About Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

Something Old, Something Veil

February 12th, 2010 @ 11:29 am by Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

My mom got married in the late ’60s and she still has her veil and some extra lace. I was recently in Dallas and she suggested that I use it for something on my wedding day. As you all know, I’m not the craftiest of girls, so I need some ideas! But first, let me show you a picture of me in the veil:

Something Old, Something Veil : wedding veil 17 1

That’s right, it has a little hat attached, and I do mean little.

I tried it on my nieces’ heads and it didn’t fit them. They are 3 and 6; my mom must have a tiny head. Either that or the style was to wear it up high on the crown of your head. I was joking that it looked more like a christening cap than a wedding cap (what’s a wedding cap??) but my mom said it was the style back then. I’ll just have to trust her. :) I know you want to see the wedding cap up close so I’ll oblige:

Anyhoo, there are some tears in the veil and the hat isn’t really my style, but I definitely want to find a way to incorporate this into my wedding day. Here’s another picture of the lace up close:

Some of the ideas I’ve had are to cut the lace and take some of the pearls and turn it into a hair flower, but maybe add some organza or some other fabric with it. Then, I also thought about taking some of the lace and pearls and making it into a garter. I’m not planning on doing a garter toss, so I wouldn’t have to throw it to any of my guests, but I still want to take part in the tradition of wearing a garter. However, I don’t know who this magic elf is that is going to make this lace into these things, but I’m sure I can find someone, right?

Anyway, I don’t have my something old yet and I think that wearing something my mom wore on her wedding day would be so great!

So, what do you think I should use the veil/lace for?

Well, I don’t really have any great ideas concerning the veil use but can I just say that the veil with the little hat is the cutest thing ever?!?!?

what about taking some of the lace and wrapping it around the stems of your bouquet with some of the pearls attached? could look really delicate and pretty.

I love Miss Blondie’s idea of a bouquet wrap - easier than making it into a garter, too :)

That’s a tiny hat! :)

It’s funny how some wedding trends remain classic, and some are.. questionable. I didn’t want to use any of my mom’s stuff from the wedding, mainly because everything is ivory! And it’s not like she was old, or that it was her second wedding or anything. Apparently, it was just the in-thing-to-do at that time, to not wear white because everyone else was.

My mom had a little hat like that at her wedding in the late 70s (worn above the head, not flat on it). It’s so dated it’s cute, but she looked at her old wedding pictures with me and can’t stop saying what a geek she looked like. ;)

I like the idea of the bouquet wrap and the flower piece for your hair. And my mom had a hat like that as well, so I think your mom is right!

I don’t have any ideas, but that hat is adorable. It makes me giggle :-)

Wow. That is some hat! I think marcam882’s idea of using the lace for a bouquet wrap or flower piece for your hair sounds great.

My mother got married in the early 80s and her veil is similar to yours except her “hat” set on the back of her head. Her veil is made of beautiful, Belgium lace similar to the lace on your mother’s veil. We are just going to cut the “hat” off and replace is with a hair comb, so it will be more updated and similar to the veils they sell today. I know you said that you aren’t crafty, but its seems pretty easy. I know you could find someone to do it!

How deep is the cap? Maybe you could flip it over, add a handle to it and use it as your flower girl basket? Also love the bouquet wrap idea.

I think it’d be sweet to incorporate the lace into a hairpiece or fascinator! Or, have the veil repurposed into a “new” veil for you to wear.

My mother’s veil looks almost identical! My grand plan is to take the lace off of it and have it reused on the bottom of my veil. I’m currently etsy-hunting for someone to do this for me, but I have high hopes! If all else fails, I’ll put the lace around my bouquet, but I’m really excited about having it as my veil too.

I think it shouldn’t be too hard to remake this veil into one without a hat if that’s your style! so pretty.
What about using some of the lace on your bouquet, or on a ring bearers pillow?

hahah the pillbox hat is great! is there a way to detach the hat and wear just the veil in its entirety?

I like the idea of using some of the lace for a bouquet wrap or on a garter. Or ebs1123’s idea of using it at the bottom of a new veil would be neat — kind’ve like I did on my veil with someone else’s vintage lace? Or I could make you a hair flower like the one I just made for a different bride, only with your lace, if you were interested: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=40243394

No matter how you do it, I love the idea of incorporating something from your Mom’s wedding day look by making it modern. I wanted to do that with something from my MIL, but she didn’t have anything she could find. Sad face.

My parents got married in 1977. My mom’s veil has a “Juliet Cap” attached. I tried it on for fun. It was ridiculous!! It looked cute on her all those years ago, though. My father wore a burgundy velvet suit with a light pink ruffled shirt. Oy. I hope I don’t cringe when I look at my wedding pics in 30 years.
I am using the top layer of her dress as a bouquet wrap. I’m thinking about also taking the buttons to use as bouquet “pins”. I hate to rip her dress apart, but it really is ugly. She has no sentimental attachment to it either. In fact, when my sister and I were little, we had to stop her from throwing it away (after I discovered it in the back of my closet).
I love the idea of using parts and pieces to make a garter. I could make one for my sister too so she’ll have a piece of my mom if/when she gets married.

Not sure if this was already suggested, but what if you used some of the lace to wrap your bouquet stems? That’s what I’m doing with the lace from my mom’s veil/headband thing she had going on back in 1981.

I am wearing my mom’s veil and it also came with a swanky 1970s hatlet. Thankfully, the lace on the lace on the hate was damaged and discolored, so I was able to bow out gracefully. We’re reworking the tulle onto a comb, so the essence of the veil will still be there.
