Cakeee! Nom Nom Nom…

February 15th, 2010 @ 1:12 pm by Mrs. Buttons

We had our first cake tasting…nom nom nom!

Mr. Buttons absolutely loves Publix cake (for those of you who don’t have a Publix, it is a grocery store chain). And, with good reason, because it is delicious! We definitely want to consider it as an option. Thankfully, Publix offers complimentary cake tastings, so we were all over it!

When I called the bakery to place the order, however, the woman who I spoke with was clearly not used to the ordering process… or was in a hurry and didn’t feel like taking five minutes to talk to me. When I said I wanted to try some cake and filling flavors, she quickly asked me, “OK, so which ones?”

“So, could you tell me how exactly you set up the tasting samples please?”

“You just tell me what cake flavors and fillings you want to try.”

“Do I need to tell you combinations or anything?”

“Nope.”

Hmm, seems simple enough.

I named every cake flavor on the list (chocolate, marble, vanilla, and red velvet), and then the fillings that I would like to sample (cannoli crème, vanilla crème, lemon, and chocolate pudding). I also asked her if they could do a sample with the almond flavored cake that I absolutely love. I have asked for it in the past for my birthday cakes (from the same exact store), so I know that they make it. However, the bakery lady assured me that they don’t have that flavor. I was a bit peeved, but decided to just leave it be for the moment… as I could always do another tasting. So, the order was done! The woman at the bakery told me to come and pick the samples up the next day.

When I went to pick up the cake samples, I was a little confused when I looked into the box. I figured (foolishly) that they would give me slices of the cake, and the fillings on the side so that we could test them out in different combinations… or something like that. Wrong! There was a long, thin strip of each cake flavor. Each strip contained ALL of the filling flavors with buttercream frosting on top (except for the red velvet cake, which had only cream cheese frosting). Right off the bat, I wasn’t thrilled. I had asked to try lemon filling, and it was featured throughout the samples. Ummm chocolate cake with lemon filling? Ewwww. And, I also noticed that the filling that I was most looking forward to tasting, the cannoli cream… which I specifically requested that I was most interested in, wasn’t included anywhere. Single tear.

See the lemon creme in between the chocolate cake and marble cake? Yikes…

Despite the confusion, we soldiered on and sliced up the samples. Our verdict? I’ll admit, I was kind of disappointed. The red velvet cake was the hands-down favorite (it is fabulous). Other than that though, we could take it or leave it with the rest of the flavors. The chocolate pudding and vanilla crème filling were fine, but pretty bland. In the end Mr. Buttons and I agreed that we would prefer buttercream frosting in lieu of a filling.

So, what did we take away from this? Publix could be a good option for the cake. We would definitely need to taste some more flavor combinations beforehand though! Budget-wise, Publix would be a very checkbook friendly option as well, so that is another plus! We decided to keep Publix in the running, but to keep an eye out for other options that arise in the meantime.

Did you have a hard time deciding on a bakery for your cake? How many tastings did you have before solidifying your choice?

Wow…that is definitely a weird format. Glad you found something you liked though.

I didn’t even have to think about where I’d get my cake done. The only temptation I had was to do it myself, since I make the best cake I’ve ever had! We’re doing an all-vegan reception, so I definitely was planning to use a vegan bakery. And as far as vegan bakeries go, nothing on the east coast holds a candle to Vegan Treats in Allentown, PA, as far as all three cake prettiness, flavor and texture, and variety goes. I wish there were a better vegan bakery in NYC, where we’re having our wedding, because there’s only one (Babycakes NYC) and I hate it. Ah well. i’ll still have an awesome (if slightly more expensive due to transport) cake.

I just sent my fiance an email this morning that said “om nom nom, CAKE!”. So, I have totally had wedding cake on my mind today.

We are going for our second tasting to a different bakery on Monday and I am very excited. Our first trip was rather blah, they just had regular vanilla, chocolate, and carrot with snoozy regular fillings. So, I am looking forward to not so regular cake tastings.

I can’t wait to see what you choose, that red velvet looks awesome!!

I lazied out on the cake– we’re just using our caterer. I usually have heard great things about Publix cakes, so it sucks that these were a little off the mark filling-wise. I know you’ll end up with something great. AND DELICIOUS. :p

We have our cake tasting this Saturday - I’m beyond excited.

As a side note, I LOVE Publix’s key lime pie, which doesn’t really apply here, but I had to share.

I love, love, love cakes from Publix. I’ve only had their standard birthday cake and never any with a “fancier” filling, though.

Sounds like a good option Buttons. Just be careful! I use the initial contact/sample process to screen my vendors. Customer service less than par? Immediate black mark for that vendor–it just seems to me that if the customer service is not good initially (extenuating circumstances/apologies not withstanding) that it doesn’t bode well for the important day. Wishing you the best! :)

I’ve never head of Publx… but the chocolate and lemon made me scrunch my face a little… I’m glad the Red Velvet was good… but when is it not? :)

@Miss Scissors: Yeahhhh that isn’t lazy, that is awesome! Haha, if my venue would make a cake, I’d be all over it…

@Miss Argyle: Mmmmmm key lime pie…that WILL be featured somewhere amongst the desserts! I am actually having a key lime cake from a local bakery for my shower in a few weeks…I’m kind of salivating just thinking about it.

@Kat: That is definitely a good point. I wasn’t too concerned about it seeing as we used the Publix down the road from my house, but for the wedding we would end up using one of the stores closer to my venue….I was probably also a little harried with it…I’m making sure to be much more specific next time!

how crazy! we had a publix wedding cake, but we just ordered chocolate cake with buttercream and were done with it - we didn’t even get the option of tasting!

Publix has some delicious and really nice cakes. A friend of mine is ordering her wedding cake from Publix. Rather than one large cake, she is doing several smaller cakes in a variety of flavors.

YUMMY and budget friendly ~ gets my vote!!!!

Miss Buttons, I’m not sure about the pricing but you might want to check out Wrights Gourmet. I had the pleasure of trying their peanut butter chocolate cake this Christmas and it was awesome. I also know that one of their cakes has an almond flavored frosting.

Alessi’s also might have a flavor combination you’d love.

OH! Come to think of it a friend used a local baker somewhere in St. Pete/Clearwater that made the cakes only a day or two before hand. Amaretto pound cake, Bavarian cream and Raspberry preserves. I’ll try and track down the name of the baker as it was hands down the best wedding cake I’ve ever had. Sounds like it’d be right up your alley too.

yummm… we didn’t get a traditional cake tasting either, but that is super strange that they put the filling in every single cake! and how silly that they said they didn’t have the almond! I love red velvet though- we’re having a layer of it tooooo! Either way, you got some yummy (and some weird) cake:)

Publix is definitely a great option for a cake. We married in Florida and were able to order our cake over the phone from Ohio with ease. I made the final payment and confirmed all of the details in person when I arrived in Florida 4 days before the wedding - everything was great.

But when the big day came the cake did not arrive! Apparently, the bakery noted the wrong month in their work order and didn’t make our cake. Fortunately, Publix came through with a cake that was almost exactly what we ordered and delivered it before our guests had finished dinner!

Bottom line, Publix made a great cake for a great price and made it fast when we notified them of the problem (they admitted fault and also offered a gift card as an additional apology). Just make sure you triple-check the details.
