Reception Venue Choice

February 13th, 2010 @ 4:30 pm by Mrs. Hot Wings

Remember how I mentioned that we have 2 venues? Well, I’ve already told you about our civil ceremony site, Ocean View Villas. Now I’m going to tell you about our reception venue. We’ll be receptioning it up at Jasmine Seafood Restaurant.

My mom insisted on having her super large guest list and traditional Chinese cuisine where you get 10 courses served family style. At some point I said OK and moved on to finding a venue. The problem is, you can’t have a large wedding reception without paying an arm and a leg.

Most venues that can fit 400+ people serve meals that cost upwards of $75-$100 per person. Are you doing the math? That’s not going to work. So we went to check out her pick of reception venues, Jasmine Seafood Restaurant. It turns out there prices are real reasonable. Honestly, you should really consider a Chinese restaurant if you’re looking for a budget friendly wedding reception. (You don’t have to include the whole gosh darn Vietnamese community like we are though.) ;) Here are some of the perksm though.

  • customize your menu to cost anywhere from $25/person to $100/person.
  • bring in your own alcohol for $20/table (That’s $2/person)
  • no extra cake cutting fees

For these prices, we simply couldn’t say no. Mama Hot Wings won, and we decided to have our reception here. After we decided on Ocean View Villas and having more of a wedding weekend, the reception became just an evening. So we felt completely comfortable going with this venue. We’re giving up a certain type feel to the room (soon I’ll tell you how we’re going to make up for this) and having large centerpieces (there are lazy susans on the table) and other things, but we simply had other higher priorities. And in the months after this decision, it continues to warm my heart to know that Mama Hot Wings is really happy about this choice. She really is my heart and means the world to me.

Have you made any major decisions to please someone else that has made you really happy?

Ha, having a wedding at all is to make my parents and Mr. KMs parents happy! I would have been very, very happy going to the courthouse- I wouldn’t have had to wait as long. However, since I’m not paying for the wedding at all and am having fun planning it, it’s worth it in the end.

I’m having a Chinese-banquet style dinner for my reception as well. I’m looking forward to seeing what you do with menu and decor and stuff :) Are you going to have centerpieces? At a lot of Chinese banquets, the centerpieces have to be small or else they’ll just go on the floor once dinner starts. =P

We definitely thought about having a Chinese banquet, since it was so inexpensive comparatively. My mom says that of her friends’ kids, many of them have recouped fully the cost of the banquet just from red envelopes alone, whereas we lost major moolah. ;-) At the end of the day, though, we couldn’t find a banquet place that could do kosher-style Chinese, so the idea was nixed. I’m looking forward to reading about yours.

Sounds like a great compromise. Your ceremony and the rest of the weekend will be beautiful and all about you and Mr. HW–the reception will be so much fun!

We did a mini banquet with only 6 tables, but that appeased my mom/grandma, and yes it was affordable, yummy, and actually FUN!

I’m really glad you posted this. My dream venue was a fabulous Art Deco style restaurant in L.A., but my mom hated it. Hated it! I was going to insist on my choice anyways, but then found another place I knew could live with and I knew would make her happy, which is a ballroom setting. Just like you, it actually makes me happier that she’s happy. It would suck to plan everything else out and have her unhappiness about the venue hanging over our heads. Now I see how happy she is and it’s made me happy too.

I also made this decision (chinese restaurant vs. swanky hotel) and it was the best wedding decision ever! i got creative and found a way to make the restaurant look like a dream venue and everyone went home happy, full and drunk (if they desired). BEST CHOICE EVER! saved so much money and sanity in the process!!
