Floral Forum

February 13th, 2010 @ 11:30 am by Mrs. Sewing

Entering into a conversation about florists and flowers with my Sewing-Mom, she wisely asked what my vision was, knowing full well I don’t know two things about flowers. That’s why I called her. After all, she used to work at a nursery.

On the topic of centerpieces -

Me: “Something short and sprawly and lush! Lots of green, with red flowers interspersed!”

Sewing-Mom: “Are we after that tropical feel?”

Me: “Yes, but not beach tropical. More like, rain forest tropical. Prehistoric. FERNS! Oh, let’s have some ferns!”

Sewing-Mom: “What kind of ferns? There’s many kinds. What kind do they have in Hawaii?”

Me: “Oh, I don’t know, we’ll just go to Home Depot once we’re there and find out. And then afterwards we cans eat them!”

Consider the conversation effectively over.

In any case, I think I really do have an obsession with ferns.

A big leafy fern (there’s only a million bajillion different species!) in a short pot is what I’m thinking.

A Maidenhair fern… so cute and delicate!

The E.T. Fern… so prehistoric!

The Lemon Button Fern… also pretty cute!

Maybe a few fiddlehead ferns thrown in would be nice?

We can also add in some red flowers.

Adorable baby red wax ginger!

Simple and effective? It’s hard to say without putting something together first. And I still don’t want to make my own, but maybe this is something easy (and cheap) for a florist to do?

Oh, and the best part about using potted plants - the Hawaii guests can take the ferns home afterwards, and eat them with their cats! (No joke - you CAN eat ferns.)

I wonder what they taste like?

Are you using a floral centerpiece? What kind of flowers/plants are you using?

Ah ha ha ha ha! Best conversation with mom EVER. Your poor mom (heck, my poor mom should be looking forward to the same kind of conversation day day). I love ferns, though. They’re so easy and yet make a huge impact!

I like ferns too, and I also want to use tropical flowers for my centerpieces. I’m thinking birds of paradise with some greenery thrown in. Or banana leaves, if I can find them.

I love fiddleheads! I had no idea they were tasty.

Tropicals are gorgeous. I love using real and sustainable plants for decor (lasting decor) and have you checked out the designer in GA who uses real plants for wedding decor? You rent the flowers and they design the setups..

we’re doing flowers on half our tables and candles on the other half. We don’t have much to spend on them, but i dont want to do them myself. ive heard from several friends that a woman at our local farmer’s market puts together beautiful arrangements and bouquets for cheap. ive been going there for 4 weeks and she hasn’t been there - but today i scored! got her number and will be calling her this week for more info. :)

I have to say the last pic looks pretty bleargh to me … I don’t care how yummy they are, it just looks like a pile of centipedes all curled up… wouldn’t go for the “eating ‘em” bit but that’s just my personal preference, YMMV.

Mmmm… fiddleheads! Sauteed in butter with some wild mushrooms… springtime in Oregon– can’t wait for the Farmer’s Market to open!!

I thought Mrs. d’Orsay’s tute here had a beautiful fiddlehead idea:

But, I really like these:

Good luck– I’m sure you’ll find tons of gorgeous ferns in Hawaii to play with!!

I am hoping we can use in-season flowers for our centerpieces, very simple. Mums, goldenrods, grasses, etc. Getting married in October in North Florida. I love the look of Fiddlehead Ferns, but had NO idea you can eat them. Funky!

The red flowers will look great with all of the greenery. And, the fiddlehead ferns will give great structure to your arrangements!

I’m going pretty clean on my centerpieces. I’m planning (will probably change 13 more times though) to just use different size candles with origami paper bands around some of them with our monogram and some petals of the same flowers we use in the bouquets

Oh my gosh. Please pretend I’m not giving away my hick roots right now, but fiddleheads are SOOO good. My dad and I used to go pick them all the time. Steamed with butter and vinegar? Love.
