About Mrs. Trail Mix

The Beat(les) Goes On

February 12th, 2010 @ 2:59 pm by Mrs. Trail Mix

“All you need is love!”

“She loves you, yeah yeah yeah! And with a love like that, you know you should be glad.”

“And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.”

Well, if you haven’t guessed by now, those are all quotes from Beatles’ songs. To put it bluntly, I. HEART. THE BEATLES. Like, know pretty much every single song, most of them by heart, and could listen to only Beatles songs for the rest of my life and be quite content.

So it made sense to ditch the traditional Canon in D for the processional, embrace the hippie-dippie vibe of our wedding and request the lead singer of our band to play a few acoustic/instrumental Beatles songs for the processional and recessional. Plus, he agreed to do it at no extra cost since they’ll have to be at the venue setting up anyways, so I managed to save a few hundred smackaroos by not hiring ceremony musicians.

While Mr Trail Mix, his parents and our bridesmaids and groomsmen walk down the aisle, The Characters will be playing an instrumental version of “Here Comes the Sun:”

I think this song is so simple, sweet and speaks to new beginnings. I almost always tear up when I hear it and since I’m sure I’ll already be crying at this point anyways, might as well go hog wild and really get my tear on.

And then for my grand entrance, I’ll be walking down the aisle to The Beatles’ “In My Life”. This is my all-time, hands-down, number one favorite song of all time. I love the lyrics; they tug at my heartstrings in a way no other song does. I’ll share the song with you all but I want to first share my favorite quote from it:

“But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life, I loved you more…”

Ah, see, I’m sitting here crying just typing that out. I don’t know what it is about this song but it gets me every time.

And finally, after all the tears have been shed, vows have been recited, rings have been exchanged, we’ve kissed and broken a glass, it’s time to walk back down the aisle as husband and wife! This requires a fun song that reflects the joy in the occasion, that everyone will know and can sing along to if they want. I haven’t actually fully decided between “All You Need is Love”…

… or “I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends”…

… or “I Want To Hold Your Hand”.

It’s a tough call; they’re all pretty awesome songs. So what do you all think? Which song should I use for our  recessional? Do you love the Beatles like I love the Beatles?

Absolutely love the Beatles! We are having an acoustic guitar player use all Beatles songs for our ceremony as well: “I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends” for the bridal party entrance; “I Will” for the bride’s entrance; and “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” for the recessional!

I vote for “All You Need is Love,” but I’m partial to that because of Love, Actually. :)

All you need is love! I’m actually doing the same thing for our wedding! The quote on our invites are from a Beatles lyric :)

The Beatles are my favorite too! We couldn’t narrow down what songs we wanted to play for the ceremony so we decided to have an all Beatles cocktail and dinner hour. Can’t wait! But I’m still having problems narrowing down my favs!

I’m SO glad that you posted this! I’ve been contemplating the Beatles for our ceremony too, and couldn’t come up with a good recessional song! You’ve got some great options there, although I love “I Want to Hold Your Hand” for that particular part. :)

@sapphirelady15:

That’s the song I walked down to at my wedding! My husband originally wanted it to be our first dance song - however I feel like it means a bit more to him in referring to me than the other way around. So I walked down to it…
I loved it and the song choice felt completely perfect for that moment! :)

LOVE the Beatles, have loved them since I was much too young to adequately appreciate who they were. And I LOVE your song selections. And yeah, I am totally sitting here in my cube getting all misty eyed and happy teary too. *happy sigh* I’ve read in your other blog posts that you are a runner too, so I think you’ll appreciate this…. I always have my ipod on “random” so I never know the order of the songs. I was in the 12th mile of my first half-marathon and “Here Comes the Sun” came on. It had been very unexpectedly hard race for me and despite all of that I was just SO HAPPY to be finishing my first half…to be among the less than 1% of the population. I was crying like a fool in the middle of the road, but then quickly had to make myself stop because running + crying is not a good combination hehe. :)

@RunMegRun: That is a great story, thank you so much for sharing! You made me choke up a little bit bc I cry when I hear running stories and I cry at the Beatles songs so a combo really got me going!

So glad to see there’s so many other “Beatles Brides” out there!!!

@Miss TM - As a NYer, have you checked out the Beatles brunch cover band at BBKings?? My mom is a Beatles nut (she was one of the teen girls screaming & crying at the airport waiting for them), so we’re taking my parents when they visit this weekend. VERY excited!!

I like the idea of using “I get by…”. It seems to better reflect the idea of getting married in front of your loved ones, and that you need your community to support your new union.

AHHH Love this!!! Woo Hoo for Beatles lovers. In My Life is one of the contenders for my walk down the aisle (it would be the only non country song at the wedding). I love, love, love the Beatles but unfortunately Mr. Gingham is not a fan. We’ve actually left our song choices up to the band to tell us which will sound best with a guitar and fiddle, I’m secretly hoping they pick In My Life for me over some of the other country choices I gave them.

I would also vote for All you need is love for the recessional :)

I’m glad there are other brides that are as obsessed with the Beatles as I am.

Does anyone know of any recorded instrumental Beatles recordings that I can download from itunes? Or even a really great cover would be appreciated
