About Mrs. Guinea Pig

Love, MOB

February 14th, 2010 @ 11:40 am by Mrs. Guinea Pig

My mom has always signed off her emails to me with ’YDM’ (Your Darling Mom), so when she started signing emails ’MOB’, I was confused and a little scared. Had she joined the mafia?! Then I realized that she only used that for wedding related emails… and duh, it meant Mother of the Bride.

Still, I couldn’t help but laugh when she first sent me an email titled “MOB Dresses”. Would that be dresses that are particularly good for drug/arms trafficking or protection rackets?

OK, back to the actual task at hand. Mom Guinea Pig has been stressing for quite some time about finding a dress to wear to the wedding (sounds familiar!), but last week she grabbed her friend DB and they set out on a mission to find the perfect outfit. I think they must have gone to 200 stores, judging from all the photos and comments I got in my inbox! I’ll narrow it down for ya and show you top contenders. :) Mom GP had only two things she was dead set on going into this: it needed to be knee length, and it had to have a jacket.

(Sexy Momma Guinea Pig!)

Mom GP felt this one was a little too ’young’ for her, and although I think she looks great in it, I can see where she’s coming from. Maybe it would be perfect if she were going to a mafia party (OK, I’ll stop with the mob now)!

(she wouldn’t have gotten it in this purple color)

Mom GP really really liked this option, but it was pricey! And I wasn’t totally sold on all the ruffles: I sort of felt like they were eating her - but I was willing to give it a shot with taking out one of the ruffles on the bottom of the skirt.

(Super cute!)

This was my fave of the first trip, but Mom GP did not want to wear anything ivory. Since this was from Nordstrom and not a bridal salon, it only came in this color option, so bye bye, cute combo. :(

(It was bright out, she was happy, I promise!)

After an excited phone call from one of the stores with Mom GP saying “I think I found the perfect dress!”, I was looking forward to getting a photo… but I’ll be honest. When it hit my inbox, all I thought was “Huh”. Mom GP and her friend DB loved the netting + ribbon look in person, but when we saw it in photos, it just looked messy. I sat on the photos the whole afternoon before calling my mom back but as soon as she answered, she sighed and said, “Before you say anything, your sister and dad don’t like it, so be honest.” Whew. After looking through the photos, Mom GP realized that even though it looked great in person, there will be a LOT of photos taken that day and she doesn’t want to look like a (hot) mess in all of them!

Sister GP took Mom GP’s love of the netting + ribbon look to heart and spent some time researching for a more refined look and found something perfect:

Love, MOB : wedding dress Moncher moncher

(from Social Occasions by Mon Cheri)

Unfortunately none of the stores around Mom GP carry this dress, so she would have to order it without seeing it in person. That was a no-go, which sadly put this dress out of the running. However, now Mom GP knew she liked this line and went to one of the stores that carried it to try out other dresses.

This time after the excited “I think I found it” phone call and subsequent picture texting, I was excited too! It’s perfect!

(The jacket will be altered to fit properly without the buckling at the shoulders)

Love, MOB : wedding dress 2010 0201 2010-0201

(A close-up of the top part of the outfit)

Hooray! This top/skirt/jacket combo hits all the things Mom GP wanted - knee length, jacket, and a super cute lace top. Plus I think Mom GP really looks fantastic in it, especially with the deep wine color that will complement the blue and yellow of the bridal party without blending in. Success!

Did you have to tell your mom you didn’t like a dress option she liked? How long did it take your MOB to find a dress? :)

Yay! I LOVE that your mom signs off with MOB- too funny! AND I’m really glad she went with the final dress- it’s lovely! Sometimes I’ll fall in love with an outfit for work and then when I see a photo of my actor in it, I’m like, huh? It was soooo cute…. Way to think about how a look photographs as well as what it looks like in person- so important on a day when soooo many pics are going to be snapped! :)

Aww your mom is cute! I definitely like the final choice the best! My mom doesn’t want to wear a dress… but she has no idea what else she would wear!

I second that your mom is very cute and could’ve easily pulled off anything. That being said- she also has very good taste I love the little red number!

Could you pls tell me where your mom tried on that first black dress. Or the designer. My mom would wear something like that.

Dang! Your mom could have totally rocked that black dress! The one she picked is even more gorgeous and she looks stunning - I love it! Also, thank goodness she didn’t go for the purple ruffle outfit - I agree completely that it looks like her clothing is eating her, and she looks WAY better in every other contender.

Love the final outfit!
My mum’s first choice of dress was totally inappropriate as MOB (think very high leg slit on front, spaghetti straps and train on skirt!) and it was a very delicate process telling her i didn’t like it, i’m glad your mom found a compromise you both liked!

What a great dress! My mom hasn’t been out shopping for her dress yet, but she doesn’t want to look too “MOB”, she wants to look a bit cute and tailored. I think think this dress is a great combo! I will have to tell her about this line.

I love that color!

We thought we found my mom’s dress, but when she got it in, it really fit funny, so back it went. Now we’re still on the hunt.

The final dress is perfect! Your mom looks great in all of them but the final one is beautiful :) My mom had tried on several without me but I had the perfect one in mind for her and when she took me to see the ones she and her friends and one of my bridesmaids had picked out, I didn’t love it…but I found one that she looked awesome in (that she got!) after putting together some of her looks…kind of like you! Yay for daughters looking out for moms :)

Your mom is so pretty! I had to convince my mom everything looked good on her. She’s so self-conscious.

Yay! Thanks everyone for all the sweet comments about my mom! She’s blushing and very happy right now, I’m sure :) Now see what cuteness I have to live up to!?
.
@Miss Stripes: I actually thought about that when buying a wedding dress too, I liked that my dress won’t be shiny in photos!
@Miss2Mrs: Ack, I wish I could tell you! She doesn’t remember :( They went to so many stores and so many lines, she didn’t check the labels of all of them. I can tell you that the store carried these lines: Jade and Jade Couture, Jovani, Tadashi, and Daymor Couture… so it’s probably one of those! Sorry I can’t be more helpful.
@NurseK: We liked a lot of stuff in the Mon Cheri line!
