for you- any secret to keeping that lower liner on? Mine always smudges or comes off…

I’m the same way, I use the cheaper stuff just because I can’t bring myself to use the highend stuff. Love the tutorial and like Miss Rainbow–got to say–your blue eyes are awesome!
P.S. Ever used CoverGirl in Minx? Or is it Mink, now I forget. But really, I love that color!!

Thanks for the tutorial! I know nothing about makeup, and have no time for it with 2 kids, but I’ll keep this as a resource, when I figure out what I want to be when I grow up and get back out there without kids in tow.

@MOHmama- unlesss you’re going out on the town for a special occasion, you only need 5 minutes each day for makeup- easily doable with kids!

@Miss Burgundy: I’ve seen a lot of those simple routines, but I don’t even know where to start…all the shades and whatnot. And BTW, I hate shopping. Funny that I do have a few friends who do makeup for weddings. Thanks for the encouragement, I guess I do have to make some effort. =p Any good video tutorials for those 5-min makeup application you recommend?
